I want to get the rooster hat for my mom. I get her an ugly chicken gift every year for Christmas and that would be perfect. And if my dad lived close by, I would totally get him that squid one.

  • *waves furiously at SB*

Hi everyone! I'm about to assemble bookshelves in a frenzy. DH and I are having a 10-person dinner party at our place a week from Saturday (it's for both of our birthdays and Halloween, which all happen within the space of 4 days). Our apartment is about 4/5 unpacked, but I want it to look all moved-in and mature, ha.

Aaaand the CW thing disturbs me. Significantly.
  • I think I'd rather just sit back and see how people respond.  Especially people for whom I'd formerly had some respect.

I've done news stories on that very topic - in fact SNAP has been following around one priest who used to work in my area who has tons of allegations against him.  He worked where I live for a number of years.  Last I heard he had 15 separate lawsuits filed against him - ALL from the ND/MN area.  He lives in Chicago now, I think.  Across the street from an all-boys school.  But the big story about it is that the Diocese knew he had problems - sent him to treatment and everything, and continued to let him work in parochial schools.  They knew, and did nothing.

  • Yeah, that was the end of me and the Catholic Church. My mom actually taught in the same school. She remembers my friend's dad dragging him in  and there being some very heated conversations with the principal (a nun) and the monsignor who ran the church. They never told my mom what happenned, but friend never came back. That pervy priest stayed 3 years before he was transfered out. It makes me sick. I saw the friend two years ago. He is a trainwreck.

  • Allisong, that makes me so sad. I hope your friend gets the help he needs.

I remember in college, I was all ballsy and decided to take this advanced class about Dante's Inferno. For our final paper, we had to write a 2000-line canto in terza rima (yeah, the class was crazy) about a new level of hell. I wrote my new circle of hell about people who see evil happening and do nothing to stop it. The not-so-innocent bystander thing. I still stand by it, especially in cases like that.
In Response to Re: Hello?! Anyone out there? : This is a sad situation and I do feel very bad for your friend.  I agree--there are many great priests and it frustrates me that the bad ones ruin not only the image of Catholics everywhere, but also the faith of many people.  It's just an issue that hits close to home for me (obviously :) ) and I've been in conversations where it degenerates very quickly.  I know you guys are reasonable, I'm just used to defending myself/religion in a lot of situations.  A lot of the girls on CW don't really help, either.
    Posted by NatesGirl16
Nates, it sucks because in every grouping of people there's always some part of the group that makes a bad name for the rest. I'm not particularly religious (although baptized Catholic) and I respect you and any other reasonable individual for their beliefs. I don't really have an issue with religion, just people like those on the CW thread who use religion as some sort of badge in order to justify being completely ridiculous. I never judge people for belonging to a prticular group or fitting into a certain category, I judge individuals based on their own actions.

And I'm not saying this in a defensive way, as if you targeted me, I was just throwing it out there.

I went to maybe 4 or 5.  My ex said that there were two parts to the service and some people (he said usually like his parents or older parishioners) would show up at the beginning and sit through the entire 4 hour service. Others would only show up for the readings/homily/communion part.  When FI complains that we have to sit through an hour service I remind him of this.

I found it interesting to go, though, because even though his service was in Arabic, I could easily recognize a lot of the same elements.
