Wedding Woes

PLEASE HELP, RECEPTION HALL DOUBLE BOOKED ME, Please help!

I can't even believe what is happening to me right now.  My reception hall, the Portsmouth Pearl in Portsmouth, NH has double booked my reception and I now have no reception hall.  In their email, which was sent today at 4:50,they claimed that Paul Gallant, master cateror was fired for making several errors, including double booking my wedding, which is scheduled for Saturday September 10, 2011.  They even went so far as to say they lost my contract, but yet cashed my $500 deposit check which had my and the groom's name, the wedding date 9/10/11, and the Portsmouth Pearl written on it in the memo section.  I even have a copy of it from the bank.

I have already booked and made deposits for the florist, the ceremony venue and tent/chair rental, the photographer, and the DJ.  Please help, any suggestions are welcomed, I don't know what to do, I can't believe I have to try to find another venue, or cancel the wedding and loose all my deposits for other sites.  The ceremony is in a garden, also in Portsmouth.  I'm so afraid every other venue will be booked because 9/10/11 is such a popular date.  Please help, I am devastated

Have you called them and talked to them about the double booking? You have your contract, you have proof they deposited the check - you have a leg to stand on.

First: breathe. Then read the contract and see what it says about cancellation due to their error. Also, if you explain to your other vendors, many may be willing to work with you on another date, assuming they're free, especially since you'll be giving them 7+ month's notice.

P.S. I think it was kind of cowardly to send you the email at 4:50 PM on a Friday, it was pretty obnoxious not to at least call. Good luck!

when you go talk to them I would take someone with you who you trust and are comfortabe with but who does not have an emotional investment in the reception. sometimes it helps to have another voice when you are upset and emotional. at least for me.

I would agree with reading over your contract again and seeing what the policy is for cancellations. Then I would give them a call and want to speak to whoever the highest person in the venue is to have it straightened out. I would even go as far to say you will be contacting your lawyer as I am sure there are legal repurcussions for breaking their contract with you. You don't actually have to find one, just bringing it up should scare them into doing the right thing. They have to give you your money back there is no question about that, maybe you can tell them they will have to find a suitable venue to replace theirs? Either way you have rights and should confront them on their horrible decision and also let them know how unprofessional a email at 4:50 on a Friday is with such devastating news.
