Rude Dinner Options?

Re: Rude Dinner Options?

  • I don't care for either of the options, but it's not something I would classify as "rude."

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Maybe (Definitely) I'm a weird person, but I don't dislike the TASTE of mushrooms.  I hate the TEXTURE.  I'll eat something that tastes like mushrooms all day so long as I don't actually have to bite into a big piece of mushroom. Ew.

My taste buds agree with your taste buds.

Taste of mushrooms, I'm cool with.

    Texture of mushrooms GROSS.

I'm about 72% certain that we did.
  • I 100% agree with phira. Well said, girlfriend.

Sure, it would have been nice and convenient to offer a larger variety of food, but I don't find anything wrong etiquette-wise here. They offered free food to their guests. They did what they could within their budget.

We're offering four entrees but none of them include cow-meat. You wouldn't BELIEVE how many complaints I've received that there's no steak on the menu. Also, two of my guests are on fad diets and told me they had to do it for medical reasons. I found out that they weren't honest and are doing it to lose weight. I'm pretty pissed, especially since their food is going to cost extra now and one of them made a big deal about me having a cake specially made for them. I've decided to meet their minimal "needs".

Whoa, whoa, whoa- one of your guests requested that you have an entirely different cake just for them? How bout, oh I don't know, don't eat cake? It's one thing to request a special meal, but jeez.  what a turd.
  • I agree with phira as well. While both those sound delicious to me, it's easy enough to scrape off a sauce if you don't care for it, and eggplant is a wildly common vegetarian option.
On the RSVP cards I've only seen full descriptions twice. We don't plan on doing full descriptions because the exact menu may vary slightly, meaning if we get 100% attendance steak = sirloin, and if we get a good chunk of declines steak = filet. If I describe the sirloin on my RSVP cards, I've taken away the option to upgrade meals if we get lower attendance.

Same. That's also my problem with coconut (flavor of coconut is fine, but when there's shaved coconut on stuff, I don't want it).

@zobird Lemme guess ... they're either vegan and want a vegan cake, or they're gluten-free and want a gluten-free cake ... one of my best friends from high school went gluten-free to lose weight. She claims up and down that she's really gluten intolerant, but she never actually was tested for an allergy, and her "symptoms" actually come and go when her thyroid meds need readjusting. I'm not going to shame her or refuse to have the caterers make a special meal for her, but oh my god, if she asks for a gluten-free cake, she can bake it herself.

I'm late to the party on this, but I agree that the options are inconsiderate. Both mushrooms and eggplant are things people either love or hate; there's very little in-between.

I've also NEVER seen a full description on an RSVP card; usually it's marked out chicken/beef/pork/vegetarian. You pick the meat and then you're surprised when it comes out.

I do think the aunt was terribly rude for harping on it all night.

I know we all keep saying,'it's a free meal, they should be grateful!' And maybe that's true. But it's also our job as hosts to offer a meal that would appeal to our guests.

Also, @zobird, you have my sympathies. We have a guest who identifies as 'an organic loca-vore vegan,' who wants to know the sourcing on all our food before he'll agree to eat it. Yeah, no. I'm offering a vegan option, either eat that or pack your own damn meal.

ETA: fix "loco-vote" (which my iPhone likes) to "loca-vore," which is what I meant to type.

  • Actually, my cousin is gluten intolerant and we are having a cupcake made specially for her. Same for one or my BMs who is lactose intolerant. We have no problem These guests are voluntarily on a fad diet for the sake of "cleansing".

Don't worry Stage, my story wasn't directed toward you. Just me venting about recent annoyances. Heck, I've gone to a wedding where goat cheese was piled on top of the steak and I feel like the percentage of people that detest goat cheese is comparable to the percentage who detest mushrooms. I do not like goat cheese whatsoever. But I scraped it off and did fine. We grabbed a quick burger before the dancing started. I don't let it bother me too much.
  • It's not rude to serve what the bride and groom served and aunt was out of line.

I don't like biting into mushrooms at all, but I'd be absolutely fine with the steak dish.

I've never had a sauce in the world in which the flavor of mushroom would overpower the flavor of steak.  Aren't most mushroom sauces just a wine/stock/garlic/etc. reduction with some sliced up mushrooms tossed in?   Just pick the mushrooms out of the sauce.  Or if mushrooms are chopped up really small just scrape off the sauce altogether.

The eggplant lasagna is a little tougher. I happen to love eggplant, but I know a lot of people who don't and you definitely can't scrape/pick around eggplant that's been finely chopped and interspersed with layers of noodles, cheese, and sauces in lasagna form.

In short: the B and G were not rude.  But this was not great hosting.  I would have offered a poultry dish of some kind and offered everything buffet style.
