When do you usually buy gifts?

I was having this debate with a friend and wanted to get your opinions--when you buy a gift off a registry for the wedding when do you purchase?  I prefer to get it early, but my friend said she gets it closer so its delivered close to the wedding?

I wouldn't get it until after the shower so that it's not confused as a shower gift, especially if you're going to both. Other than that, I don't think there's any rule on when to get wedding gifts, although thinking about it I'd wait until I got my invite probably.

For the shower I always buy as soon as I get the shower invitation because I want first dibs on a thoughtful gift (as thoughtful as it can be off of a registry.)If I wasn't going to the shower or there wasn't a shower and was doing it for the wedding, I'd do it as soon as possible.

If you follow etiquette, the gift should be purchased and sent before the wedding. I usually do it when I get the invitation.I had heard the fake rule that you have a year. This is a widespread idea that really isn't proper etiquette. I looked into it at one point and traditional etiquette says before which makes sense because you don't want it to show up when someone is on a honeymoon.

If it's a really close friend, I get the wedding present at the same time as the shower gift - and that's EARLY!!I get them both shipped to my house, so I can bring the shower gift to the shower and I'll mail the wedding gift closer to the day.  I only do this so I can get first dibs on the registry item I want to get the couple.  :-)If I don't have a particular thing from the registry I want to get them and am flexible on the gift, I'll send it about the time I rsvp for the wedding.

I pretty much to do as soon as I get the invite--mostly because I'm a planner like that, but also, because I like to have the best selection. :)

I do have to say though that our invites went out ~ 4 weeks ago and we have only gotten 4 gifts (from an invite list of 266)... so clearly my guest list doesn't follow my own personal rules!
