I'm an itunes idiot

I just recently started using itunes to buy  music (I went the illegal route much longer than I should have in college), and I don't get it. I've used itunes to put music on my ipod and had no problems. Now I buy itunes music, and they're not mp3s.  Meaning I can't play them anywhere but itunes (kind of understandable I guess), and now it's saying that every song I just paid for is "unable to be burned on an audio CD."

Now most likely I'm an idiot and either there is an easy fix for this or you just can't burn them and I didn't know that. I had no idea they weren't mp3s when I bought them. They're m4a files. I've never heard of that in my life.

Anyway, if you can be nice about it without making me feel any more idiotic than I already do, do you have any help for me?

Even better, what is another place to buy mp3s? I'm looking at amazon, but the selection isn't great. I keep finding songs "in the style of" the original artist but can't find the original artist. I'm trying to make a christmas CD for my mom, and she will be so sad if I can't find "Mary's Boy Child" specifically by Boney M. Seriously, she's been talking about this for weeks and I haven't had time to make it until now, when I discover that I'm a moron.

    We had a mmbership to mp3fiesta.com it was like 100.00? for a year and you could download anything even albums. Eerything on that site was compatible with my Ipod. It was peeeeeefect and worth the 100!
    But, we just found out the site isn't paying the artists for using their music, which could get us in trouble. My H is going to look for another site this weekend. I will give you a heads up if you have not found something already.

    Thanks, I just downloaded one from amazon, and I could (easily) set it up to immediately import to windows media player, which made my life way easier. Everything I downloaded from itunes went into my music, but wouldn't play in windows media player. So so far amazon is the winner, I just might not be able to find all of the exact songs.

    Do you think my mom would be mad if I found a song by the Boney M Tribute Band?

    use a converter program to change m4a's to mp3's. that's a lot of people's major gripe with itunes is that you buy music but it's not really yours, as apple uses different file formats on their files than the rest of the world.

    try looking on download.com or freewarezoom.com for programs to convert. i'm not sure if mediamonky can convert but it's a great program and works as an alternative to itunes as well. that's actually what i use to manage my ipod as i can't stand itunes.

    Thats weird...I am also a computer idiot too but I can burn CDs from my itunes.
