How much time are you giving yourself to get ready?

I'm trying to figure out what time to make the hair/makup appointment for.  I alread spoke with the photographer about how much time she needs, and took into account travel time, and buffer time, so I am thinking for a 4PM ceremony to start around 11AM.   But wondering if that's too early?

  • Is it just you getting hair and makeup?? I think they say allow yourself 2 hours for hair and makeup....

If it helps, my hair and makeup people are getting to my house for 9 AM for my 7 PM wedding, but they have 9 people's hair and makeup to do.
  • Two of my other girls are getting hair done, but we are going to a Salon for it.

  • I would say 11 AM is just fine. I read somewhere to schedule it earlier than you think you need to because if it goes wrong or you have to fix it in some way, you dont want to be rushed.

Exactly, I defintely don't want to be stressed!  but also don;t want too much time sitting around waiting and getting anxious!
  • I have 5 girls including myself getting their hair done at a salon and I'm getting my makeup also. We have a 9:00 appointment and my ceremony starts at 2:30.

I'm of the opinion that no time is really too early!  I started at 7am for a 6pm ceremony.  We had hair done at the salon, some travel time to the hotel, makeup, some lunch, then first look and immediate family photos at the reception site. The only free time I had  was the hour before the ceremony when I hid out in the bridal suite.  The rest of the day flew by!

Budget more than you think you will need.  You will be thankful you did.

There were 6 of us for hair & makeup. We started hair at 8am, they did 2 people at a time, then makeup started at 9:30am, one girl at a time. everyone was done both by about 12pm, wedding was at 2:30pm, photographer started at 1pm.
  • I started getting ready at 9:30 am for a 5:30 pm wedding (I had to be ready by 3 for first look).  You definitely want to leave some extra time in your schedule for services running over/late, travel time/traffic, and time to eat.  We did hair at the salon 9:30-11, had 90 minutes to grab lunch and drive to the hotel, then started makeup at 12:30.  MOH and I were done around 2 to head to the venue to finish dressing, moms stayed until about 3:30 to finish their makeup (family photos didn't start until 4).
  • You are fine.

  • thanks everyone!  I have hair/makeup booked starting at 11 and the salon said i'd be out of there by 1-130 latest.  That should give me plenty of time and no stress!
  • I an doing my hair at 9. I have 3 bm also. My ceremony will be at 3.

  • I have quick question cuz im trying to do my timeline and hair appointment is making it difficult..the person doing my hair I have to go to them which is fine by me but its about 30-45mins away from ceremony site which is where the rest of the getting ready is going to happen. Idk when to start my day im worried if I get hair done to early itll look bad by the time ceremony comes around at 4pm. What do you guys think? and when should my day start?

I wasn't sure either, but i spoke with the salon to confirm how long they expect to need.  They asked me what time the ceremony is and how far I had to drive, etc, and where very helpful with planning.  I also spoke with the photographer to confirm how much time they will need before the ceremony.  With that, i added in travel time, and time to eat lunch and get dressed - plus an little buffer.  I'm going to start at 11 for a 4PM ceremony.  My salon expects me to be out of there by 1-130.

I think it is better to have extra time then not enough!  I wouldnt' worry so much about  your hair not holding up - i think they will make sure it does!

  • I understand what you're saying, you definitely want to leave a lot of time. But the I've been on the other side of it. As a bridesmaid last year, the bride had everybody get a really early start  and barely fed us all day, all of the bridesmaids ended up being exhausted and starving. The bride wanted to go to a bar after the wedding reception finished and none of the bridesmaids went because everyone was too tired. Keep in mind, you want people to enjoy the party and to celebrate with you.
  • My hair is at 10:30 and I dont have anything else going on until 1 so since its just me, i should be good to go.

