Engagement story time!

I'm in a really inquisitive and chatty mood apparently.  I noticed in my other thread lots of names I am not as familiar with, so lets share engagement stories!  With all the stressors of wedding planning it's important to remember WHY we are getting married!!

I knew FI and I were going to get engaged, especially since we went to pick out the ring together.  But I did not know how soon it would be, I did not think it would be for quite some time.  I was definitely not expecting it when we went a week later to a really nice restaurant (he was trying to cheer me up) and then after I fell asleep because I was tired and I said I'd be up again soon. He woke me up and proposed and it was the nicest thing, everything he said was so sweet and I wasn't expecting it!

So what's YOUR story?!

Re: Engagement story time!

  • For our Christmas present my fiance's family booked a Hawaii trip in February 2011. We had several activities planned as a group. FI and I both wanted to go Mountain Tubing; at an old sugar plantation you float on tubes down the old irrigation routes and caves. No one else wanted to go... so FI and I ventured off on our own.

On our way down the mountain I noticed FI fidgeting with his pocket on the swimsuit. I quickly asked what he was doing and his response was just adjusting. Weird.. but we went on our way. At the end of the trip we stopped at a watering hole for lunch. When we finished lunch FI walked down to the watering hole; assuming I would follow but I didn't. The group was gathering everything to pack up and leave. FI waved me over... annoyed I walked over. He looked out over the watering hole and asked "Isn't this pretty" my response "Yeap, very pretty but they are going to leave us." So I turned around and started booking it up the hill. FI yelled out slow down sparky... I turned around to encourage him to hurry up he pulled out the ring and put it on my finger. With the biggest grin he asked "Will you marry me" I actually never said yes, I sat there in shock... Looked up and said "You aren't screwing with me are you" (we have been dating for 5 years) He laughed and said no. We returned to the Vacation home to announce the news; and come to find out it was a surprise to everyone! He didn't tell anyone he was going to purpose while we were there! Very awesome Hawaii Trip and proposal.
  • We were in the park, he proposed, I said yes.

    BAZINGA!
  • FI has a friend with a hot air balloon.  So we take rides every once in a while in the summer.  It was July 4th weekend in 2010.  We went out for a ride and I'm always a little anxious on these rides.  I'm always fine once we are in the air, it's just the first few minutes that I get anxious.  So FI was kind of holding me trying to get me to relax.  I was enjoying the view of the lake, and the vineyards we have in our area.  FI told me to look over the opposite side and when I did I saw "Will You Marry Me?" written out in a field with hay bails.

It was so surreal.  I started crying.  I said yes and he put the ring on my finger.  It was the best hot air balloon ride I have ever been on.

  • FI and I picked out a ring together, but once it showed up he hid it. The night of my birthday he was planning on taking me on a horse-drawn carriage ride in Boston and proposing. However, I was driving the car and decided we were going to go look at cats to adopt instead. We ended up falling in love with two cats and spent too much time there playing with them, so we didn't have time to go into Boston (yes, we adopted the 2 cats!).

11 days later we went with friends to an amusement park. He brought the ring with him, in his pocket in a paper envelope. We went on a water ride that morning, then went to lunch. When he tried to pull out his money, the ring fell out because the paper had gotten wet and fallen apart! I noticed it falling. I tried to pretend I didn't, but couldn't contain myself while we ate lunch. After lunch he took me back to the water ride, stood me directly in the splash zone, waited for a splash and then asked me just before we got soaked. =)

  • The sky was blue and we went on a picnic and it was so romantic and he looked so handsome and I just fell in love with him and couldn't imagine my life without him so when he took me on a carriage ride that night and pulled out a big sparkly ring I just couldn't say no!

I said "YES! YES! YES" (Wait, was that before or after we...)

We got engaged at FI's family reunion, June 2011. His grandparents were celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary so that Saturday we went to a Catholic church service (my first!), followed by a nice reception dinner, and then dancing where I learned how to Two Step.

That day and the previous day I felt I was being tested. First, as soon as we arrived in North Dakota I was put on the back of a 4-wheeler to round up calves for branding. Second, I was surrounded by over sixty of FI's relatives, no lie. I  went around the farm with FI and his Father and watched them shoot bullets into a lake to make frogs fly into the air. I watched FI decapitate a bird to use as fish bait. "Fishing" consisted of throwing a line out and leaving the pole while we attended a bonfire where everyone was drunk and the flames were two stories high.

So naturally, that Saturday after church and the reception, I joked around about getting married. FI said "Marry Me," to which I replied "Shut up," and left it at that for a few minutes before it dawned on me that maybe he wasn't kidding. I asked if he was and he said "No!"

It was my birthday. FI always makes me a cake or cupcakes for birthdays, v-day, etc. At one point he was in the kitchen decorating them and I was on the phone with a friend. I started walking over towards the kitchen and he FREAKED OUT and said "don't come over here" And I thought to myself "what, is he writing 'Will You Marry Me' on them?" But I put the thought out of my head.

