Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Is anyone celebrating today? This weekend? Last weekend?
When I lived in Boston this was such a big holiday. Here in DC I don't get the impression that anyone cares one bit.
In other good news: My 5:30pm call was canceled. Hooray for another night off!

</div><div>Me! I'm a little bit glad to be out of NYC for this holiday. New York goes NUTS on St. Patty's, everyone is plastered, and things get kind of gross around the city.</div><div>
</div><div>Hoping to do something fun and low-key tonight, but didn't really come up with a plan in advance, so we'll see. :)</div>

We had our party last weekend...irish beer and an irish style dinner (corned beef, potatoes, carrots and cabbage) with irish soda bread and irish style cheese (dubliner guiness, etc.).
People were telling me that I'm a good cook based on that meal. I didn't know how to take that compliment because aside from the soda bread I just boiled everything beyond recognition.
My Bio - updated 26/3/2011
I heard something funny on the radio on the way in today too. The guy was talking about Rhode Island and how their bars don't open until 9. He's like "All of Boston is plastered already! YOUR DOING IT WRONG!" I was cracking up. Today is a huge day for Boston. Everyone is Irish today! The parade is Sunday though and I'm thinking about getting BF to go with me!
Life is good today.
I have my "Everyone loves an Irish Girl" shirt on. I thought we were going out for happy hour after work, but co worker crapped out... FI has class, so not sure. Same co worker might go out for dinner, so I might tag along.
There's a bar here that openned at like 6-7am and irish car bombs, whiskey etc are SUPER cheap in the am and keep getting more expensive as the day goes on... if only it were a weekend!
my 2012 shelf:
The Southie parade is so crazy. Not the actual parade, but the crowd it brings out. Good memories...
I think I'm obligated to go to the gym tonight. So I am green with envy for those who will go do anything.
Also...not to be a Debbie Downer, but today also would have been my dad's 55th birthday and this is the first year I haven't been able to "visit" him and bring him his traditional green carnation (my mother got him one every year since they'd been together, it was their "thing"). So not only am I wearing green for St. Pat's Day, I wear green for my dad.
jenjennifer - Yeah, DC doesn't make a big deal of St. Patrick's Day, but you'll think Election Day and Inauguration Day were the biggest holidays on earth!
Married!
But that's probably all I'm doing to celebrate today. I'm not really into it, but I am on my way to campus which is always interesting.
Last year I went to a great Irish bar and had a lot of fun. I don't drink much, but it was so cool with their Irish band and everything.
[QUOTE]Yes, I am wearing green. It's my favorite color so I'd wear it anyway! =) Also...not to be a Debbie Downer, but today also would have been my dad's 55th birthday and this is the first year I haven't been able to "visit" him and bring him his traditional green carnation (my mother got him one every year since they'd been together, it was their "thing"). Anyone ever see Family Guy when they make fun of the Irish? There's one that showed Ireland and the Irish people to be stupendously advanced in the field of science and technology, but then they discovered whiskey, which ruined everything for them. Also, the "day in the life of an Irish woman" - she alternates between popping out babies and getting slapped by her drunk husband. Lols.

I haven't gotten dressed yet, but I'm wearing my favorite green tights and I might go swing by the Chicago River to see it all dyed green and whatnot! YAY!! I love St. Patrick's Day! I don't really celebrate, I just love all the Irish love and green!!!
Also GPB My first name is Irish. People never believe me, because I have dark skin and features, but I am half Irish. So I am one who is also Irish everyday of the year, so I love to celebrate it. Heck if they had Armenian Day I'll celebrate the shiit out of that day too. I'm proud to be who I am.
Green Beer will be consumed tonight!
[QUOTE]Not wearing green. I don't really celebrate St. Patrick's Day. When I was living with my parents, we'd go to the parade in Newport, RI. Other than that, not a whole lot. I figure I'm Irish 365 days of the year, so everybody else can pretend to be Irish this one day. <strong> It's actually a little insulting that it seems people mostly celebrate "being Irish" by getting wasted on green beer, pretending to be leprechauns, and generally acting like idiots.</strong> jenjennifer - Yeah, DC doesn't make a big deal of St. Patrick's Day, but you'll think Election Day and Inauguration Day were the biggest holidays on earth!

