AHHH. I hate this! Someone in our office does this all the time but I haven't identified who yet. My neighbor and I get them to stop by commenting loudly, "What is that noise?" "Is someone clipping their nails?"
My boss is doing it RIGHT NOW.

    image

I'm so gonna try the "What's that noise?" thing next time he does it, and I know exactly who will play along. Might be a risky move considering my boss is the guilty party, but still. UGH.

He also likes to tap his foot on the metal sides of his desk. Very loudly. And sometimes he taps his foot loudly to the radio. I'm so bad at drowning out peripheral noises.

  • I get irrationally irritated when teachers in my school think the entire month of June is a free for all. Like "let's just play movies and have the kids do crossword puzzles"!  NO. You work 180 days out of the year and that means 6 HOURS EACH DAY DOING YOUR JOB.
  • @zobird - are you talking about zig-zigging in between cars or that they zig-zag side to side in their own lane?

If it's their own lane, they do that to maintain balance and motion in slow moving traffic, rather than needing to stop, put their feet down, take the bike out of gear, then when traffic starts moving again, they have put it back in gear etc.

Do you work at a school that goes year round with several-week-long vacations throughout? My cousin's kids in go to a school like that in Tennessee. Just wondering, since most kids are out by now for the summer.

If it's a public school...well, don't get me started on public education. Especially if you work in that field (you don't need a rant from me). I will just say...bravo for doing your job the best you can in spite of all the crap you have to put up with.

  • @jarednmegan All of the schools around here in New England get out in the middle of June. We take winter break (1.5 week off), February vacation and April Vacation (both 1 week off). We had like 5 snow days this year, too. Next year we start on August 27th and finish June 11th.

I do work in public education...it's quite the beast! Thanks for your support!

You get support from me as well. I used to teach high school and middle school in two public school districts (not at the same time, of course).  I've been there.  It can be rought at times...or all the time.

I report on education news at a community paper. Having sat through numerous school board meetings, I'm tempted to complain about the idiosyncracies of it all but then I remember who I'm really working for whenever I report on these meetings...not only the board but also the kids, staff and community (families and taxpayers). So I have at least an inkling of what you deal with on a daily basis.

The school district in my town started school Aug. 30 and finished June 10 this past school year, due to building renovations and snow days.

  • @NerdyLucy @jarednmegan  I guess we can all say that we are irrationally irritated by the mess that Public Ed can be!
  • Yep. I can agree to that.

  • Has anyone touched on "should of" yet?? I cannot tell you how insane that makes me. I forgot just how much my blood boils until I just saw someone who considers herself very highly educated and corrects other's grammar all the time actually type out should of...

Interesting - I didn't know this. How slow are we taking? The guy yesterday was moving 35 MPH (same speed as me).

I don't know if there is min or max that they would do it at; but I do know that's why they do it.

If you ride a bicycle really slowly, it's harder to keep your balance/center of gravity.  Motorcycles are the same way, but adding they are heavier so it takes more to keep it upright.

  • Ugh...thought of another one I am currently dealing with...twisted bra straps. What's worse is when I can't figure out how to untwist them. Gahhh.

  • I am very jealous of all you teachers who are on summer vacation.  We go from end of August (aug28 - sept3ish) right to the end of June.  The 28th is our last day this year.  We get 2 weeks at Christmas and 1 week in March/April.  No snow days.  We're not allowed to close ever.  Not complaining, just jealous of your schedules.  :)

  • Arkansas humidity. You step outside and you sweat without even exerting yourself. I've grown out of it, but when I was in high school, I had the worst pit stains (we had no central A/C and weren't allowed to wear shorts). It was SO humiliating.

That sounds rough...and no snow days? I hope you don't live somewhere that gets a lot of snow! Our local schools had at least a week's worth of cancelled school days this past year, due to the weather.

Haha!!  I live in the north of Canada.  We get meters of snow every year, and regularly hit -30C for a few weeks on end.  Other boards do get snow days or bus cancellations, though usually only 1-2 per year max.  Our board won't, cos they say that someone will miss the message that schools are closed and send little Johnny anyway, drop him at the school and leave, letting little Johnny stay outside in the cold for 6-8 hours.  It makes sense, but it sucks for us.  We also have the infrastructure to deal with lots of snow though.  But really, we could have 4 months of snow days.  :)

Eww. I used to clean an office on the weekends, and I swear the VP did this every. single. week. and left the clippings all over the damn floor. Didn't even aim for the trashcan. It was a super-small office too, so I can't imagine that the other four people who worked there didn't hear it and massively side-eye him.
  • I think people post WAY too much information on facebook nowadays.
It's getting annoying, I've actually cut back what I write as statuses because I think to myself "what if I saw this on my newsfeed, would I care?" If the answer is No, then I don't post it.

Nothing seems private anymore - I see pregnant belly pics and pics of people in their underwear taking mirror pics after just working out all the time.

  • I agree about putting up photos on facebook.  Thank GOD FB wasn't around when I was a kid.

That said....I am annoyed at the freak-out everyone has if the parent takes a photo of Junior running through the house sans diaper in their home album.  People are too eager to assume parents are perverts and child molesters these days.

In my day almost everyone had a STUDIO portrait of themselves of as an infant, lying naked on a bearskin that they prayed Mom and Dad would never show their friends.  My grandparents had a photo from 1944 of my mother playing naked in a backyard pool.  Today they'd be arrested the moment the Wal-Mart film developer got a glimpse of it.
Oh boy, my parents have at least one photo in the family albums of me running around the house stark naked. It used to embarrass the hell out of me.

I was confused by this at first but I think I get it now...you mean they don't want you to leave the table while they decide, right? I can see how that might irritate a waiter/waitress! Plus I wouldn't want the waitstaff standing over my table while I try to decide, it would just make me nervous. I know he/she will come back pretty quickly so it's NBD.

That is exactly what I mean. I feel so weird staring at them while they decide. Plus I will notice another table is ready for a refill and I can't get it for them. It makes me anxious!

You could just explain to them that another customer needs a refill and that you'll be right back. Or would that be considered rude?

I am sure I could, but if one of my managers saw, I would get a lecture. I usually just signal to my room parter and try grab the refill. Doesn't change how awkward it is.

  • I hate it when there's a million empty seats and a stranger sits right next to you anyway.

I also hate it when people take things off my desk at work to use them without asking.  I know it's just a pen or some tape or a pair of scissors, and I know it's technically the company's property, but I don't want your germs on it.

Clearly I have personal space and germ issues.  Don't judge :)
