i finally found an e-ring online that i love love love.
it's WAY over the top and way out of budget but i figured that it could be replicated by a jeweller instead of purchasing it from the designer where i found it.
so there happens to be a store in my city and i called them to ask if they have that ring. the woman informs me that, no they do not keep that ring in stock because so few are made but she'd by happy to send me information about it and then we could discuss what size diamond i want for it and what my budget is.
ummm, isn't that skipping a step? i want to TRY IT ON? how do i know that i like it? who would buy a ring without ever trying it on first? i also want to know roughtly what the ring costs. so i said to the woman - "i don't need information on the ring, i need to SEE the ring and i need to know how much it is".
silence on the other end of my phone and then a million reasons why she can't tell the price. finally i said "should i just call the NYC boutique and find out if they have it?" she said yes that's a good idea.
WTF. what kind of customer service is that? so irritating. and my SO pointed out that they must have replicas on hand because you but a ring in that price range, you automatically get a replica ring as well. why can't i try on a replica???

I've never heard of this before.

She gave you the answer. You just didn't want to hear it.
Essentially, you are ordering a custom made ring. Clearly, you cannot try on a custom made ring until it's actually, you know, made.

I don't understand what you are saying here. Are you supposed t0 get two rings?
If you have that much money, then just take a trip to where ever the ring is.
and i don't know how you can say it's going to look the same on my finger - i've tried on dozens of rings that i liked online or in the display, only to find out that it doesn't suit me.
LP11509 - they do the same when you buy expensive watches. they send a replica because the original is too valuable to wear every day. stupid i know. who buys something and then wears a fake? lol....

My interpretation was that yes, you get two rings - the actual one, and a replica made with CZ or something avoid theft...? I could be way off base here though, because like I said before I've never heard of this until now.
<div style="text-align:left;">ETA: Seems I was right. It just seems a little....stupid to me. What's the point in having such an expensive ring that you don't even feel comfortable wearing it??
</div>
Maybe ask if they have a ring in a similar style or see if another store has one in a similar style so you can get a feel for it. But if you find one online then you pretty much are running the risk of not being able to try it on beforehand.
I also think that is a shining example of customer service. She cannot help you because they physically do not have what you want. They also will not be able to get what you want because it's not the way they work. She was doing excellent customer service by recommending a different store who may be able to help you.
At PetSmart we dont' sell salt water fish, am I giving poor customer service by recommending a customer go to a store that does?

My H picked his ring online and I ordered and bought it without him trying it on first.
So, I guess us? :P
[QUOTE]So you're mad that they won't let you try on a ring you don't plan on purchasing from them anyway? Or am I missing something? ETA: What does this over the top ring look like if you're expecting a replica ring with it? That must be one huge rock.

if they would tell me how much the damned thing costs i would know if i plan to buy it from them. but right now, it's a complete mystery.
If I really wanted to try on the ring that bad, I'd go to a store that has it. How far are you from those stores?

I thought they told you they couldn't because it all depends on what diamond you want to include. The 4Cs would greatly effect how much the ring cost. If you wanted a large diamond but not have a great quality that would be much different than a large diamond of high quality.
I tried on a ring that I loved, but we couldn't purchase that exact one because it's the ring that the jeweler shows people.
[QUOTE]no it's not custom made. the NYC store has them, the Vancouver store has them. just not the city i'm in. she could have offered to have one sent from another store. and i don't know how you can say it's going to look the same on my finger - i've tried on dozens of rings that i liked online or in the display, only to find out that it doesn't suit me. What you implied in the first post was that you wanted a ring that you found online, and then you called a jewelry store to have it made, but wanted to see it first. It was confusing.
That being said, my answer was still applicable. They don't have the ring in stock because so few are made. If it's as expensive and exclusive as you say, I doubt they would send the ring to another store, anyway and your insistance that they do so leads me to read your post in a tone of voice, a la Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka.

You may be comfortable with it but is your fiance?
But seriously, you need to refine your expectations about customer service. Just because they can't do what you want, doesn't mean it is poor customer service as the PP pointed out.

I want an Oompa Loompa and I want one NOW!!
I still remember one time...We have this fish called "Opportunity fish" which are only in the stores for 3 months at a time because the breeder only breeds like...1000 and then stops. So a guy falls in love with one of them. Naturally we stop carrying them. He proceeds to rip a new asshole in every one of us as well as corporate, so corporate calls me "Get him the fish". Um...yeah, get him the fish...the fish that don't exist because you don't breed them? Sure, I'll get right on that...how about you give me a raise with the budget that doesn't exist while we're at it and I'll throw in some unicorns for good measure.
Actually I think I told him I would get him the fish when I could obtain unicorns, but at that point he had already said things like I was a "useless whore" "stupid bitch" and "waste of oxygen" so I think I was being nice.

[QUOTE]I was under the impression that you try on the model that store has for stock purposes, and then you get that same ring (re-sized and maybe a bigger or smaller center stone depending on taste/budget) ordered. i am in toronto so NYC and Vancouver are a flight away. am i the only person who has found that rings look different when you put them on vs. seeing them on display?

You're looking at a 3-5 carat diamond in a platnium setting. I think you can afford a passport and a flight to New York.
