Evening!

Re: Evening!

  • Steph - my home will always be open to friends wanting to visit England - so if we ever do become friends that will extend to any knotties as well. I will live about an hour(ish) away from London so it's close to all the touristy stuff.

  • Mica - What kind of doctor are you? I'm sure you've shared that before, but I'm pretty new so I missed it.

  • At least my cousin Raleigh lives in St. Pete.
  • Erin, that is fascinating stuff.

Also, allow me to give you all a verbal tour of Long Island:
Strip mall, diner, tanning salon, diner, nail salon, diner, hair salon, mall, diner, movie theater, bowling alley, strip mall tanning salon, diner, tanning salon, nail salon, tanning salon, overpriced restaurant, diner, mall, diner, mall, overpriced nightclub, movie theater, dudes driving Hummers while wearing far too much Ed Hardy, girls with orange skin in Juicy sweatpants carrying Coach bags, tanning salon, strip mall, vineyards, ocean.

I'm actually super pasty white, because my other options are "fake orange color" or skin cancer, and I'm not really cool with either of those.

I probably shouldn't mock Long Island as hard as I do, but I lived in Boston for seven years, and now that I'm back the whole place seems especially ridiculous.

  • I do love the diners though.  Other places just don't have diners like the diners here.

  • That is the one thing Raleigh is missing.  I've only found one good greasy spoon around here.

  • Dennys is the only 'diner' around here and I really don't think that counts.
  • MUNI you look so eerily like this girl I went to college with.

  • ::gasp:: Erin, that's like asking if Pizza Hut counts as pizza....

And Muni, our diners serve beer, I think you would enjoy them.  :-)

  • We have some diners, but they're really nothing to write home about. I'm not really a diner kind of girl though, so I don't think I'm missing much.

  • You mean Gypsy's Shiny Diner?  So do I.

And Musu, everybody has a doppleganger!  Although, i don't know if i actually look that much like me in my current sig picture.

Are you saying it doesn't? Because if so, we can't be friends. Pizza Hut is my favorite thing ever ;)

Angel, I think the thing with diners on Long Island is that they're everywhere, so if you grow up here, they end up forming a pretty central part of your childhood/young adulthood - there's Sunday breakfast after church at the diner when you're little, then in high school you hang out at the diner with your friends because there's nowhere else you're old enough to go, then when you're old enough to go out to bars/clubs, you pretty much always end up at the diner after a night of drinking.  It creates a lot of fond memories.

ETA:  And as a New Yorker, I'm pretty much not allowed to admit that chain-store pizza is "real" pizza, although I may or may not have the phone number for our local Papa Johns saved in my phone.

  • I don't think I do have a doppelganger. Everytime someone tells me I look "just like" someone and then shows me a picture, I don't think we look a thing alike.

  • Steph, I KNOW.  I've been to LonGisland.  (because that's how it's really pronounced).  I had the best lemon drop martini of my life in a NY diner.

And yeah, she actually does look kind of like me, Musu.  That is funny.
  • My student is engaged.  :)  He had etiquette questions, and while I did tell him about TK, I told him to have his FI contact me rather than post if she was worried about the question's reception.  What can I say?  I'm a softie.

That makes a lot of sense. We hung out at the Denny's, hahaha. It closed now though... we have a few real diners, but they aren't in my actual school district, so I didn't really go to them much. We used to go to Friendly's after school dances.

Oh, and Angel, Pizza hut is nasty.  As is Dominos, Little Ceaesars, Papa Johns, CiCi's etc.

it's not pizza if it isn't served at a mom and pop place that claims a connection to NY and has a manager with a brooklyn accent (fake or not).

ETA: Angel, not Erin.  reading fail
  • Well you are both super puuuurdy, MUNI, so it was a compliment. :) Your sig pic is beyond adorable.

Oh my God, please don't say "Lemon Drop" ever. I will never get over the hangover from those shots in college. Never.

ETA - Pizza Hut is delicious. I agree with you about all those other places though.

  • I love a good greasy spoon.
  • Muni, yes! Gypsy's Shiny Diner! I use to love that place!

I don't think chain store pizza is bad, per se, it's just not really the same food as real pizza.  It's like comparing someone's Italian grandmother's homemade lasagna to Stouffer's - they're just not even in the same category.

Also, if anyone is ever in Penn Station in NYC, you MUST get pizza from Rose's.  It's pretty much my favorite pizza ever in existence.
