sorry double posted the same thing.

• My (limited) experience has been that even the people I know who identify themselves as conservative are pro gay rights and generally pro choice.  I also agree with whoever said that people who are more liberal tend to be a bit more vocal than those who are conservative (with the exception of the super conservatives).

• I am Republican in the sense that I am voting Republican in Nov. and in the next election. That being said, I am not a super conservative.
image
• So this seems to be a Utah thing.  Here conservatives are not pro choice or pro gay rights, in fact many liberals (and any who want to get elected) are not, though we do have some.  Also conservatives are more vocal here, often annoyingly.  So I'm just a crazy person.

I can't really call myself a "liberal" or a "conservative" because my views are all over the map. I think a lot of people feel the same way and so don't really identify with a party or an ideology. And I don't like discussing politics on online forums because it always seems to disintegrate into a pissing contest where the liberals defend the democrats at any cost and the conservatives defend the republicans at any cost and nothing of value is gained in the end.

• No it's not only Utah. Mississippi is very VOCAL conservative.
image
• I would say I'm pretty super conservative. But no, I'm not vocal about it because like I said, I don't like debating.
• Oh I know its not only Utah.  It just is also Utah.
image
• To clarify, by "super conservative" I meant the kind of people that picket funerals with offensive signs.  I do know some outspoken normal conservatives, but they seem to be the minority in the places I've lived, anyway.  And I'm pretty liberal, but also fairly quiet about it, so it's definitely not a hard and fast rule.

It is definately a Utah thing.  I was raised in Utah and am living here again, but I attended college in Denver and Los Angeles and have lived in various other places, and Utah is definately the most conservative place I have been.

I am very liberal but found that even some conservatives in other states tend to have some similiar views as I do, but not in Utah.  I feel like even most Democrats elected in Utah tend to even be more conservative than some Republicans in other states.

• I find that many conservatives who don't picket funerals are not at all quiet.  But again that could be a location specific thing.
image
• I think at this point most neo-cons have offically joined the Tea Party.
image

If I wanted to hear the pitter-patter of little feet, I'd put shoes on the cat. image

• That is true, my dad was always a Republican, then when he moved here he had to switch.

Off topic, but whenever I see stories about those people I want to drive to their home and set them on fire.  Seriously.  And I'm all for free speech, so I know that makes me a big crate of hippos, but I honestly think there should be a law that any kind of demonstration consisting of two or more people should be illegal during a funeral.

I think so, that's probably where my admittedly limited experience comes in.  I've lived in a lot of places, and many had a lot of conservatives, but they were never the majority so maybe that's why they didn't speak up as much.

I know - free speech is one thing, but at a FUNERAL?! Come on.  I always start yelling at my TV when that's on the news.  There was a special on 20/20 about a little boy being raised by someone in that church (I can't remember what it's called) and it was really sad.  And scary.
In Response to Re: Political makeup of the board : This times a million.  I honestly don't think "conservative" and "liberal" are really logical titles for people anymore.  Most people I know will say they're conservative, but when you ask about specific laws or ideas or mindsets they tend to lean far more towards the middle than they think they do.
Posted by NuggetBrain
I completely agree! And I've noticed the same things, too... that they themselves aren't even sure what conservative and liberal even means.

• Nugget, you are the most close minded liberal I have ever laid my eyes on and you go for insults when you realize people don't agree with your political.

No, I am not a part of the tea party but I do know some posters on this board who are.  I have to drive to school four hours a day. I have a chem class and an accounting class that meets everyday. I had 10 classes last semester. I don't have time to go to tea party meetings. I do support some of their ideas. To sit there and proclaim that everyone who is part of the tea party movement is a neo conservative is an asshole comment and you know it.

Yeah, my aunt lives in Utah. I've only lived in NY and CA. There are Republicans in those states - lots of them - but they tend to be the more moderate kind. Many are also pro-choice.

FWIW, I LOVE political debates. I've never been a registered member of any political party as I disagree with much of what the Democrats and Republicans espouse. I'm much further to the left on most issues than any mainstream political party. Most issues, but not all.

Hold up - I ask you a question and get this big ass rant in return?  Seriously?  I'm not a liberal.  I'm a moderate.  I'm fiscally conservative and socially liberal.  I don't identify specifically with one party or the other.  I've voted Democrat and Republican, as well as Independent.

Also I did NOT say everybody in the tea party was a neo-con.  I said I think most neo-cons have joined that particular movement.  Last time I checked, the Tea Party was way bigger than the neo-cons out there.  But I think they consider the Republican party too liberal at this point, and the Tea Party is much more conservative than the Republicans, hence why I wouldn't be surprised at a bigger amount of neo-cons in the tea party movement.  I think you freaking the f*ck out over a simple comment you could have just not agreed with is bizarre.  If I'm such a "close minded liberal" explain to me how my husband is a die-hard Republican, along with his entire family, and we don't seem to have any political issues?

• For some reason I thought Utah was liberal? Is Utah conservative b/c of the large Mormon population?
image
• Yes, Utah is very conservative (though Salt Lake is getting less so).  It is in fact the only state that Clinton came in 3rd in.

•  I am not freaking out over anything lol.
