How much $$$ did you spend?

Hi ladies,

Fiancé isn't thrilled with the amount I'm spending on my dress. Of course I'm paying for it, and I think I got a bargain! Curious, what did you spend/ plan to spend?

Re: How much $$$ did you spend?

  • What I spent / Planned to spend:
    $800 / $500.

We went over budget by a little, but my mom agrees, and so do I, that it is totally worth the extra $300.

  • My goal was to stick around $500 (there was definitely wiggle room, but the idea of spending any more than that on a dress that I'll get to wear for like 8 hours kind of makes me sick, lol).

I ended up falling in love with a dress that was $550, so with tax it ended up being about $600.  I'm happy with it though, so an extra $100 was NBD

  • My mom bought everything for me and my budget for a dress was $2,000. (Even though I knew spending more than $1,000 was too much for me.) I got my dress, veil, and bra for under $1,000. I splurged on my shoes, though. Everything together was still under my budget. :)

  • Spent $500... no plan or budget. I was hoping to stay under $1k but I was willing to pay what it took to get a dress that I loved.
  • Since my father paid for my dress I didn't want to spend a lot, he estimated ~$1000 and I spent ~$549+tax (+~$200 in alterations).

    So:

    Actual/Estimated
    $749/$1000

  • Well... mine will be in pounds... but... 500/895.

I wanted to spend 500... mum told the consultant 1000... I hated the idea... but the consultant went with mum's price because mum was paying... but... really liking dresses at 700 and 800 were making me feel ill.

Eventually I found a dress that I liked, didn't hate myself in, and could live with the price (though that in itself is still tough now).
  • Honestly, it depends on how you look at the dress.  If you're one of those brides who have to find THE dress, and think it's the most important part of the day, then yeah you'll probably spend more.  If you're like me though, and that dress is just another aspect of the day, then you're likely not going to spend as much.  I bought the 2nd dress I tried on because I loved it, it was super comfortable, and it was $500.

  • My dress was $800 and my alterations were $200 so $1,000 all together. Unless you want to add in the cost of my veil, bra and slip then it was $1,340

  • I spent $1,100. A little over my budget but it was worth it.

  • Budgeted for $800. Told the consultants $500 (so they didn't bring dresses at the top of my budget).

Dress cost $550 ($600 with tax).
  • I spent 1800$ with a 20% off sale.  I had budgeted for 2500$ so I was ecstatic.

  • all together over 2,000.
  • Dress: $99
    Bolero: $30
    Crinoline: $95
    Shoes: $119
    Veil: $16
    Button bouquet: $40
Total for everything so far: $399  (need to shorten hem on dress still)

Cost of FI's immigration fees, lawyer, etc: ~$1500. This is the priority for us.

I didn't really have a budget. I could afford more, but it's just not in me to pay that much for a dress for a few hours.

  • My dress was around $1200, but my MOH pulled a fast one on me and paid for part of my dress while I was changing back into my clothes.  The total cost of my dress was over my initial budget but it was absolutely worth it...I can't wait to wear it next year! :)
  • My parents paid for my dress, so I let my mom be in charge of setting the budget.  The budget was $3000, actual was $2250.  I am paying of the accessories and alteration fees.
  • I budgeted and spend $1200 on my dress! Love it!
  • I didn't have an exact budget. I knew that less would be better but I was wiling to pay whatever I needed to. Luckily the dress I fell in love with was only $500 :)
  • The budget for our entire wedding was $5000, and really, it's just a dress.  There are so many other things I wanted to spend our money on.  My plan was to spend less than $300, and I actually spent about $60, and it was perfectly "me."

So I guess how much one should spend on the dress should depend on the over all budget.  Your FI has a say in the budget, and it's something you need to plan together.

I picked under $1000, but not by much. My dress was a Maggie Sottero, but she has cheaper ones than the one I got.

I originally wanted to spend about half that much, but fell in love with the dress.

I spent just under $700 with the dress itself but with alterations and accessories it was just over $1000.

  • Dress: $300
Veil: $350 (Mom bought as a gift)
    Alterations: $280 (Mom paid for)
    Bra $50
    Shoes $50
Headpiece: $130 (Mom bought as a gift)
    Jewelry: $17

We had budgeted maybe $700 or so total for all my day-of attire, and then my mother insisted on buying me some pieces because she wasn't otherwise "contributing" to the wedding fund.  I hope I have a daughter or a niece or someone to pass them on to someday!
  • I budgeted $600 and paid $550 after tax and shipping. I expect alterations to be another $100-$150.
  • I spent $2500 on the dress. I did not really have a budget just went looking and found the one I loved. That is inclusive of all my alterations.
  • I spent $3300 on my dress alone and don't regret it at all! I felt incredible in it on my wedding day!

I budgeted about $1k for my dress, but I fell in love with a Maggie Sottero gown and there was a trunk show for the designer in my area so I save over $150 on my gown which was about $775 and it ended up being $615.

    Dress: $615 (parents paid for)

Veil: Free (mom made it... I couldn't stomach the thought of paying so much money for a veil, some veils cost more than my dress!)

Alterations: $0... they measured me correctly and it fit like a glove

Bustle: $75 (parents paid for since it was part of my gown)

    Shoes: $65

    Jewelery: All together around $120
  • We planned to spend $200, but the dress was $260 including shipping/tax. Not too bad :) Going for alterations next week, the only thing we need is for it to be shortened, so the cost shouldn't be too much.