Im not makign my bridemaids start at the same time as me.  While I offered to make appointmetns for them where I am going, and 2 wanted to go with me, they are able to start when they want to get ready.  One is getting her hair done seperately.  I've invited them all to my house to get ready whenever they want and will have lunch and snacks for everyone!
  • You are fine, gives you plenty of time to be ready & still have time to sit down & eat something before you need to get dressed
  • My ceremony is at 3 or 3:30 (still working on that) I definitely am factoring in time to eat (because I will forget.) I'm telling my girls to meet at the reception site at 1:00 to get ready, relax, and plan to leave the reception site around 2/2:30. I can't have much down time because I'll freak out lol. Just the way I am.I haven't scheduled my hair appointment yet but I'm thinking it'll be around 10:30.
  • As long as you have a "practice" run with your hairdresser you can adjust your time as needed according to how long the practice run takes.  That is what I am planning to do.  I have all morning set aside to get "ready" as I do NOT want to be rushed.  I am a photographer by trade, so I know how frazzled rushed brides are. Be sure to leave yourself plenty of breathing room. :)

Thank you for posting this! This is right in line for my time line.  I really just wanted confirmation with what I thought was a good time line.  :)
  • The websites say to consider getting make up professionally done, but I'm don't know if that is for me. I had it semi done once at a marykay at home thing. You know like tupperware parties. and she did half my face to for the before and after effect and I wanted to cry. You can't simple cover up freckles its unnatural.
What should I do? I want to more then my everyday makeup, but feel awkward when I step out of my comfort zone.
  • Something I didn't see on here.... Given it can cost more, and availability of your stylist comes into play, but there's also the option of having your stylists come to you!! Having them onsite eliminates travel time and all the issues that can crop up in between your appointment and your ceremony- ensuring that you look absolutely perfect!! For me it's a no-brainer, as my stylist is like family to me, but the benefits are huge!! You can also offset the cost by having them do your bridesmaids (paid either by you or them) and family members who will be onsite with you the day of. That way you're not paying for the entirety of how much it costs to take them away from a busy day of work. Hope that helps!! Good luck for your big day!!!

P.S. Don't forget to eat!!!! It's mentioned above, but worth the repetition as it's probably one of the most over-looked things to do on your wedding day. But one that can have the most impact on how you feel and your ability to enjoy the day.
  • My wedding start time is 1pm...what time do you think I should start getting my hair and makeup done? I am not sure if my girls are getting their hair done at the same location yet.

I'd suggest asking your photographer how much time they will need before the ceremony, and asking the salon how much time they need.  Add in travel time and some time to get dressed/ready.  That's what I did and decided on 11 AM for a 4PM ceremony.

Um, yeah that is not the same thing as going to an actual professional make-up artist. I would suggest getting some recommendations from your local board and some of your family and friends, make a trial appointment and see how you like it.

  • I'm not trying to dump on Mary Kay, they have a lot of nice products, however I am not a fan of their base/cover-up. When I had a Mary Kay party I also felt like the makeup covered too much and looked very flat. If you would like to get it done professionally I would certainly look around at other salons and see what they have to offer. I don't think there is any problem with doing your own makeup. If you are uncomfortable with it go on Youtube or Pinterest and look around at ideas/tutorials to practice and have fun with.

  • I would suggest doing a trial run.  I did a trial run for my hair and makeup this past weekend.  We  spent slightly over 3 hours fine tuning my hair and make-up and now the stylist is aware of what I want.  On my wedding day, it should take 60-90 minutes to do my hair.

I also did the trial-run to be able to test the quality of the hairstyle and to make sure I like the way she did my make-up.  It is an added expense, but typically less than what it cost on your wedding day as they don't have to use so much product.

    Strongly recommend a trial run

  • Talk to your salon.  I just filled out my contract today for my hair and it asked for a start and end time.  I was stumped so I asked them (figuring they do this all of the time and should know best!)  They told me they suggest a 9 AM start for 7 of us to get our hair done for my 3:00 ceremony.  She said they plan to be done with the hair by noon.  This will also leave me time for my make up, pictures, a little time to get dressed, and also some time to enjoy the day without being completely rushed.
  • I am planning for a ceremony time of 615 pm. There are 7 of us total, if it is just the stylist and assistant doing hair an makeup what time should we start? I was thinking around 1230/1 so we all had time to eat beforehand.
