Selfish Poll - WR Questions

1. The only makeup I own is from CVS. I'm doing my own wedding makeup. I'm going to the mall to buy some. What brand is the best?

2. What's a good intro song?

3. And cake cutting song?

4. What else should I put in my BM gifts (woven beach bag and beach towel? I don't want to do sunscreen or lotion kind of stuff. Nor a ton of little cheap things. I was thinking gourmet lemonade or ice tea box?)

5. Should I have a display cake or no? I keep going back and forth.

    1. The only makeup I own is from CVS. I'm doing my own wedding makeup. I'm going to the mall to buy some. What brand is the best?
My friends swear by MAC but I honestly don't know, I'm not big into makeup

    2. What's a good intro song?
Intro, like entrance to the reception? My friend and her DH came into Accidently In Love and it was cute, the last wedding I was at they came in to Lets get ready to rumble. BF says he wants to come into Enter Sandman like Marino Rivera one day.

    3. And cake cutting song?
I'm always a fan of "sugar sugar" but I was at one once where the DJ accidently played Katy Perry's "I kissed a girl" it was certainly memorable!

    4. What else should I put in my BM gifts (woven beach bag and beach towel? I don't want to do sunscreen or lotion kind of stuff. Nor a ton of little cheap things. I was thinking gourmet lemonade or ice tea box?)
I really like the lemonade or iced tea idea, maybe drinking glasses too? I love drinking glasses. lol

    5. Should I have a display cake or no? I keep going back and forth.
YES because everything else you've done is so friggen adorable that I want to see more. ;-)

    1. I adore Bare Minerals.  They have kits that come with brushes and I adore the brushes.  The kits are super easy to use (they have picture instructions which make them foolproof).  Check them out!

    http://bareescentuals.com/Makeup%20Collections/BM_COLLECTIONS,default,sc.html?psortb1=price&psortd1=1&start=0&sz=9&view=grid

**I get Bare Minerals at Sephora or online.**

    4.  What about flip flops?  Or a pretty wrap?  I do like the lemonade/ice tea idea too...I just figured I'd offer up some other suggestions!

Sorry I skipped the other questions, I haven't been to enough weddings to know good suggestions =)

    1. The only makeup I own is from CVS. I'm doing my own wedding makeup. I'm going to the mall to buy some. What brand is the best?
If you want a natural look, I would recommend Trish McEvoy.  Her husband is a dermatologist, and all the products are very natural looking for light skin tones.  MAC tends to be more dramatic (and marketed to people with darker skin because of the bright colors) so I probably wouldn't recommend it for this.  Clinique is also a good brand for a natural effect.  I also own Bobby Brown, especially their lip gloss.  You may want to buy a bottle of MAC Fix+ which is a finishing spray - it will lock in your make-up with a light spritz and leave you looking fresh and natural (just practice since it can come out wrong if you aren't used to it).

Best thing you can do is pick a few brands you like (at Macy's, Nordstrom's, or any department store with makeup counters) and let the technician know you are looking for bridal makeup - they should do a whole demo on your face and teach you how to use the products.  Buy what you like, then do a demo at another counter to find the products you didn't get at the first.

    2. What's a good intro song?
Sorry, no suggestions.  You probably want something more up-beat here.

    3. And cake cutting song?
This is always a fun place to put a song that has personal meaning.  I've heard of people playing their parents' wedding songs at this time, etc.

    4. What else should I put in my BM gifts (woven beach bag and beach towel? I don't want to do sunscreen or lotion kind of stuff. Nor a ton of little cheap things. I was thinking gourmet lemonade or ice tea box?)
You're from Boston area - have you heard of Del's Lemonade?  It's huge in RI and in Southern MA.  If it's something you're familiar with, they sell it in powdered form (you can order it online, I think).  It's very local, and a fun treat.

    5. Should I have a display cake or no? I keep going back and forth.
I don't understand - as opposed to an eating cake?

I am makeup clueless.  Yould always go to the makeup counter at the mall and have them give you a free facial and then buy some of the stuff they suggest.  There's a Bare Minerals at our mall but I've never been.

    2. What's a good intro song?
We're walking into "These Are Days" by 10,000 Maniacs.

    3. And cake cutting song?
I still can't think of one so I"ll be reading these answers too.

    4. What else should I put in my BM gifts (woven beach bag and beach towel? I don't want to do sunscreen or lotion kind of stuff. Nor a ton of little cheap things. I was thinking gourmet lemonade or ice tea box?)
Either of those ideas seem nice.  Or candy.  I like candy.

