Commitment ceremony for straight folks..

Re: Commitment ceremony for straight folks..

  • Eh...I'm pretty neutral on this.  As long as they are honest about what they are doing, and aren't planning to have a do-over at a later date...then to each his own.
  • Its not as cut and dry when you're an older couple. I am 49 and my partner is 59. I work only 27.5 hours a week and have been searching for full time work for about a year and half now. My partner was injured a few years back and receives ssi disability and food stamps. We checked. If we get married, our food stamps get cut... his disability gets cut back and he loses his medicaid. He needs further back surgery and cannot afford to.lose that right now. I haven't had medical ins or about 3 yeas now. If we get married we can't afford to.live. so let that be one reason some choose a commitment ceremony over legal marriage.
  • Here is the reason...We are divorced and do not want the government involved in our commitment9 many years ago ppl got married in church and had no government declaration of marriage...the tax code changed that!)  BUT, out of respect for our kids we want a ceremony to show them that this a serious commitment and not just two people living together.
I don't see how this is disrespectful to the Gay community...if liberal minded people are truly about everyone being treated fairly and looked at the same, then why not here...? Why not straight people having the  freedom to do this without criticism?

PS: we are not asking for gifts but donations to my favorite charity: homes for battered women. So, it's not about the party.

This is still rude.  It's not up to you what charity your guests contribute to.  They may not support your cause or want to donate at all.

And sorry, but I think you're going to get criticized for this anyway., because if you want to be together in something that resembles a marriage, then as far as this forum is concerned, you need to get married legally as well as otherwise.  We're not concerned with whether or not you personally "feel married" but whether or not you made the legal as well as social commitment to each other.

And yes, it is insulting to those who can't marry legally and have to forgo the legal benefits of marriage to make the bolded statement.  If you want to have a "serious commitment to each other," can legally get married, and want to be treated as the equivalent of a married couple, then fucking get married!
