Nails - Helpful tool

I just wanted to write a quick post, in case you are trying to get your nails in shape for the wedding.  I have been using one of the four sided file/buffers, and have had great results. If I don't use them, I often have ridges in my nails, and they break and peel like crazy, which I hate. The file, if used regularly, keeps my nails looking healthy and they grow without issues.  I do mine about once a week or so.Just passing some info along in case it could be of use to any others. :)

I second the four sided nail file/buffer.  It's amazing!  I've also been doing the Bath and Body works cuticle cream and OPI original formula Nail Envy. I do the nail file and cuticle cream once a week and apply the nail envy every other day. My nails have never looked better or stronger!

I've been using the Sally Hansen Nail Strengthener Clear Polish with Diamond something or another in it.  It comes in a silver bottle and rocks!  Seriously, it completely stops chips and peeling.  My nails grew twice as long in less than two weeks. But I also use a buffer sometimes.  Good stuff.

Good topic -- I loooooooooooove Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream.  It keeps my nails and the skin around super healthy.

Smo, isn't nail envy the best! I love the way my nails look and they feel like nothing could break them!  Katematch, the burts bees cuticle cream sounds like heaven, where can I find it? Ulta? Or would target have it too?

Yes! I bought mine on sale at Southdale at one of their salons. Katrina, please let me know too! Target?

You can get the Burt's Bees anywhere that Burt's products are sold; I've been using it for years. Mine is sitting in front of me at my desk as I type... :)

I've used the buffer in the past and love the immediate result, but over the long term, my nails get brittle and are more likely to peel.  I think it has to do with the fact that buffing is like taking a layer (in places) of the nail away, and it becomes more thin and then is prone to breaking/peeling at that point.  So, good right away, but for me it just doesn't work long-term!

hmmm... did you file your nails going back and forth on the edges, or just one way? I read, or maybe heard somewhere that if you go back and forth it allows more moisture in, which causes the nails to split and chip. I'll keep it in mind though definitely. Thanks for the heads up!

I buff across the nail surface, then file from the corners in.  I think it's just that buffing takes away a layer of nail, so when it grows out, it's less thick and happens to break more easily.  Maybe it's just me though!

For nail ridges, try OPI Ridge Filler -- it's a fab "polish" alone or as a base coat. And yah, Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream -- little round tin with a lemon on it.  Can get it at Target..

Ok, this might be a dumb question, but... with the 4-sided file/buffers, how exactly are you supposed to use it?  I have one, but I'm not sure if there's a proper order that you're supposed to use the 4 file-types in.  Usually I just use one of the courser files to really FILE the nail, and then I pick one of the finer files to smooth the edges afterwards.  But I've always assumed there's some more proper technique that I'm just not aware of.Does that question even make sense??  :)

I'll second the Burt's Bees lemon butter cuticle cream. I use it every other night before I go to bed. Great stuff!

the four sided that i have actually says "step1, step 2 etc..." so their is some special way but w/o those steps on it i'd be clueless

Ditto gogreen. Mine have steps and even little lables to them. I just go in order. I also bought one that had 6 different sides, for the nail tip edges, and then the top surface. That is the one I've been using.

You typically start from coarsest to finest if yours doesn't have labels :)

I love the Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle cream as well. Plus the Sally Hanson Maximum Growth polish, because I have trouble growing nails that are strong enough to stick around. FYI - The Burt's cuticle cream is also available at Byerly's or Lunds.

That's what I figured, but I can't tell the difference between my two fine sides, so I'm not sure which one is supposed to be the finisher... Ah well, however I use it, it seems to do the trick. :)