    5. Should I have a display cake or no? I keep going back and forth.
Maybe.  Are you doing sheet cake?  What would it look like?  Need more details.

Re: Cake - We're serving cheesecake directly from the kitchen so it will be chilled.

We're thinking of getting a display cake purely for display/cutting purposes and then maybe serving it at the brunch the next morning. Is it worth it or no?

With a little more makeup advice - I was in acting from the age of 4, so I have significant experience doing makeup.  I've actually done the makeup for 2 aunts and several friends for their weddings, so it's a subject I'm familiar with.

Bare Minerals is a great day-to-day make-up, but mineral based makeup can reflect with flash, so for a heavily photographed day such as your wedding, it's not recommended.

It depends how much make-up you want to wear - if you're not someone who normally wears makeup and you like your skin complexion, I'd suggest skipping a foundation.  You can do a tinted moisturizer (again, recommend Trish McEvoy or Clinique for this one) which will lightly blend your complexion without looking caked or heavy.  Then set it with a powder (using a powder brush - do NOT buy brushes at the mall, CVS has great ones for 1/4 the price) - Clinique has the best powder IMO, but find one that looks good with your skin tone.

I would then recommend a little bronzer (get one without any glitter for the most natural look - mine is from Sephora, but I forget the brand - it's in a little red box, if that helps) - apply this with the same powder brush.  Start from next to your nose and brush up your cheek bones, then start at your temples and draw a 3, running up to your forehead, back past your temple down your cheekbone, out towards your ear, and then down along your jaw line.  This will keep you from looking like a ghost.

Then a little blush on the apples of your cheeks.  I recommend a slightly more firm brush for this one (the powder brush would spread the makeup too wide).

Make sure you use matte colors for your eyes - nothing glittery or shiny because that will make you look funny in pictures with the flash.  Pinks, nudes, pearls are all good colors, but have the makeup artists try some different stuff to see what you like.  Eye shadow is typically applied with a light color over the lid, with a slightly darker color brushed from the edge of the eye, down along the edge of the lid, then back and up along the crease.  But each eye type is different, so the makeup artists should be able to help you learn how to create the effect you like.

Eyeliner (whatever you prefer) and waterproof mascara, along with some lip liner/lipstick/ gloss (whatever you prefer - Trish McEvoy has some great stuff IMO) and you're good to go!

Whatever you go with, try taking pictures of it first because it can look different.  If someone has a nice camera, have them give it a shot.  You want to make sure your makeup looks as good in photos as it does in person.

Let me know if you want any more advice!  I think that kind of covers it, though.

    1. The only makeup I own is from CVS. I'm doing my own wedding makeup. I'm going to the mall to buy some. What brand is the best?
I use pretty much all Almay and Clinique. Both brands are hypoallergenic and wear nicely. I would recommend checking out Clinique's Gentle Light Powder - it photographs like a dream.

    2. What's a good intro song?
You guys need something light and happy and sweet. Hence, my suggestions:
Beach Boys - God Only Knows
Ingrid Michaelson - The Way I Am
Natalie Cole - This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)
Aretha Franklin - You Send Me

    3. And cake cutting song?
We're using Adam Sandler's "Grow Old With You". We stole it directly from rickylee, because when they did it, it was so damn adorable. :)

    4. What else should I put in my BM gifts (woven beach bag and beach towel? I don't want to do sunscreen or lotion kind of stuff. Nor a ton of little cheap things. I was thinking gourmet lemonade or ice tea box?)
I think a gourmet lemonade would be super cute. Maybe get a pair of glasses to go with it?

I'm no good for the make-up or more WR suggestions, but I can do gifts.

    4. I think the gourmet lemonade or ice tea box is a great idea. I think Buttons glasses idea would pair really well with that. Since yu are going with a beach themed gift, what about adding a great summer read for each of your girls and so easy to personalize to their tastes too.

Oh Kat-- You should have display crumb cakes. I love crumb cake and you put those tiny adorable flags on them too!

    1) I wear a lot of lancome, Clinque makes me break out. But honestly, you might be better off having someone do your make-up for the cost of buying new products. Clinque waterproof mascara DOES NOT MOVE. It takes me days to get it off, so if you are a cryer, I would splurge on that.

