Vent: Job interview was another bait and switch

Hi, ladies,I need to vent. I had an interview last-minute a few weeks ago. When I got there, I was told the position had already been filled. Fine, miscommunication. They interviewed me anyway and told me I should consider testing and/or going back to school to get certified to teach French and maybe they could offer me a half-day position. I elected not to do that because 1) the testing is expensive 2) the test is beyond my abilities and I would need to return to school and 3) there is not much of a market for a French teacher, so if I didn't get the job, then what?So today I go to the job interview almost 2 hours away. The guy was very nice. I was being interviewed to teach TV Production. I have to do one of those Meyers-Squibb type tests for personality, fine. Then I am told (he was like "I gotta be honest") that they're not sure the TV Production job is even open; it will probably go to a current employee's child who needs a job. So they say they like me and will I get certified in reading for them? It involves taking classes after work, but I'd begin teaching the subject right away because they really need Reading teachers. (He asked a previously applicant to do this and was waiting to hear if the district would let him put uncertified people in the positions). So he calls me this afternoon when I got home to ask me about it. He said the district said they'd let me if I promised to begin doing the classes right away. I really didn't have time to think about it, so I went with my gut; I told him no though because it was so far away, we'd have to get a second car, it's not in my field, and lastly, I just got my master's, I'm not ready to go back to school again yet. (I just told him it wasn't a good fit, I didn't give him all those reasons, LOL!)Did I make the wrong choice? I realize it may have opened some doors down the road, but at this point, it felt like they just needed bodies to teach it and were willing to take anyone.Note to interviewers: Please bring me in for the position for which I applied. If you want to interview me for other things, why not ask me over the phone if I'm open to such and such position so we can both best maximize our time? Vent over! Sorry!

Your gut is always a good thing to go with, I say.

Ditto Molly - and that does suck that they don't inform of these things before wasting 2 hours of your time.

I think you made the right decision. It doesn't sound like you would really be happy at that job and if it causes you to make major changes, like getting a second car, then it's not worth it. If it were close by and you didn't really have to change much other than just showing up for the job, then it would be good in the short term. If you're making a 2 hour drive for a job you don't really like, you're going to sour real fast. I drive an hour each way to a job I hate and it definitely puts me in a bad mood!

Agreeing with Molly--your gut is probably right.  You had reservations to begin with, and then the new set of craziness.  You should feel comfortable that you made the right move.Vibes for non-crazy interviews in the next go-around!

And I'm TOTALLY not teasing you at all... but I'm giggling because the test is called the Myers-Briggs. I'm licensed to administer it, so I know it well. I love that you used Squibb though. :P

Definitely go with your gut! It's almost always right. Ditto Karen, if you were driving that far for a job you hate, you'd be crazy in no time. It's going to be for the best. Keeping my fingers crossed that something "right" comes along for you soon! I actually left an interview once. I told the guy, I don't think this school is right for me, thanked him for the interview, and left. It was Penn State (the med school's in Hershey), and I don't do country living.

Molly - there is a Myers-Squibb. Bristol-Myers-Squibb does pharmaceuticals. Maybe that's what Kristin was thinking of.

nope, i fully back your decision. aside from your very, very valid reasons, your gut said the same. it makes no sense for you to drive that far for a job that is not in your field. unless they were offering some maaajjooorrrr money, no job not in your field is worth it. kick off your shoes and relax, you did the right thing.

LOL, Molly, ah, Bristol-Meyers-Squibb does do pharmaceuticals and the other one is the personality test! I hope you know what I meant! But, if it makes any difference, it wasn't actually the Meyers test, it was one geared towards teachers made up by the Gallup service. But same sort of deal as the corporate world thing. (I've taken the Gallup one before for a few other counties down here). I was just using the name of the test so you all would know what I was talking about, sorta, but then I got all confused!Shannon, I went to PSU for undergrad (State College) and I hated that as well! I hate country living! :) This place was super rural as well where I interviewed today! We discussed moving closer, but then DH and I both would have had super long commutes. And I can't do that to my husband. He might literally die of sleep deprivation with a 2 hour commute (1 hr each way!)

A two hour drive is way too far!  Trust me, I commuted from Greensburg to Robinson for two months and sometimes it took 2 hours each way.  It was terrible, I'd never do it again.  I think you make the right decision!

Yeah, I knew that you meant some type of test like that, but I loved that you used Squibb. A funny word in any context, so I thought you could use a laugh. :P

This is super late, but I am sorry that it was a disappointment (though I know you didn't have high hopes for it to begin with). Many continued job vibes!

I'm even more super-duper late, but I'm sorry this happened! I absolutely think you did the right thing...no question. It just doesn't make sense for you right now. Oh, and why do these SD think it's okay to do the bait & switch? Do they feel they need to? I don't get that. More vibes to get something next time!!