We made dinner, watched some TV and the whole time I'm thinking "what is on those cupcakes, that I couldn't see them." And I kept thinking it was a proposal but then dismissing it because he was so calm and normal, and he is an anxious basketcase about everything normally.

So he finally asked if I was ready for my cupcakes and he went and grabbed the tray, lit the candles and starting singing 'Happy Birthday' while carrying the cupcakes. When he got to "Happy Birthday Dear Daria" he ended it with "Will you marry me" and knelt down, holding the cupcakes aloft, and yes they said "will you marry me." And yes, my first thought was "I was right!" I said "are you joking" about 20 times, remembered I was supposed to say "yes" and then I blew out the candles. They he said "I plan on getting you a ring, but right now I have my grandmother's ring" and he pulled out this ring that was broken and needed to be cleaned and I just burst into tears because I realized it was actually real. I went and got it fixed and cleaned and it's perfect, I didn't need another one.

After about 7 months of dating FI and I knew we were going to get married and started talking about when we wanted that to be. I wanted to be engaged by the end of last year so we could start planning the wedding (we are both very involved in out synagogue and between bar mitzvehs, other weddings, and just normal synagogue activites we had to plan to plan from a wedding day backwards). During our whole dating time FI was out of steady work because of the economy and I thought I would never get a ring! I told him several times it didn't have to be a diamond that I loved him and just wanted to marry him. As the end of the year drew near I kept looking for a proposal around every corner, we were shooting to get married in the summer so would need to be engaged by the end of the year for that to work. I kept sending him pictures of rings and thinking again that it's not going to happen for a while yet. Chanukkah came and went and so did Christmas and nothing, nothing, nothing.
My friend and I were planning a huge New Year's Eve party and I wondered if he would propose then, I figured if he was going to propose on New Years he would pull me aside and do it quietly, also he kept talking about going to the beach on new year's day so I thought he would do it then.
Right after midnight we were giving new year's toasts and he started giving a toast, which I thought was strange since he's not a big public speaking and there were over 50 people there. But again I was seeing a proposal around every corner so I was really trying hard to not get my hopes up when he all of a sudden turns to me pops a ring out of his pocket and is down on one knee! I was in SHOCK, then I said yes, he kissed me and the neighbors set off fireworks for new years but they were timed perfectly with the kiss.
Oh and EVERYONE at the party knew he was going to do it...

FI wanted to give me an early Christmas present, because we travel to NY for Christmas.  He gave me a nice purse, which I still use today.  Inside the purse was my ring, which he pulled out and proposed with.  Cute and intimate, just the 2 of us at home.  It was a complete surprise, I thought he was waiting a few more months.

  • Aw I love this:)  It's definitely important to remember that the wedding day isn't the most important thing, the marriage is.  Remembering the engagement story always stops me before I start to nag :) because he really knew what I wanted and made it happen.

He asked me to marry him quietly in my ear in a family-favorite spot to watch the fireworks at Magic Kingdom.

  • FI and I were in the process of buying a house together, so I knew it was going to happen soon.  He also told me to let him know what type of ring I wanted because "he didn't want to screw it up", which was also a good clue that it was going to happen sometime soon.  We went to Hawaii shortly after that, and I really thought it was going to happen there (so jealous of you Kristin), but by the end of the trip, I knew he was not going to do it (since he is the type to do something right away and not wait).  This made me very crabby by the end of the trip.  When I ask him about it now, he says he was too scared to take a ring all the way to hawaii - he's very risk averse.  Anyhoo...  On our two year anniversary, we spent the day boating on the lake just the two of us.  He usually invites a lot of our friends along, but he made a big deal about it just being the two of us this time.  I really thought it was going to happen, but it did not.  We had dinner that night at a really nice restaurant in Seattle and sat in a sweetheart booth in the back of the restaurant - it was very romantic (low lights).  He was acting weird at the beginning of the meal, but we were NEVER along.  Our waiter stopped by the table, the wine guy stopped by, the salad guy came and made the salad at our table, etc.  Finally when we were alone at the table eating our salad, he stopped, put his fork down and said "I need to take care of some business".  I thought he had to go to the bathroom!  Apparently the "business" was proposing.  He then rambled a few things that I don't remember, said something about calling my dad, and then took out the ring.  Even though we were at a restaurant, it was so dark and we were in a sweetheart booth so it really felt like it was just the two of us.  I said yes right away and the server brought over some champagne.  Then, we got back to eating :)

  • The first time Daniel asked me to marry him.. well he didn't really ask me I guess.

We were 17 and 19 and he flat out said "I would love to marry you" but we knew we were too young to even really think about it. But we were discussing it, so we knew we were on the same page emotionally.

