[QUOTE]no, seriously.  They use bean bag guns to knock the jumpers off if they won't come down themselves.  None of the bridges in DC are high enough to actually die from the fall anyway.

Playing devil's advocate here, but perhaps this is why people jump during rush hour (and not for the attention)? I was thinking that they might want to ensure their passing by getting hit by a car, etc. if they are going to go to the trouble of jumping.

  • God, that is sad and I'd be VERY traumatized if I were the one to hit the jumper.

  • Im not 100% on this but dont some people who attempt suicide do it in such a way that people can try to stop them or help them before they die, because they just want help.
  • Ricks, that would traumatize me too. Unfortunately, others are not always considered during suicidal acts.

Nebb, that's true too. I don't think it can be generalized either way. There probably are some jumpers who are hoping someone will stop them, but may feel desperate nonetheless.

  • aMrs - I dunno..I am unusually patient, so the traffic wouldn't bother me. I'd be sitting there feeling sad for the person/people feeling like the only option they had left was to kill themselves by jumping off of a bridge.

  • hmm, they usually don't get up that high.  They threaten to jump from roadway level into the water.  One bridge mught be a suspension bridge, but most just have pillars shoved into the river.

Oh, definitely. It's like their last cry for help, and many are hoping that someone stops to help.

I know that the Tappan Zee Bridge has a Suicide Hotline # sign on either side of the bridge. I wonder if this is the same for all bridges? I've never seen it anywhere else.

  • Yeah, I'm late, just got home from work.

Haitian Lady's opinion isn't even just unpopular, it's downright inhumane.  They need to get off their asses and work?  Really, they're standing around because they're malnourished, dehydrated, suffering from disease and PTSD onset probably, just lost what little they actually had.  I'd be looking around at all the devastation and be completely overwhelmed and helpless feeling.  I mean, where do you even start?  Nevermind that a lot of the rubble you CAN'T move with bare hands because it's either too heavy or too dangerous.  I'd be doing exactly what they're doing, honestly.  As much as I'd like to think I'd be busting my ass to save as many people as I could, in that situation, I'm pretty sure I'd shut down after 12 hours, 24 maximum.

I wonder if she'd feel the same way if a natural disaster devastated our whole country, like Yellowstone erupting or a meteor hitting.
