Reading stuff like that makes me SOOOOOOO happy my FMIL isn't a raging bitch. You're such a good person for ignoring it. If it was me I would've said "Oh and by something more "YOU" do you mean slutty?" and then punched her in the face.

For the record, it's considered really bad ettiquette for the mother of the groom to intentionally outdress the mother of the bride. She is supposed to match the formality of her dress to that of your mother's. What FMIL said was so offensive IMO toward your wedding 'style' (for lack of a better word), and your mom. I'm sorry. I do agree with you though that it's probably best to let her do what she wants - she's the one who will look silly. I would say if you think your mom will feel hurt by her outfit, then I might ask her to reconsider.
