Car Insurance

Just wondering if any of you married ladies kept your old car insurance over USAA?

Interesting to me that in quote shopping for renewing our policies (we both renew right after the wedding), we got a quote from another (major) company for full coverage for almost $80/month less than USAA's quote.

Did they run your MVR (Motor vehicle report) and do you both have clean records within the last 3 yrs?

ETA: OH! And did they quote you with the same deductables? Coverages?

</div><div>The lady at the insurance company said to me when I called about it "Let me guess, he has USAA... um, as much as I hate to say this.... they tout that they do all this great stuff supporting servicemembers, but from the customers who have transferred here from them, best I can tell all they are really good at is bending you over a barrel".</div><div>
</div><div>I didn't really know what to say to that... because until she said that, I hadn't said anything about his employment or current company, just doublechecked the deductible amounts because it was so different.</div>

  • K, cause a lot of times insurance will run a quote without checking all of that to give you a low price. Part of the reason why I got out of insurance in the first place, lots of shady shiit going on.

    </div><div>thanks lady :)</div><div>
</div><div>Just seems strange to me, is all. Perhaps USAA didn't run mine when looking at adding me to his existing policy; FI called and talked to them. I talked to the other companies. I'll have him call to check. From my understanding, they don't always do that (they just go with whatever estimate, be it higher or lower) for a policy add-on since it's underwritten? maybe you know more about that CAB?</div><div>
    </div><div>Perhaps they'll match it either way. -shrug-</div>

  • I switched over to USAA. My insurance with them is much lower than what it was with State Farm. We do renter's insurance with them too. In my book, USAA kicks ass. Whatever that lady said was quite rude too.

<div>Oh I agree. Not condoning what she said in the slightest (even if it may be true for some people)... I was just commenting on how it surprised me that she just threw that out there because she didn't have any info that would have disclosed that to her at the point she made that comment. </div>

  • USAA wasn't the cheapest for me either and I had nothing on my record. I actually got better coverage for cheaper from another national company. They also gave me more discounts.

I switched to USAA.  We have our renter's insurance with them too.  They've been really good to us and I can't complain.  We really like them.  I think also think it's really inappropriate business practice for her to have said something like that to you.  Granted she's trying to sell insurance but bashing the other company is kind of like an icky strategy to me.

ETA: USAA was the cheapest for us and we checked with 5-6 different companies.

I had USAA before I got married and I switched over to H's USAA account.  They hold our car, renters insurance (my house is zoned as condo), home owner's (for H's house), my mortage, H mortage, and we will be moving our bank account to them when H gets back.  OH and my engagement ring and some other stuff came from their jewelry department.  I guess you can say we drank the kool-aid and like it! HAAA

Edit- i guess after a year of marrige I should say "our" haaaa

</div><div>good to know. When I told FI that I wanted to shop around to see if anyone would do better than that, he said he didn't see the point because he didn't think anyone would beat USAA. Maybe that was true for him when he got his policy years ago... but it doesn't appear to be the case in combining our policies. He was surprised also because supposedly from what he's heard, the company with the lowest quote at the moment is one of the more expensive when looking at the national average. </div><div>

Yeah we both bought one before we met each other and in different states.  We have to get rid of one shortly. PCSing as all.  We like to do things the hard way.  HAAA

Yeah you can buy jewerly from them.  Almost every piece that H has gotten me has come from there.  They even are starting to do vacations.  HAAA USAA will at some point take over the world.  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />

Both H and I had USAA before we got married, however when we moved to FL, H switched to Allstate and they raised his rate well over $150 a month. FL has a no liability law and idk for some reason it goes up ridiculously. So he switched to AllState for $99 a month for his brand new truck and his bike. Now, he added me and my jeep (both cars are full coverage since they both have loans on them) and for two cars and the bike, we pay $148 a month.

I love USAA's customer service, and I was really disappointed we couldn't keep them, we have them for a lot of other financial things and other insurance (my ring, and H's guns) but AllState had by far the best price for that - we also have pretty good driving records. H hasn't had a ticket and I haven't had one in 3 years or an accident that was my fault in over 5.

Edit for clarity - USAA raised his insurance over $150 a month, causing him to request quotes at other insurances and ultimately went to AllState. We even called USAA right before the wedding and they still couldnt match/beat AllState

  • I believe USAA determines your coverage cost on credit scores, as well... that may or may not be a factor for you.

Make sure to look into claims ratings on the company you're considering before you switch. After all, it is what you're ultimately paying for. Also, if you do decide to switch, do NOT cancel the current policy until you've signed with the new company, this insures that they're not giving you a bogus price, then changing it on you last minute. A company will low ball your price up until the very end to get your business. Lastly, if this company you're talking to is a broker, don't do it. Just... don't do it. It's so hard to get a hold of those people when you really need them.

Neat! They've been wonderful everytime we've called them with questions or when we called for a quote to add me to H's policy. The lady I spoke with was super sweet and seemed like she really just loved her job and was very talkative with other things besides car insurance (you know like when you're waiting while they run the MVR and such). I really like that we can call and speak with someone practically right away too.

  • That's good, AMH! They're really big on customer service here in CA, so I was wondering if it was the same in other states :) What I like about Allstate is that you have a direct contact when you need to speak to someone, not a call center (unless you call after hours, of course.)

Have you asked USAA to match the quote? USAA was cheaper for us. I was previously on State Farm because that is where my Mom had accounts. We both had terrible experiences with the local agent so I was happy to change. I haven't found a company that beats USAA's customer service, that's for sure. But everyone has their price.

  • Yeah I agree with Crime. Whatever cheapest quote you get, try and have USAA match it. H always seem to manage to have them lower or premium whenever we are about to renew policy. All he says is we are thinking about, blah blah. Haha. Oh and Allstate is very popular in Cali. My family and I had them there too!
  • Here's another thing to keep in mind. All of these places offer "switch now" quotes, and it's almost always cheaper for like rightnow. But if you keep in mind customer service, bundles, rate increased next year and convenience (for us...this is my H talking...hehe) then USAA made sense for us. It was just about dollar for dollar equal to what I was paying for Geico before we got married though, not more. If it's truly cheaper, go with another company!
    image
  • I switched to USAA after we got married.  I was previously on my parent's plan with State Farm and USAA was cheaper.  We also have our checking/savings with them, renter's insurance, H's Roth, and other financial stuff.  We've been really happy with their customer service!

Sidenote - In case anyone didn't know, you can get discounts on car rentals if you're a USAA member.  It's an especially good deal if you're under 25 bc you can get the underage renter fee waived at some of the places =)
  • Ours now is cheaper than what FI had with usaa. We have renters and car and it even dropped 80 a month this year so that was nice. Progressive screwed me over so we shopped around a lot and got the best one
  • we actually tried to get USAA to price match since I had friends do it successfully, but the two people we talked to refused to do it and said they couldn't go near our cost.. Maybe it depends on who you talk to or the price difference.
