Can I be judgy today?

I'm cranky today and wanted to rant to the etiquette board. Only you would appreciate this.

I got a wedding invitation today. The wedding is 3/23 and the RSVP date is 2/8. They included registry info. I was kind of irked but got over it until I looked at their registry. None of this is awful by itself; it's more the quantities and combinations.

-91 place settings but only two settings of fine china. Several of them are full sets , but none of hem match.
-67 towel sets including towels, washcloths, and hand towels. Plus several other washcloth packs. 16 different colors.
-twin batman bed set (comforter, sheets, and throw)
-twin star wars bed set (comforter, sheets, and throw)
-2 more queen bed sets
-3 jewelry boxes
-sand paper
-2 counter top ovens
-3 toasters
-fridge
-20 - 30 kitchen towels
-10 rugs
-11 pieces of large furniture
-40 inch tv with tilt mount
-51 glasses
-4 casserole sets
And a ton more.

I just feel feel for this girl. I wish I could call her up and talk to her about it, but that would be rude too.

I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they registered for a lot, planning to look at reviews and stuff, and then delete a lot of it. But they should've deleted it before invites went out.
  • 91 place settings?!?! Do these people own a hotel?
Maybe the 91 place settings is a typo on their part?  Is she planning on running a B&B with all of those towels?
    Posted by snippet17
It's not a typo because it's like 10 different boxed sets (only requesting one of each) and then several different kinds of individual plates (requesting about 10 of each). I sat and counted them.
In Response to Re: Can I be judgy today? : I don't but I wish I did, or had a linky! Thinking f all the different settings reminded me of a friend's wedding. Her parents own a lodge and they had the reception there and when they opened it they had bought place settings from thrift stores and the like, so they had service for 8-10 of a dozen different patterns and her mom spent a long time making sure each table had all the same place settings, but they varied between tables. It was kind of cool to see each table a little different, and why else would you need 10 different sets of plates?
    Posted by Liatris2010
Oh I remember that! I was so confused just by the logic of that.

I do love that idea though of the different china on different tables. It sounds like it would have an awesome vintage vibe.
  • Could be possible they're planning on returning a lot of it for cash or store credit. Which is still pretty lame.

Yep. And their invitation didn't even say it was a wedding. "Invite you to a celebration of love." I knew they were getting married due to Facebook (and they're cousins) and because it's pretty obvious with an invitation, response card, and other info.

Too much! Maybe they are not allowed to get married
to each other, as they are cousins, so can only celebrate their love.

I take it they have a little boy?
Thank you for this. I needed a laugh.

Lol. I meant he's my cousin. She will be my cousin. Yeah, I want to caller and gently say to calm down, but I know they're really exacted. They've been together since they were 15 I think. So I'll just go and watch them have fun. And probably not get them a gift (I'm overwhelmed with the selection).

ETA: no they don't have any kids. That's why the twin bed sets are so baffling.
  • That is just plain crazy! When my sister and BIL registered a couple years ago, my BIL added little kid bedding and clothes, soda and various other food items on their Target registry. He did it as a joke and like the day before the shower, he deleted the little kid stuff. I did but the soda but they have a bar in their basement and I gave them other items related to the bar.

  • My fav is the Batman twin sheet set!!

I'm curious, what did the invite say?  No mention of wedding, marriage, union, anything?

  • I totally wonder if they plan on using those place settings and glasses for the wedding.

Maybe they forgot to delete some of those things... or maybe someone got a hold of their account and added things on without them even noticing.

I mean, 30 towels? Even if they were planning on returning stuff, aim higher lol.

  • They probably are already married and JP'ed for insurance purposes.

Maybe they realllllllly hate doing dishes. And laundry. So they want...three months worth.

  • The TV I feel is an inappropriate request, but perhaps they included these many sets of this and that with the idea of giving people options or to show that any one of those sets would work? I would certainly hope that they can't possibly expect people to get them all these excessive sets of this and that... can we say a tad on the greedy side?
  • Yikes.  I'd go off registry for a gift.

I personally do not think the TV is all that wrong/inappropiate. Most stores give the couple discounts after the event to finish off their registry. So they put it on the registry so if they get cash or gift cards to that store, they could save like 10 to 15 on the TV. I don't see the TV much different than a Kitchen Aide Mixer, as far as price goes, cause the nicer ones are a couple hundred dollars.

  • Personally I would think maybe they didn't understand the registry or that they made some kind of error. I  would be ok asking her if she realizes she regisered for 67 sets of towels, maybe she thinks she registered for 67 pieces of towel pieces.

I really think I'm going to stalk their registry a little and see if they delete anything. I'll keep y'all updated.

Do you think I could email them and ask which plate set thy would really, really like? So that way if it's a mistake, it would give them a heads up. I just don't want other people to think what I think.

It seems like she went shopping for her entire family.  Who needs 3 toasters????

ETA: Yes - I would email her and play dumb and ask her what she really wants from the list.  "Hey ____, I was checking out your registry and you have registered for such beautiful place settings!  Can you give me some guidance about which ones are your favorites?  I don't want to get you a set that isn't near the top of your list!"

  • Sounds like they already got married like a PP said and this "celebration of love" is to bring in the Uhaul full of stuff.  Because on here we always tell people if they elope then what they should have when they get back is a "celebration."
  • Maybe they're opening a hotel???
