[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Anyone around for an Evening Thread? : You do have a cute doggie :) And realistically, your accent is pretty close to what I used to sound like before I moved to Michigan.  I've finally learned to say Minnesotan without it sounding like Minnesooooootan which I consider a huge accomplishment.

How long have you lived in MI? I didn't know that MI had that drastically different of an accent than here.

[QUOTE]Musu, so I paused the video to talk about the 'o's. I just got to Tory's bark and my dogs all went nuts. Tory is super cute!

haha aw, thats funny! Tory does that too when she hears other dogs on TV or on the computer. She gave me some mean sounding barks in that video though, haha she scared the crap out of me.

[QUOTE]Basically it's technically FI's nephew (but he'll be my nephew quite shortly).  It's the son of FI's brother and SIL.  SIL's sister is the one who constantly posts this on SIL's FB, and for some reason it bugs the shiit outta me.  I feel really strange for also being afraid she says this stuff TO him. He's only 15 months, but sheesh their minds are like sponges at that point.

I wouldn't worry about what the little one thinks. :) As a REALLY little kid, they won't really understand what they are saying. And as they get older, they'll form their own opinions anyway.

Yeah that's true. I'm probably thinking too much into it
  • When we were taking Autumn to puppy class and some early obedience classes, our trainer did a segment on the news one night.  Autumn stood there staring at the TV, cocking her head from side to side.  It was one of the funniest things I've seen.  I could see her brain trying to figure out where her voice was coming from.
  • Oh - and when I Skype with Matt she runs around to all the doors waiting for him to come in the house from wherever he is hiding.
  • I know that I definitely had no trouble figuring out which aunt or uncle I preferred more. I mean, it wasn't ever really that extreme anyway. Some I just preferred to be around slightly more. Now it is more pronounced, since one of my uncles is BSC, another is fine but awkward ever since moving back to the US, and the other is just awesome (thus my favorite, haha). I only have one aunt so that makes it easy.

I "moved" here when I was 18 for school and am 26 now.  The accent isn't all that different but the O's are what would always give me away as being not from here.  But Michiganders do have an accent it's similar to Canadian but a bit more nasal maybe?

I remember taking a class in college about linguistics and the professor mentioned something about the Michigander accent and everyone in class got upset "because we don't have accents!"  And I just chuckled to myself and thought, "Oh yes you do!"

While on the phone at work, I've had a number of people call me out for not being from Michigan and ask where I'm from.  So apparently I haven't assimilated as well as I've thought.

That is too funny about Autumn hearing her own voice. :) Tory does this too when J and I use the webcam. She always goes around the backside of the computer as if J is hiding, lol.

Cool, same here. I've noticed that the closer to the cities, the less of an accent. J is from an hour and a half from the cities, so it is super obvious in his voice, hah. I make fun of him all the time. ;)

Yeah I definitely know what you mean. My aunt is the only one that lived close -- well, my uncle did too when they were married, but he was always OOT on business. Now he lives on the east coast so whenever he comes to town, I make it a point to see him because he loves catching up and talking about life with me and J.

I just realized that I actually have two aunts. Now I feel embarassed. To be fair, my other aunt is only 4 years older than me and is still learning English. lol.

The upper peninsula of Michigan sounds a lot like Minnesota. The lower peninsula is rather varied. When you get near Detroit, everything gets pretty nasal. Their vowels drive me insane. They say "melk" instead of "milk", for example, and "hat" is "haat". I'd have to do a vlog to describe it. It's hard to type out.

I'm a mix of Polish (dad) and northern Michigan. If I talk to a Yooper (upper peninsula), my Yooper accent comes back in a hot second. Also, I say "about" and other "ou" words like a Canadian. My linguistics professor hated grading my tests because he had to allow for my jumbled-up voice. :) I can't help it that I live in an area with lots of different accents.
  • It does kind of crack me up because everyone assumes everyone from Minnesota talks like that.  I lived there for 18 years and had only met one person who really had the "Minnesotan" accent ala the mom from Bobby's World.

Although it took a lot of practice to cut Uff Da from my regular vocabulary.  Have you ever tried to explain Uff Da to someone?  It doesn't end well.

Ugh, yes! I feel like someone on here recently asked what Uff Da was. It is funny because I didn't realize people outside of MN would actually NOT know what it means. Its just something I say all the time, when lifting something heavy, or plopping on the couch after I'm tired, etc. :)

This.  Hat = "he-at" not heat like warmth but like merging he and at.  It's bizarre and very nasal.

Oh and DH just got fake-upset with me for telling him he had an accent.  Sigh.

Its like, a super Scandinavian way of saying "Ohh man" or "Whew" or "Whoa this is heavy/a lot of work/etc" I don't know how to better explain it.

I will lift a heavy box, and say "Uffda!" (pronounced like it looks ... ooof-dahh). Or someone will talk about having 3 babies at once, that would be something to which I might respond with "Uffda!"

That's interesting. I don't think we have anything comparable to that. I'm sure we have words for other situations that are regional, I just don't realize it.

  • The Yooper version of "Uff Da" is "Holy Wah". It's sort of like "duuuuude", as in:

"Holy wah! I can't believe youse just drank an entire two-fer of beer!"

God I miss living up there. :)
