decorating the outside of the church

Ok so a little white church. should you decorate the outside at all? the stairs and handrails leading to the church? the trees outside?

I have seen the outside of some churches decorated for weddings. Is that too "partyish" i have seen it done tactfully BUT i am just not sure overall how YOU would feel if you saw a church decorated.

Its beautifully simple. but i almost want to add alittle something to add to the day :)

Re: decorating the outside of the church

  • we have the little white church as well. i would say at most decorate the rails with some garland or maybe put some planters with your wedding flowers on the steps out of the way but leave it be for the most part. It will have its own little charm

  • That was exactly what i was thinking. having two shepards hooks on each side and hang to pretty plants on each side. and a very simple garland down one side or around the door!
  • Perfect! i think thats about what were going to do. yea you want it to look like a wedding not a party save that for the reception.

  • We are also getting married in a little white chapel from the 1800's on the grounds of an historic site. We are then walking to the reception site, which is on the same grounds.

My fiance and I talked about this. Our situation is perhaps a bit different, you didn't mention if you are leaving the chapel and going somewhere else. As he & I talked about it with the person who we booked with, we kept coming back to the fact that with daylight savings time, nothing with candles or lights outdoors would be apparent.

They also have "rules" because it's an historic site.

I am also thinking of garland or tulle wrapped and swagged on the handrails, with perhaps big bows or floral wreaths on the doors (because it's summer, the ushers have to make sure the doors stay closed due to the airconditioning).

I think your idea of shepherds hooks is great too, with pretty flowers. The trees outside the chapel are too far away for any impact to the whole idea of incorporating them into decorating.

Because we are staying on the grounds, there is a long white wooden fence that runs in front of the view of the chapel, that you see when you walk from the parking lot. I plan on having some tulle held on with black ribbons to tie it all together.
  • Our church is a small white New England church. We're using a wreath hook on the door, hanging ribbon with our first initials hanging from the ribbon. Then a few pots of hydrangea lining the walkway to the front door. Then moving them from the church to the reception site for the front door, with a possible line or block of them away from the front door to define the smoking area for the few smokers who will be there.
