Re: Sister wives?

  • honetly, LOVE this show!!! havent watched the new episode yet(DVR).
  • I just watched it. I like this show too but I am so sad for them. I dont see the issue as long as the family is in good condition and the children are well taken care of, its not like he is marrying 13yr olds!

  • I just finished it too!

I think it's sad that they have to live in fear of the people who are supposed to be protecting them.

I can understand them wanting to enforce their laws, but I don't think they should be making an example of the family just because they are on TV...

  • i like this show..i find it interesting. i think robyn cries way too much, i think they've raised their kids well (as far as tv can show), but i think the lifestyle is kind of bizarre.

i'm watching the new episode in 20 mins when it comes on again because i missed it earlier.

  • I agree, I think Robin needs thicker skin or something. I like them all, they seem well grounded. I don't agree with their lifestyle but I admire them for having the courage to go on TV to try and educate about their lifestyle. I think polygamy has a really negative stigma and this changed my opinion somewhat.

  • Yes. I think she cries too much too.
I wonder if she's always cried that much...

  • When she said this - "This is not the America I learned about in school." - I just felt kinda like, "o rly?!"

Not sure why her comment struck me, but in a way it did. Apparently her school focused more on teaching polygamy and all of it's related loopholes regarding America's legal system

  • I think she was talking more about the "accepting people of different walks of life".

  • Polygamy isn't a religion.

Mainstream Mormons don't practice polygamy anymore. You can have religion all you want, but it can't break the law.
    image
  • well i'm not sure, but that's what they kept saying throughout the show

  • Polygamy used to be practiced by the mormon church. But there was a split (i believe), the main portion The Latter day saints don't practice polygamy anymore.

You can't just break the law because it's your religion, IMO.

I agree, and I don't like when people feel they should be excluded from certain laws due religious practices. I was just stating that in the show they say that they want freedom of religion.

<div><span style="font-family:Arial;font-size:12px;" class="Apple-style-span">Well, to an extent. People can get exceptions for laws based on religious beliefs. Like the Amish don't have to use "mandatory"  orange caution signs on their buggies because they deem the color offensive to God, but all other slow moving vehicles do. That's the only example I can think of right now, but I am sure there are others. =D</span></div>

  • They're Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints.  The LDS don't practice polygamy anymore but their group does.
I don't agree with their lifestyle but I do appreciate what they're trying to do.  They're trying to educate people and show us that not all polygamists marry 12 year olds and force them into marriages with much older men.
As far as I can tell the kids are well rounded and well taken care of and they are all responsible people and positively contributing to society.  I don't see what the problem is.  I understand the laws but they would have never been investigated if they hadn't spoken out.

I hope Vegas works out for them.

<div>Yes, you are correct. This happened in like 1904. </div><div>
</div><div>Fun fact of the day: Polygamy is very broad, but certainly not incorrect.  Polygyny means more than one woman is married to one man. Polyandry is when more than one man is married to one woman. The latter is/was only practiced in like 4 civilizations. Craziness. </div>

  • Greeneke, from what I understand, you're right... he's legally married to his first wife. However, he had committment ceremonies with the others (like I said, this from what I understand). Either way, I find the show to be fascinating.

Right.  He isn't legally married to all of them.  Just his first wife.  So he isn't defrauding taxpayers, or decieving any of his "wives" or thier families.

  • In Utah I believe it's illegal to live with multiple women that you aren't legally married to (or something like that). I'm assuming this is to fight polygamy. They moved to Las Vegas because there aren't such laws there.

I do feel bad for them in a way. They spoke out to try to raise awareness about their lifestyle, but in doing so they pretty much forced the prosecutors hand in investigating them. If they wouldn't have done the tv show, they'd probably still be living in Utah.
  • I watched the first season, but I am over it this season.  For some reason, I've lost interest.

  • REALLY late to this - butas a interesting tidbit -  Utah had to abolish polygamy to become a state.

  • OK, watching now...

Did anyone else feel like their DRAMATIC exit was....too dramatic?

I remember the family was in the news before the season started because of their move but I feel like I still don't have  a clear grasp on what the stakes are...

Like, Robyn freaking out about having to watch a dozen children while changing tires..well, that would've been annoying on vacation to Disney or fleeing from the pogroms (which is what they seem to think they are doing).

Also, Kody...way to endanger your wives and children by putting the wrong tires on...

  • I think the exit was edited to make it more dramatic for TV.

I don't remember the exact wording of the law, but it's illegal to be "married" while you're married.
I believe all polygamists are only married to the first wife, since you can't apply for a marriage license if you're not divorced...

<div>Yes, I think so, too.  But why?  Because they're not actually ON THE RUN the way they are making it sound? </div><div>
</div><div>I didn't see any villagers with pitchforks chasing after them.</div><div>
</div><div>But I guess that's me having the benefit of hindsight since the investigation isn't going anywhere.  That doesn't mean it wasn't stressful to up and leave UT for them.</div><div>
