  • Meh, I did gay rights because I just watched Milk last night and loved it.

  • It is a good topic (gay rights). I would like to hear a valid opposite opinion on the subject.

  • I would, too, ricks.

  • We had a similar poll question a long time ago. There were some against and I expected them to respond that way. I am sure there were people who saw the poll and didn't answer because they are scared to be honest.
  • Ang - My husband would tell you that marriage should be between a man and a woman because the Bible says so. That allowing gay marriage violates the moral and religious beliefs of people of many religious who believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Whenever I ask him to explain me how 2 men/women getting married would affect him in any way shape or form, he can't give me a good answer. He just believes what he does because of what the Bible says and because of how he was raised by some of his close-minded family members. His family is a lot worse than he is. They outwardly express these views, roll their eyes at the mention of gays, their tone of voice changes. DH is respectful when he is around my gay friends. I blame his beliefs on this topic on his mother and grandmother.

  • Yep, GG, most people try to quote the Bible. That arguement does not fly with me. People twist the Bible to fit their own beliefs. Maybe you can change his POV on day.

  • I always tell my uber religious friends that if god didn't want it to happen he wouldn't have let it happen.

  • Ang - That's what I'm hoping for. He and I are pretty opposite in terms of political and religious beliefs, but we are respectful toward each other. It does anger me that he feels this way because I don't understand how my 2 gay friends getting married would affect him in anyway. I must say though that I have wanted to smack his mom, grandmother, and aunt across the face on several occasions. Him? Never. Two of the biggest things that I have taken from the Bible (and I don't know a lot about it) is that a) God and only God will judge others. It's no one else's job to do so. And b) God loves all people. I just don't get it and probably never will.

  • Which brings me to another issue of mine. People who pick and choose from the bible the things they decide to follow closely. Come on.

  • 1) Nope. 2) Function well on less than 6 hours of sleep 3) For.  They are people, just like anyone else.  One person's religious beliefs should not dictate how other people live their lives. Although, I don't think churches should be forced to perform a ceremony if it's against their beliefs.  But JOP and more liberal churches should be allowed to perform same-sex marriages if they wish.  Seriously, how does this "degrade" the morality of marriage? There are tons of marriages in the U.S. right now that I wouldn't call the best examples of morality...4) Nope.  Drink more.

  • I think rights should be the same across the board for eveyone and anyone. I think marriage should be a religious matter and not discussed or dictated at all by our law makers. Thus, I am not against certain religions holding to the Biblical belief that gay marriage and relations are not allowed.Domestic partnerships for all as far as my government is concerned.
  • Awesome, Ang. Awesome.

  • I never went to church as a kid and never read the bible. My grandmother believed that sunday was her off day, so we never did anything except go to breakfast at mitzels and make our weekly costco run.I just have my own views and believe those.

  • 1.  If you won't judge me for drinking capt cokes at noon, I won't judge you for wine at 2.2.  Drink several mixed drinks, a few shots, stay up till 4 am at an after bar party, and then go through the whole next day without needing a nap to be productive.3. Absolutely for.  They should be entitled to every legal right married couples are allowed under the law.  If religions don't want to let them have a spiritual marriage, that's the religion's decision.  But all couples in love should be allowed insurance rights, inheritance rights, ect.4.  Eh, if it ain't a disaster, take the day off.
  • 1) Do you judge me for drinking wine at 2 pm? Heck no 2) Name one thing you could do at 22 that you can't do now. Quit my job :( Only 2.5 more years! 3) Gay Rights (including marriage), for, against, or undecided and why? For! It's a simple question of equality. And I'd really like my best friends to be able to get married someday (soon) 4) Should I clean the house? Nah. I asked myself the same question and that's the answer I gave me too

  • Meaghan - I was just talking to DH about this last night. I don't like the idea of religion playing a part in politics - presidents, governors, mayors, members of Congress, etc pulling from their personal beliefs to mold laws. It's not okay in my book because they can't possibly represent all religious beliefs (or lack of beliefs.)

  • I don't think the government should tell me who I can fukc and that is what it all boils down to.

  • Definitely GG, there is a great quote from a West Wing episiode I think about a lot. A right wing senator asks Toby's characted "do you believe the Bible to be true?" and Toby says, "Yes sir, but I do not think any of us are smart enough to understand it." This sums it up for me.

    1) Never2) Eat pasta for dinner every night and be thin3) I honestly dont care. I dont know if its because its legal here, but I dont really care.4) As long as theres no visible dirt or bugs, its good for now.
  • 1) Nope, it's Sunday. 2) Probably handle my alcohol better. 3) For, I I do believe that we should all have the same rights. I hate it when the reasoning people give is that God says it's wrong. Now, I belive in God and believe He doesn't like it. At the same time though, not everyone believes in God, so please stop acting like everyone believes the same things you do! I hope that made sense....4) Nope, it's Sunday.

  • YES fish, I hate people that pick and choose.  Friends I knew had planned to go out to a nice steak house...had reservations and everything planned.  Then they realized that it was Good Friday and made everyone change all the plans just because they couldn't eat meat.  But they had no problems having premarital sex and living together, etc.Gah, that grinds my gears.

  • Right on, Ricks. Right on. One of my favorite quotes in Milk was when he said, "If it's true that children are mimicking their teachers, there'd be a whole lot more nuns running around."

  • 1) Do you judge me for drinking wine at 2 pm? Uh, only if you judge me for drinking beer at said time. (No) 2) Name one thing you could do at 22 that you can't do now. Stay up all night and still be a functional human being the next day. 3) Gay Rights (including marriage), for, against, or undecided and why? Absolutely for. Who are we (or anyone else) to judge whether or not someone can get married? 4) Should I clean the house? Only if you have people coming over. Otherwise, procrastinate, procrastinate, procrastinate!
  • bint - my friend in ny had a 'wedding' and all, but it's the legal part that kills me.  They can't be on the same health insurance plan, if either one of them gets sick, the other has no legal rights, etc.

  • I like this quote someone had on the nest, although I don't apply it to all Christians. "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." -Mahatma Gandhi

  • Meaghan - That's a very smart quote!
