[QUOTE]If you go to a Mexican resaurant, it's pretty much a given that there's going to be a mariachi band, so why should you be surprised that they're there playing? If it bothers you so much, then get your food to-go. I don't complain about the polka band playing their accordians at the German biergarten restaurant I go to, because I know they play there. And about the mispronunciation, if you're going to use a Spanish word, shouldn't you at least know how it's pronounced, thus avoiding embarassment?

I still don't see how it's offensive to dislike it??

Um, not one single Mexican restaurant out of the 20+ in this town have mariachi bands.  I'm annoyed any time I go to a restaurant and someone comes over to my table to play.  I'm friggin eating, walk away.  It's rude.
Take a breather.  Can you honestly tell me you have never mispronounced a word that is not of your native language?  I think you are being a bit over sensitive.

I mean, I don't think it's anyone's place to say, "If you don't like a mariachi band, don't go to a Mexican restaurant."  That's a decision she can clearly make on her own.  And I don't think it would be bad to say, "Man, I love that German restaurant but the polka band is annoying sometimes."  Also, as a note, polka bands don't usually roam around getting people to tip them, which can be uncomfortable for some with mariachi bands.

And I'm of the mindset that I like people trying to learn new languages, even if they aren't perfect at it.  I speak fluent Spanish and often get (almost) mistaken for a native speaker, until they catch a grammatical or pronunciation mistake after a few minutes.  I don't mind when people mispronounce things as I think it's good they're learning.  To be honest, I dislike when people criticize others who are trying.  Sure, they could say it better, but I don't judge people who are learning English or trying to speak English and mispronounce something, so I don't think it's fair to English speakers who are learning another language.  So few do, so I would hardly discourage anyone from trying.

OMG... I love Daytime Lifetime so much.. I'm watching it right now actually.. It makes my heart sing.

Anndd.. I thought that the Samoa/Carmel Delight thing was regional? They've always been Carmel Delights and I never even knew they were called Samoa's until I went to the West Coast..

I hate soda..  It's all "Cocola" to me, but I don't like any of it.. except for the occasional Cheerwine (and Cheerwine Float Yummm-O!!)

ETA:  None of the Mexican restaurants in my home town have live mariachi bands either... that's not a thing here I guess, but I also don't like to be bothered for tips while I'm eating nor do I like loud music (ever really... it stresses me out..).  Meg, for the most part I think we're all about calling people out when they are being offensive, but in this case, I think you're being a little bit over-sensitive..

God I loved Days of Our Lives when I was about 10 til 18. Every sick day and every summer. I remember when I was 12 my best friend and I would make grilled cheese sandwiches, hang out at her house and watch Days, that was the summer that Marlena was possessed by the evil demon that turned out to be Stefano. Then we would rollerblade.

Also, did anyone ever watch Passions? That was the most ridiculous soap opera ever. From the get go- with the talking doll/little boy, the witch, the ovbious Princess Di character. Oh, memories.

My parents used to mail it to me when I was stationed on the "Left Coast" and once one got a hole in it and like the entire post office shut down because it was a leaky package and everyone thought it was a bomb or some stupid shiit. So ridiculous and I had to open this package with MA's surrounding me.  Ridiculous.  I even said to them "It's just Cheerwine Y'all!" Wink

  • Oh God, why is my head so full of useless information: Kristen was faking the pregnancy to keep John who was still in love with Marlena and she wore that ridiculous fake pregnancy pad and he wanted to take a bath with her and she had to figure out how to make it work. And Lexie and Abe and Brandon being the real baby-daddy and the whooooole Carrie/Austin/Sami/Lucas business. Whenever I see The Biggest Loser I always think of that (Sami's still the host of that, right?).

And what I loved about them then, but really is the reason I can't watch them now, is that I could watch one on the Monday of a 3 day weekend, and then be out sick or home early about a month later and it was like they were playing the exact same scene. But it was awesome when I had mono senior year, that's when I think I realized how monotonous they are and had to quit after 3 weeks straight.

Edit: I don't know what happened.  HAAA

I dislike All Calls that last over an hour while I'm standing on a cement floor and my back hurts.
I dislike smokers - not all smokers, but the ones in my flight who take 20-30 minutes smoke breaks and then sit at work for 45 minutes before claiming they need another one while nonsmokers get to pick up the slack and never get a break!
I dislike deployment rumors and a supervision that waits until a month out to confirm anything
I dislike snotty b!tches and stuck-up people who judge others based on rumors
I dislike being in a grumpy mood
... K, that's it for now, cause I am in a grumpy mood and can go on and on...

So, on another note - LOVE Cheerwine, and yes, some GS cookies have different names based on what region you live in because they have different manufacturers and some of the names were copyright or patent protected or whatever.

  • I also dislike a meeting my boss is forcing me to go to at 3. It's a "strategic planning meeting" for the future of the paper. You could volunteer to go but they want you to be vocal. I don't want to go but she called me and was like I have you down for being able to go to the meeting can you? Ugh! And I'm gonna be late because my class goes til 3 and I'm a bum because I didn't have to do anything in the office today. Mer
  • Allow me to rephrase.

I dislike whenever persons of any nationality stand next to my table whilst I eat and sing loudly for tips.  I go to see live music quite frequently, at which I often eat, but those performers are on a stage.  I don't enjoy the table right next to the stage, either.

That's great that your husband's family are musicians, but that experience is quite unenjoyable for me.

As for the whole "horchata" thing...try pluralizing pierogi.  Go on.
