New York

(do not forward me elsewhere, I dislike other boards)

My husband and I are planning a trip possibly to new york (city) next fall and I was wondering if anyone had any recs. on hotels to check out or areas of the city to look for places in? Looking to stay under 300$/night if at all possible.

Thanks!

  • Ask the NY local board. ;)

  • You're totally gonna come right after I move, aren't you? Cry

One of my BMs and her H stayed at The Pod for the wedding and liked it.  My family and DH's stayed pretty close to our place but I never heard how they liked it.  I can ask though.  Under $300/night I think you should have some good options.
  • I havnt really discussed it with the husband but Im thinking we will come October 8-11th. I want to TRY to get SNL tickets if I can, id love to go see that.

I saw the pod on this newyorkhotels website I looked at, but I didnt know if I trusted that name! I will check it out. Lemmie know here or fb if you find anything out julez.
  • We're planning on being gone by then.  Big sad face.

The Pod seems kinda European and weird but I've heard good things about it and not just from my BM.

SNL - Our photog was over for dinner the other night and DH found out he goes to the tapings and sits in the writer's room b/c of his friends.  DH cannot wait to go with him.  He's so freakin' excited.
  • I love snl so much, i would love to just be in the audience but that would be even BETTER.

That sucks youre leaving, when abouts are you going?
  • Our lease is up September 1st.  Unless somehting amazing happens before then to make us stay, we're moving then.  We would move sooner, but I don't think there's any way to get out of our lease because the rental market is so bad here.

Just FYI, the NY Board is sometimes helpful on questions like this and sometimes not.  It's weird b/c it's such a slow board for such a big city.
  • Hmm, I suppose I could check it out, if I must! I thought there were more new yorkers here for some reason.
  • I like the Salisbury Hotel but I think it's right around the $300 range.  Right across the block from Carnegie Hall, Planet Hollywood, and around the corner from Mickey Mantle's and the Park.
  • There's OOT, Stina, ThePinkSuperhero, agk, and Alisonz on this board.  I'm sure there are more.  If you repost some night, I'm sure they'll have more info than me.

  • It looks like the salisbury is right around 300, so im puttin it on the list. The Pod looks like the type of place my husband would like, they dont have rates available for after June though so I would have to call to be certain, the prices look good though!
  • OOT! if you see this, ygm!

Also, you might want something a bit swankier, but here's a list of ICH hotels (Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn/Express, Staybridge, and Candlewood): Link

It's not showing rates because I can only pull employee rates, but there ya go.

What does ICH stand for? I will google.
  • Nevermind... Intercontinental hotels... I just saw it on the tab I have open. I suck.

  • I would definitely stalk Expedia and those places.  I found amazing rates for the Gramercy Park Hotel around the time of my wedding.  If the economy is still crap here in 7 months, you'll probably be able to get some swank hotel for a lot less than normal.
  • Holy SHITE julez. I love that hotel... wow. Now if only it wasnt so expensive :( I will definitely check out deals. That is amazing.
  • Yeah, they had a special last fall that was absolutley ridiculous.  I let my family know and NONE of them booked it.
  • WHAT! oh my god its beautiful, id live in that place if I could. Can i ask how low you got and how far in advance you booked?
  • You could also try booking something near the trains in Brooklyn or Queens.  That might save you money and you'll be close to Manhattan.
  • I can't remember exactly.  I actually looked it up for my brother's family flying from New Mexico and staying 4 nights.  Hotel and room for 4 of them in the 2k range.  It was totally one of those things where you just had to see the deal on Expedia  at the right time.

Sadly, I never catch one of those when I'm traveling!  Are you on the Travelzoo top 20 emailing list?
  • Nope ive never even heard of travelzoo (we never travel!), I will google that too!
  • YES, do travelzoo.  They send out a weekly email with their best deals and lots of times there are NYC hotels included.
  • I saw that! I signed up for it, I also signed up for the newsletter/specials for that nice hotel you mentioned.
  • If you can, go to the SNL rehearsal BEFORE the show.  They do more skits and it's infinitely more funny.  Plus, you get to help decide what actually goes on the show.  :)

My friend works for SNL sometimes and although I've never been, that's his suggestion.

  • You're welcome!  I had no idea and I live super close, lol.  I have no idea how it works for getting tickets, though.  If you want, I can email my friend.

  • Thats awesome! If you could find out and let me know. We would really like to go when we are there, but I also dont know how you get tickets. Im assuming wait in line after a certain time, though I have no idea.
  • Message sent.  Not sure how often he checks his FB, but I think it's pretty frequent.  I'll let you know if/when I get a reply!
