A wedding without chicken?

Re: A wedding without chicken?

  • I'd do the hokey pokey or the Electric slide at a wedding. It can be hilarious to see grams out there dancing to it.

  • For my first wedding we did the chicken dance lead by a guy in a chicken costume.... and that is ALL I am saying about that....

[QUOTE]Noelle, I'm also doing a mushroom ravioli. I had it the other day and it's GOOD. That gnocchi sounds awesome too. I don't really know anyone who will eat ONLY chicken as a meat option. Even if people don't eat beef, they'll eat fish. If they don't like salmon, they'll likely have beef. And I'm guessing that your venue will accomodate special diets, like vegan or whatever, so everyone should be happy. Or at least fed. Weddings aren't restaurants. You can only do so much and have so much variety, right?

Ha- that's me. I'll eat chicken occassionally, but that's about it. I've been to plenty of wedding with only beef as an option - I've survived. I've always known beforehand, so I just either have a lot of apps, eat before I go, whatever. I wouldn't be mad at those options, go for it :)

Thanks! If it's any consolation, our apps should be killer, because that's always my favorite part of a wedding and so I'm going to spend a lot of time thinking about them. Also, our reception site lets us pay a few dollars extra PP to have one of the apps be pizza from this place on the boardwalk that has the best pizza ever, and we are going to do that. When FI heard about that, he practically started drooling.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • Someone said that salmon is smelly which I agree with. I don't think that the smell would seep out from the kitchen but when it is placed on the table if it does not include a significant amount of garlic and herbs it can reek of fish. My mom hates fish and seafood and whenever I order salmon she has to move away because it smells so fishy. It is yummy but it is one of the more smellier fish in the sea.

That being said, I think the no-chicken will be just fine. It seems that at every wedding that serves chicken that I have been too, the chicken is always dry and somewhat flavorless.

I love pizza. I am an extremely picky eater, and I by no means expect anyone to cater to my neurotic-ness at their wedding. I've never starved to death. Come to think of it, the wedding I am in in a few weeks didn't have a food option on the RSVP, so I'm guessing that's another beef one :)

  • You don't need to worry about me, because when I crash your wedding, I'll have eaten every piece of pizza during the appetizer hour.

    Muahahahaha!

But seriously, folks, I think that's a great meal selection and will please many a person.

[QUOTE]THere will be no chickens at my wedding either. And we are only having one entree: Beef! Oh, the horror!

LOL, when i read this, the first thing I thought was "I wonder if she's from texas", then i saw you were in Austin, hehe.

I am having chicken, fish and vegetarian options... but i come from a chicken-loving country, so it was a given. But it's spinach and mozzarella stuffed chicken breast, so it's a dressed up chicken!

It's not just Texas. Both of our families are carnivorous. We didn't see the need to add another entree. Our one vegetarian friend is excited about his options, so its all good. If we had more vegetarians or pescaterians in our family, we obviously would have a different menu.

  • Almost every wedding I've been to in the Pacific Northwest has had salmon as one option, and most have beef as the second. I wish we were doing salmon and beef, but instead we're doing salmon and chicken. I don't usually like chicken when it's cooked in bulk - it's almost always rubbery. So yeah, I think you'll be fine without chicken, and I'm jealous.
  • We had beef and salmon (and vegetarian/gluten free/other allergy-catered dishes) as our mains and they were super fantastically awesome (and our guests told us the same). NOM NOM NOM!

PS: I totally disagree on the issue of salmon being fish-like. I don't even really like fish, but I adore salmon because- when cooked by a good chef, at least- it's completely un-fish like and totally tasty.

I also second this. I always find wedding chicken to be rather bland and boring. Chicken is rather passe and overdone, IMO. I rarely order chicken when I eat out because it's the type of thing that I could cook myself at home.
  • It's fine. We had a vegan dish & salmon. Not that I eat fish, but I was a little worried about mass produced fish dishes, but everyone said it was great. I'd say about 70% of the guests had salmon & the hall did not smell like fish.
  • I've never had an issue with salmon being fishy. Then again, we load it with herbs, lemon, capers, tomatoes, etc.

We had roasted chicken (I had some and it was actually really moist and juicy), lamb giouvetsi, and crab cakes for our wedding. It was awesome.

  • As someone who has grown up on seafood, a word of caution:

While all foods will naturally have their own scent, if any seafood smells especially fishy I would think twice about eating it; that's usually a sign that it's not fresh and probably on it's way to going bad.

  • I'm a pescatarian and I would be so excited to see a fish option!

  • I faced this very dilema a few months ago. The chicken selections at my venue left something to be desired, but my FI and I loved the salmon in puff pastry and the prime rib. We are a month out from our wedding and the prime rib has definitely been the winner with about 70% of the guests selecting it. In the end, we just wanted to give our guest great food and couldn't do that with a chicken option. I had 2 people (one of them my boss) who didn't care for either option, so asked for vegetarian. You'll never please everyone, so best just try to give them the best you can! good luck!