I hear you, Cate. Like I said, total drunkenness and general grossness have surrounded me during my last 6 St. Patty's Days. But I just want to say that not everybody who gets a kick out of pretending to be Irish and the holiday in general is acting like an idiot or getting horribly wasted just to be wasted! I'm part Irish. I like green. I like shamrocks. I like that I can fake an Irish accent awfully convincingly when somewhat inebriated. And I like any holiday that gives me a reason to get together with friends and have fun. :)
I think it's all in the attitude. Yep, there are tons of people who just use it as an excuse to get ridiculously drunk, but there are plenty of others who have some appreciation for the holiday's history and enjoy showing a little light-hearted solidarity with their Irish brothers and sisters! I look at it a little like this: I'm not black, but I do take a few minutes every MLK day to watch the "I Have a Dream" speech and reflect on how far we've come, and how far we still have to go, as well as the fact that any "minority" problems we have in this country and this world aren't just the problem of that group, but everyone's problem. We're in this together. I don't have to be black to observe MLK day, and I don't have to be full-blooded Irish, or Irish at all, to appreciate St. Pat's.
I know the Irish aren't really an oppressed minority anymore, at least not the way they used to be, but it doesn't change how I feel about it.
Anyway, I'm going on, but my point is, I think it's possible to view some of the revelry as fun support and not just binge drinking with green accents. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

I didn't know that the first St. Patty's Day Parade was in NYC in 1762!

I agree with this.
I also have to put out there that being an Irish person, in Boston during these times is just FUN. I love the atmosphere, I love the people and I love how we all get together. Sure we drink, ALOT, but still it's about fun and being proud of who you are. Like I said before I am going to celebrate and be very proud of who I am. If you want to join, come on over, I'll buy ya a green beer. If not, that's cool too.
My celebration was last weekend. In Dallas, there is a parade down the street Greenville Ave, so it's very fitting. Everyone get's a little crazy and it's fun. And I proudly wore my green on Saturday.
I get that you don't have to be of a race, religion, or culture to celebrate another's festivals - heck, I'm going to an Indian festival with one of my colleagues next month and I'm so excited. But if you celebrated MLK Day by dressing in black-face and getting wasted and getting in fights and speaking in ebonics, then I think people would take offense to that, too. I choose to celebrate holidays in a way that is respectful to that culture.
My Dad was born in Ireland. I'm an Irish citizen and have an Irish passport. I'm really truly Irish. There's also something referred to as "Boston Irish" which means you're decendent from people who are from Ireland, and the Boston Irish culture (which also exists in cities like Syracuse & Chicago who had big Irish immigrant populations during the Potato Famine) is much more in line with St. Patrick's Day festivities. But I don't associate that with real Ireland at all.
[QUOTE]Marley, I'm all for people having fun for any reason, but the way St. Patrick's Day is celebrated is insulting and dumb. The Irish actually never really celebrated St. Patrick's Day until the early 90's when they realized that tourists were showing up by the thousands expecting some crazy party, and those looking to turn a profit decided to take advantage of it. So it's not really an Irish holiday anymore, it's an American holiday that the Irish (and the Chinese who manufacture those green hats and green "Kiss Me I'm Irish" shirts) use to make a buck. I get that you don't have to be of a race, religion, or culture to celebrate another's festivals - heck, I'm going to an Indian festival with one of my colleagues next month and I'm so excited. <strong> But if you celebrated MLK Day by dressing in black-face and getting wasted and getting in fights and speaking in ebonics,</strong> then I think people would take offense to that, too. Shiit, that sounds like an awesome good time to me.
Green cardigan, St. Patty's Day earrings and two bracelets, green eye-shadow. green eyes.
Really, the only thing I'm wearing that I wouldn't wear any other day are my earrings. They say "I'm Irish". Green is my color, I wear it a lot.
Tonight we will probably go to Greener Groundz. It's a coffe shop/cafe' place. Last year we went there for green beer and had an Irish themed pizza that was awesome.
I don't think it should be offensive to the Irish. We celebrate Mardi Gras, Cinco de Mayo, Chinese New Year, etc., and most of us aren't really a part of that culture.
Happy St. Patty's day everyone! I'm wearing my green today. I'm part Irish also.
I doubt if I will be doing much celebrating today though. I have to help get invitations ready for my FSIL's bridal shower. Although this weekend after her other shower, I plan on going to my aunt's house for an Irish meal.
Today is also me and FI's 3 year dating anniversary, so I plan on making warm brownies with mint ice cream. Yum!
