Just thought I'd update on how bad my day is today. We had a meeting about the G20 summit.  I will come to work on wednesday- and be locked in the building until saturday morning.The building will be on lock down thursday and friday- no food. no showers. sleeping under our desks.hopefully something changes- but this sucks.

    No food? Really?We haven't figured out what we are doing, but we might have an anarchist protest right next to us (they applied for a permit). If that's the case, we'd be on lock-down with shifts for having a team here 24 hours each day. Being in a building filled with birds and made of glass makes me nervous.

    Will upper management also be in lockdown with no food, showers and sleeping under their desks?This can't be legal -- and I wonder if they are saying this to justify shutting down the office during the summit?I think I would be coming down with a very bad case of the stomach flu on Tuesday night...

    What?  That is so far from illegal.  Does your work really expect you to be there, sleeping under your desk, with no showers? NO FOOD?  How can an employer ask that of his employee?  My co-workers husband had a securities meeting at work about 1 month ago (he's in insurance) and they encouraged his office to not be opened during the summit because of the chaos.  Traffic alone will make it virtually impossible to get to and from downtown.  I seriously don't get people sometimes.  Sorry Sara, I hope that this changes so you don't have to sleep under your desk and go hungry.

    I'm worried about the birds N!  I had no idea what a big security issue the summit is going to be until I saw a clip on the news earlier this week.  They were interviewing a dirty looking guy who declined to give his name.  He said that the protesters (which he is one) are planning to be violent and he said, "people are going to get killed."  The news said people have been in town scouting out locations and taking pictures of buildings and, "saving human feces for throwing."  People are sick.

    Wow. I really don't think this is legal. I say we all just leave western PA from that Wednesday through Sunday. Who's coming with me??

    That is insane.  I'm sure they'd come up with some way around the food situation though- they can't expect you not to eat for 3 days.  They'll probably bring in lots of microwaveable stuff on Wednesday and expect you to live off that for 3 days, which totally sucks.  If you're on lockdown, I can understand no food going in or out though because who knows what would happen if someone snuck in or ambushed a delivery guy.You said that some people are allowed to work from home but you're not, right?  Is there any way you can get out of it or do you absolutely have to be there?

    Most of you know where I work- most departments have those 2 days off.  But since I work in foreign exchange- we still have to be here. My manager is working from home. bleh. And most people in my department are going to other offices around Pittsburgh- and even one in New Jersey. I need a recorded phone line- so I have to be in the office. They are now talking about everyone making food and bringing it in on wednedsay and leaving it here for the few people that have to stay. I just told FI and he is p!ssed. He doesnt want me down here at all with all the chaos. I guess my building is going on lock down because they are afraid of all the protestors and what not. thats a good point- I wonder if this is legal... and if so- I hope I get free vaca days or something

    That is totally insane...can you take vacation days during that time?  I think I defintiely would.  What happens if someone needs to be somewhere else or they have kids???

    Are you serious N!? Thats ridiculous. Is your comp going to be open? All your assets are pretty much physical and right inside your building- do they have any plans for security? Most people don't have to stay in the building, but I'm single and kidless- so I'm a prime canidate. Plus... I kinda volunteered. It was one of those things that she asked for volunteers and all you could hear were crickets. She was kinda looking at me and another kid- we're both single and live relatively close to the city if anything were to happen. Hopefully things will change- the liability for this has got to be huge.

    Um, your manager is working from home but you have to deal with this? WTF? It seems like there is no way they can MAKE you do this. I don't blame your FI for being upset!

    Marburs, you need to go to HR at least, but better yet, and employment law lawyer.  This doesn't sound right.  What would they do if you had already scheduled vacation that day?  just make some other person stay in the building for 3 days and sleep under the desk?  and what sort of compensation are they offering you for this honor?  If you are "required" to be in the building 24 hours round the clock, you need to be reimbursed SIGNIFICANTLY for that time, salaried or not.

The actual building from the outside.Just another point to why all non-essential businesses should be mandated to close during those days - at the very least within the city.  But, honestly - I think it should be city and surrounding areas.Sara - that's awful - I definitely hope they rethink this. :/I just heard yesterday that West Mifflin area schools are all closing Wed-Fri due to their proximity to the Allegheny airport.

    We're waiting to hear for sure about the protesters in our park. If it's a go, then we are closed and might have to do a few shifts to cover taking care of the animals 24 hours each day. If there is a protest, then we will have state police using our building for security (on our roofs, etc), so it would actually make it safer. So far, the plan is to stay open if there is no protest, but a decision has not been made.

    well, I'm salary- so I dont know about overtime. They are being really nice about it, so no lawyers needed yet- but thank-you, I'll let you know if it comes to that. And wow N- that's so crazy. I guess it might be profitable to stay open since some people from the summit might want to see some of the city- and that would be to come see your place. But that would require them walking across the bridge- its not far, but I wonder if anyone would do that. I'm hopeing you have the days off. That would make me nervous with protestors being around. And as far as the animals- they are saying noone will be able to drive in or out, so hopefully you guys can figure something out for them.

    yeah, hindsight's 20/20. I probably should not have volunteered. Honestly though- I was thinking, all these people have kids- and I can def run faster than the ones who don't. lol- its irrational thought, but that's just what was going through my head. I'm avoiding reading about protestors. the coworker who is also staying is now talking about people trying to get in to blow up the building. I guess thats another reason its on lockdown. I hope its just all talk

    WOW. I just finally caught up with this thread. Living in your office for days, people supposedly being killed....I am so sorry for all of you ladies that have to deal with this! I think I can for once say, I'm glad we don't live in the Pgh area anymore! I hope this is all just media hype, and it doesn't get as bad...