    2) We are walking in and then immediately doing the first dance, so first dance song, right now we are leaning towards Someone Like You, Van Morrison.

    3) Sugar pie, honey bunch.

    Thanks everyone!

I actually hate the mineral makeup - so I'll look into Clinque, Lancome and MAC. Those seem to be favorites.

I think I may head to the mall during lunch to look for lemonade and glasses. :D

MAC, Make-up Fovever, and Smashbox are all good.  I believe that they all have really good primers (I haven't tried MAC's) and High Definition lines which are good for pictures.

I also have used Revlon's Photo Finish foundation and powder.  It's half the price of the other brands and looks really good IRL and in photos.  It's also probably the longest lasting make-up I've ever used.  Even Revlon's Color Stay line is really good.  I used it for my cousin's and my sister's weddings (I was MOH so lots of pictures).  They were both in August but my make-up stayed perfect in the heat.

IMO, you should have a primer, a liquid foundation, pressed or loose powder, light bronzer, blush, and finishing powder.

I don't really have any suggestions for the other questions.  Except the cake.   I also think that even just a small 2-tier cake would be nice.

Afraid I can't help you there.  I don't wear any except the basic stuff from drugstores as well, and generally then only mascara.  My mom SWEARS by Estee Lauder (sp?) and Bare Minerals, and a friend of mine really likes MAC.

    2. What's a good intro song?
We're doing Dropkick Murphys.  For the BP:  The Gang's All Here.  For us:  Shipping up to Boston (but only the instrumental opening).  For parents:  Huey Lewis and the News - Power of Love.

    3. And cake cutting song?
How Sweet it is - James Taylor

Loving the cute glasses and lemonade or tea idea.  Go Buttons!

    5. Should I have a display cake or no? I keep going back and forth.
I think people really like seeing the wedding cake and seeing the cutting and the feeding etc, so you definitely need to have SOMETHING.  Could you bring a cheesecake from the back and use it for the cutting?  That would cut down on cost.  If it's not a possibility, I would at the very least to go Walmart or somewhere and get a small 2 tier cake for display and cutting purposes.

I've always been a fan of CLinique, MAC, and Smachbox. You seen to be light on makeup (like me) so MAC might be a bit much but they're eyeshadows are AWESOME! Around here, they'll do you makeup if you make a $50 purchase. You can have them do a trial run and get the makeup goods to use at home. I also like Lancome and Estee Lauder. I'd ask the girls at the counter about if they'd do your makeup, it might actually be chaper (or Free) than if you buy it all and do it yourself.

    I'm useless with songs...Sowwy.

    4. What else should I put in my BM gifts (woven beach bag and beach towel? I don't want to do sunscreen or lotion kind of stuff. Nor a ton of little cheap things. I was thinking gourmet lemonade or ice tea box?)
Old Navy has some super cute printed flip flops. You could also get them a fun water bottle. FMIL and I love Trudeau water bottles, the ones we have don't sweat and keep your water cold for a couple hours.

    5. Should I have a display cake or no? I keep going back and forth.
You could do a little cake but people may expect you to serve the regular cake instead of cheesecake. When I worked at a banquet hall, one couple's wedding cake was cheesecake. It looked like a normal wedding cake and was frosted. I want to say it was buttercream but I'm not 100%. Anyways, it seems like it would be too rich but it was amazing. The cake below is actually a cheesecake. It's not the most amazing but it gives you an idea. I'm sure your bakery could figure something out.

I don't wear makeup regularly but I have a mix of things - I use almay for my concealer, eyeliner, and mascara, I have phsyicians formula for my powder and blush, and my eye makeup is MAC.

    Or something like this:

MAC will do your makeup as long as you agree to buy $50 worth of makeup (that was in NYC, so it might be less in your area).  I did this for a wedding and I was very pleased with the result.

I honestly don't know about the songs.  Sorry I suck :(

Crate and barrel has lemonade (about $6 a box). It might be seasonal though.  What about other things that are beach related (I'm sensing a theme here) - Any type of game? Books? Gift certificate to barnes and noble? A nice pair of sunglasses (Ruelala.com currently has Betsey Johnson Sunglass for about $29-$35 a pair. Originally $100 each)
