Poll: to wear or not to wear...a diamond

This sprung up out of my last poll from yesterday about my ring...more than a few ladies have mentioned that they preferred other stones for their engagement rings, and it seems like a good topic to discuss...i did think about not getting a diamond but utlimately that's what i chose, i do think another stone would be kinda cool and def unique, princess di had a big a$$ sapphire for her engagement ring, what do u prefer??

I have a sapphire because I never really cared for diamonds. My mom had a sapphire for her e-ring and I always loved it so much more than all the diamond e-rings I've seenA good alternative to diamonds that I've heard a lot about lately is moissanite (sp?) and it is beautiful - I think Panda Burr has a picture floating around here somewhere with hers that she just got

Moissanite is beautiful. It has much more sparkle than a diamond and I believe it is the second hardest stone.

I am getting moissanite, and Panda has a pic posted in my "BF is looking for info on moissanite" thread. Hers is bee-yoo-tee-fool.I think it's a fantastic alternative to a diamond when you want a clear stone but you don't want a diamond.I can't wait for BF to actually get it! I mean, okay, yeah, I wanna marry him... but I am way more excited to get a moissanite than I would be about a diamond.:D

Neither my BF or I wanted to go with a diamond, so he is getting me a ruby. I don't think it's all that unique anymore to go with a different stone.

diamonds are gorgeous cuz they are clear so they go with everything but i definitely wouldnt mind a blue stone of some sort either. Its my fave color.

I agree Shasha - it isn't a unique thing anymore but that's not why I wanted it. Even though it is more popular now you don't see (well at least I haven't) a whole lot of e-rings that aren't diamonds so I still get a lot of comments about how different mine is

It's not that unique anymore to get something that's not a diamond for an e-ring. I think couples should do what works for them. I'm apparently more traditional than either my FI or I guessed. When we went looking for rings, I really preferred the diamond e-rings over other stones.

I prefer diamonds, but that's just because of the clear color, so I imagine I'd be perfectly content with a moisannite or a white sapphire. As for colored stones, I'd really want an emerald and that's about it. Green is my favorite color by far. :)Luckily I don't have to worry about picking. My e-ring has diamonds and wedding band is diamonds and emeralds. Or will be, once we get the dang thing made.

I wanted a clear stone, too. I wanted to be able to wear it with absolutely anything, and I wanted it to appear traditional.My favorite color is purple, and I have an amethyst ring that I wear every day, regardless of what I'm wearing... so I don't really know what was with that logic. My grandmother has a gorgeous (and enormous) alexandrite for her engagement ring. It's huuuuuuuuuuuge, and I love it.Grandma's rockin' the bling.

Yea...the only rings I wear are my college class ring and an opal and diamond ring BF got me for Valentine's day. The opal I wear rarely due to its fragility, so it's mostly the class ring on the right hand and that's it. It's white gold with black inset, so it goes with the rest of my jewelry and most of my black work suits.

I always had a vision about a small eturnity band in orange since that's my favorite color... FI is too traditional, for E-ring I got a very simple 2ct in platinum from Cartier, but they're putting mandarin garnet band together that I plan on wearing most of the time... I know it may look crazy but I can't help myself

Well, if it's a plain platinum band with a big honkin' diamond... that's a simple, classic design. Not small, not inexpensive... but it is technically simple.

Traciecook, To make the story short; Cartier was 40% cheaper than Tiffanys... same diamond cut, same quality! I had them thin the setting because it was too think... I'm size 8/10 person so it doesn't look goddy-just simple. Stores are pretty desparate for business right now... even Tiffany's was willing to nagociate... FI insisted that we invest in diamond now since it's a good time to buy.

If we wouldn't have been using my grandmother's (diamond) ring, I made it clear that a gemstone was fine. My request was small and old fashioned/antique.

I will prefer a diamond. My second choice would be sapphire, simply because it (along with amethyst and topaz) is my favourite gemstone. (My grandmother has a gigantic topaz I would LOVE to inherit some day.) Moissanite (sp?) seems nice, but I'm just too traditional, and still want a diamond.

Gaudy, not goddy. Negotiate, not nagociate.I have to disagree with you on some points. Even if Cartier was 40% cheaper than Tiffany's, that does not mean it was a good deal. Both of those companies play on their brand name. My guess is that you could have gotten the exact same ring, but without the Cartier stamp on it, for half the price. I'm also not a fan of the whole "invest in diamonds" thing. I don't care if you like diamonds, and that's what you want in your engagement ring, but to use investment as a reason is just ridiculous, in my opinion. Have you ever tried to resell a diamond? It's pretty damn hard to get back what you paid for it, unless you're doing a trade up thing with a jeweler.But like I said, these are just my opinions, so feel free to disagree with me.

If people want a diamond, that's fine, but for those who say it's because of tradition, do you know that diamonds aren't the tradition? Diamonds weren't used in engagement rings until the 40's and 50's, which is when De beers started their "A diamond is forever," campaign. So, basically De beers used clever marketing to convince people that they had to use diamonds.

I was totally lurking and came upon this thread- I'm not a diamond kind of gal, and I could never let FI spend a ton on my ring (um, nor would he want to!). My ring is a modern, simple design of a pink sapphire set in a thick white gold band. It's very different and unique, and I love it!

If I were not going to get a diamond, I would go with a ruby or a purple sapphire.
