Which silhouette would fit me best?

I need help! I don't want to go and look at dressed until I know what I'm looking for.. I am only 4'11 and i'm not sure what silhouette would look best. I know to stay away from ball gown, but I love the mermaid style and i'm not sure if that's the one I should be looking at. Can anyone help?

Can you tell us about your body type? :)
  • Honestly the best way to figure out what silhouette would look best on you is to actually try on dresses.  Even if you show us a picture of you and we tell you "oh, trumpet would be great" you may go try on trumpet dresses and hate them.

Just find pictures of dresses that you like or parts of dresses that you like.  Do you like lace?  Satin? Beading? Ruching? Straps?  No Straps?  Open back?  What type of neckline?

Then just go and try dresses on.  Most times what you think you want and will look good on you tends to be the exact opposite of what you end up loving.  Good luck!

Being petite, the most important thing is to not get a dress that wears you. Dresses that fit closer to the frame and aren't too full are likely going to be the most flattering on you. If you like mermaid style, start there. I think trumpets are more comfortable and flattering as well.

I think it is most important that you go in there with an open mind. Describe the feeling you are going for and let the consultant pick some things out for you.  A good consultant should be able to find something that you love. They dress brides in every size and shape imaginable, after all.

Have you tried on any yet? I went in thinking that I would get a trumpet style dress and ended up with a ball gown. Most of the time it is how you feel in the dress. I would say try on a lot of different styles, check out pinterest.

Well, first of all, we know your height, but not your body type (you could be petite in all manners or short and a bit stocky).  If you are unsure, I suggest going into a bridal salon and trying on all sorts of silhouettes. But, in general for shorter brides, empire waists may help lengthen your legs and as PDK said, A-line is supposed to be good for everyone.

  • I think mermaid could be tough for you without extensive alterations. The part that flairs out will hit practically at your ankles (that's obviously a bit of an exaggeration.)

But definitely try a bunch on and see what works for you.

  • Yeah, mermaid and trumpet can be hard on a petite figure because the waistlines don't hit where they should.

  • Im 5.1 and mermaid and trumpet looked great on me, A line was good too but i like the huged body look more. In a ball gown i looked like a dwarf.
