Hm, I'm not sure how that would work. I don't think I'd go on Black Friday itself, because that would be nuts. I hate shopping that day. But we'll see. I'd like to get FMIL involved also somehow, because she doesn't have daughters.

I know you weren't asking me directly, but I'm all of 5 ft tall, and my dress is pretty trumpety. The thing that really makes me look good in it is that it's got a beaded band right across my hipbones, like a dropped waist. It makes my torso look much larger than it is and it makes me look like I have curves that aren't really there. Pics (terrible ones) are in my bio, but here's the dress on a model:

Jesse, I actually LOVE the way they fit-I've got curves too, and it hugs them just right. I wore a mermaid-style for prom one year, and it was by far my favorite. I'm 5'3", so I'm going to look short no matter what I'm in

The speed skating is continuing to roll along. As is usually the case, FI's been having some struggles this fall - he's been having some troubles with ill-fitting skates, and they're affecting his times. He had some PRs at the meet this past weekend, though, so that's a good step. :)

I passed my exams, thank goodness, and now I'm working on my dissertation proposal. It's not going as speedily as I would like, but I think I had something of a breakthrough today, so I'm hoping to have good things to report soon.

And yes, I know I'm being a cheater and double posting. ;)

I'm pretty close to FMIL also, and she's going to be doing my alterations, so it would probably be good for me to have her there. Hopefully I can pick out a dress pretty efficiently.

Hehe the dissertation is going to be on the sudden appearance of the common soldier as the most common figure in memorial sculpture after the Civil War. So it's kind of about nationalism and civic identity and manhood and all that, and also about how the appearance of all these soldier monuments all over the place created tensions between local communities and the New York art world. I'm pretty excited about it. :)

See, I think I did it backwards.
We had a vision for the wedding. And then I found my dress and had to tell H how our vision had changed in a heartbeat. ;-) He was good about it. Since it was his second, he wanted me to have the bells and whistles, as long as it was kept on the small size. Then he told me he had 80 at his first wedding and didn't want anything that big. I had to remind him that I'm Italian. 80 isn't even on the radar for a Sunday dinner let alone a wedding!
Thankfully we got married out of the country and that made the guest list easy.

1) where/why did you come up with that idea?
2) why hasn't it been covered before?
3) can you finally answer the question as to why some horses are rearing, some have one hoof raised and some are on all fours? I've heard different explainations.

I think the reason I've thoroughly hated wedding planning is that I never really did have a clear vision of what I wanted. Mom and Dad offered to foot the bill and told me to do what I wanted, FI told me he was only concerned with music. So basically, I made all the decisions myself and just have kind of flown by the seat of my pants for most of it.

1. Coming up with the idea was sort of years in the making. I decided to become an art history grad student because I took this class in undergrad about public monuments, and I'd always been a Civil War buff, and I wanted to go to Gettysburg for spring break, so I picked a topic for the final paper that involved Gettysburg. Then I realized that Civil War monuments were really under-studied. Then I decided to go to grad school. Then I learned a whole bunch of other stuff about sculpture and I really wanted a chance to play with all my new theories. This topic lets me combine all the interests that brought me to grad school with my desire to say something new about sculpture.

2. It hasn't been covered before because sculpture is generally discussed less than painting and in more conservative ways, and also American art is a pretty young field compared to Renaissance or French or Greek or whatever. So there's a lot of room for more conversations.

3. The thing with the horse hooves is an urban legend, and sculptors never intended to communicate any sort of code with them. These monuments were all made by different artists and foundries at different times. By coincidence, until the mid-1990's it was true that at Gettysburg, all horses with four feet on the ground belonged to generals who had survived the battle unscathed, all with one hoof off the ground belonged to those who had been wounded, and the ones with two feet off belonged to generals who had been killed. This is no longer true because a statue of James Longstreet was recently erected that has two feet off the ground, but he was not killed or wounded at Gettysburg. The fact that this ever worked was only a coincidence, however.

Funny story:

When I moved to VA, i kept seeing all these signs for the Manassas Battlefield. Now I had studied the Civil War and had never heard of a battle by that name that was big enough to justify all the signage etc. Then I found out it was Bull Run to us Yankees.

There is a Generals stuffed horse in the American History Museum. What I've always wondered was who, in the height of heated 19th century battle, went "Hey, save the horse carcass"

On a similar creepy note: I just discovered that a museum in Philadelphia decapitated Meade's horse after the poor thing died and had the head taxidermied, and now it's in the museum collection. Imagine if we did that with presidents or something. "Now Washington really did a lot for this country, and here's his head!" Creepy.