Over the course of the next 4 years, we talked about it a lot and he asked me if I would marry him someday, and I agreed but there was no ring so we didn't plan anything. We weren't in a rush because we were young and we knew where we stood with each other, regardless of not being married. Things fell into place, and we ended up having 2 children together. After our youngest was about a year old, we decided we were financially confident enough at that point to start stashing money away with the intention of puting it toward a wedding instead of other things.

For my ring, it's kind of a funny story. When we had been together for about a year, Daniel found a diamond ring laying in the road. Just laying there! We knew it was real (and posted an ad to try and find its rightful owner), but had no idea what it was worth.

When the time came to start planning the wedding (about 15 months ago), we had the diamond put into a new setting that we picked out, and to our delight (because of his great find), the diamond turned out to be a pretty awesome find.

So, no big fireworks, no big speech - but still special to me because I feel that we'd affirmed our decision of marrying each other so many times over the last 8 years, that it was amazing just making it finally true!!

  • We had just spent six months painstakingly renovating our house to make it ready to move into. It was a couple of weeks before Christmas and it was almost his birthday. I made reservations at our favorite fancy restaurant and invited his brother and girlfriend and my sister and her husband (that part was his suggestion).

We had a great dinner and he said he was so happy that I brought him to our favorite place for his birthday. The waitress brought our check and I took it because I was going to pay for his brithday dinner. When I opened it, the check said "This dinner is not about Tom's birthday". I looked up, very confused, and he was on his knee in front of me with the ring.

I screamed "Yes!" and started crying and everyone in the restaurant started clapping and the waitress popper champange! He had been planning it for weeks, knowing that I would take him there.

Most romantic moment of my life. Fast forward two days later. I was cleaning out our car and found all his abandoned scribbled proposal rough drafts. I swooned all over again.

  • Jaschelle - I was looking at your web site - what are you doing with the photos?? You've got me curious!!
  • I had ripped a photo of a ring out of a magazine and my roommate colored the 2 side diamonds in with a pink highlighter.  She posted it on our fridge (we all live together, me, her, FI and FBIL). After a few weeks the pic was gone so I got super excited.  Then a month went by so I forgot about it and just assumed he no longer wanted to stare at a picture of a ridiculously expensive ring that he couldn't afford.

Another month later I discovered that my Grammy's diamong, which I had on a necklace, was gone.  So I got super excited again.  But it wasn't until another month later that FI called me at work to tell me he broke a tooth at lunch and was able to get an emergency appt. at our dentist for that night.  He told me they needed him to have a ride home in case they gave him sleepy gas to fix it.  Which I thought was weird, because our dentist is 1/2 mile from our house, in the center of town.  The center of town has a little green area with a big gazebo and is surrounded by old gorgeous architectural buildings.  Anyways, I was a bit annoyed, but got out of a work a few minutes early.  When I pulled into a street spot, FI was already knocking at my passenger window and I was SO confused.  He held my hand and walked me to the gazebo, got down on one knee and was so amazingly sweet.  Aaannnndd it wouldn't have been a proper proposal for me (a social worker constantly helping those in need) without a homeless man watching the entire thing lol.  (there are NOT many homeless people in our town!!).

He wanted to do it on our way to my parents in NY for Christmas 2 days later at Rockefeller Center but didn't wanna screw it all up lol!

  • FI had just bought a house and we moved in together in October 2010.  We decided not to do Christmas presents since we had just spent so much money trying to make our house a home.  He had asked my parents so they knew it was coming and my mom kept telling me that our family always breaks the "no gift rule" and I should just get him something and hide it and if he doesn't get me anything then they will give him the gift I got.  Well, Christmas morning he went downstairs to feed the cat...for 20 minutes!!!! When he came upstairs he told me Santa came so he brought me my stocking.  As I was opening it I didn't know whether or not it was the replacement earrings I had been begging for (we had to return defective ones a few months earlier) or a diamond ring.  I was secretly hoping for the ring but we hadn't talked about it before so I wasn't really expecting it.  We both had plans to spend the day with our respective families so I didn't see him alllll day!  He didn't even tell his parents he was proposing.  His mom and grandma called me before I even made it to my parents' house to say congratulations.  It was the most difficult secret to keep from my extended family all day.  It was especially hard to keep from my cousin since we are so close, she's my MOH, and she had texted me about 10 mins after he proposed asking if I got a Christmas gift and I lied and told her no.

So I don't care that this is a public forum, here is the link to my wedding website where you can read our proposal story if you so choose to. Posted by jaschelle

Just want to warn you, I know you want to share every detail of your wedding with us and you don't care that this is a public forum, but you have quite a bit of personal information on your website so if anyone really wanted to, it probably wouldn't be too hard to steal your identity. Just an FYI.

  • No real story. We talked about it. The next day, we went to the store to pick out a ring. He put it on hold for a day to think things through. We went and picked it up and he put it on my finger.

Oh, but he did ask my mom if it was alright first, while I was sitting next to her.
