I'm going to a wedding at B'nai Tikvah next week so I can let you know how it goes.  Also, I believe kosher catering costs more at a lot of venues, so you might want to consider that as you are researching prices for places.  That's probably one of the reasons that temples cost more.

We are getting married at Mayfair on a Friday evening.  When we went to see Crystal Plaze, they wanted $ 300 per plate in September on a Sat night.

Wow, I can't imagine having to visit all of those. I was at a wedding at the Grand Marquis this past weekend and the main entree was terrible. CH was nothing to rave about but not as bad as the meal. The room is pretty and a nice open dome in the middle- for me, DJ and music can make up for what the meal lacked and I had an awesome time. I think you def. need to narrow that list down before you start traveling all over.

Mayfair Farms - My sister got married here in 2003 and it was PHENOMENAL. A fellow March '09 knottie got married here this year and also had a wonderful experience. The food and service are amazing. Excelsior in New Jersey - If you're talking Saddle Brook, it sucks. I've been there every June for the past several years for a theater formal, and the food is terrible, the service "eh," and the decor kind of ick. Crystal Plaza - Beautiful, but expensive. And everyone with whom we came in contact when we went there was completely obnoxious and off-putting. Richfield Regency - My cousin got married here March of '08. I wasn't that impressed. It was fine, just nothing memorable. The one thing I remember is that they put the Viennese tables on the dance floor, so they rushed them into and out of the room before people could get a really good look at what was there. It was crazy how short a time they brought it out for so they could restart the dancing.

How do I politely tell a caterer whom I would like to use that I do not want to see the three places where he is taking us for appointments (the hotels at newark airport)?  I don't want to waste his time or our own, but really want to take these places off of the list. Thanks!

Just say, "We are not interested in those places." It's as simple as that. It's your money.

Crystal plaza is over your budget (I went to look almost 2 years ago for a sunday and it was like $150 without all the yummy add ons), it's amazing thoWilshire Grand priced me at $140 (almost 2 years ago) for a Sunday night kosher wedding. I wasn't impressed with them or their menu.I went to a really pretty Booklake wedding (of a knottie on here) but it wasn't kosher so I don't know if they do that.BIL had his wedding at Sephardic temple and it's truly a gorgeous sanctuary room (where the ceremony would be) the ballroom was very standard had the tulle in the ceiling like they do in the Atrium if you like that. I think they paid $125 for a Sat night 2 years ago so they can prob work with your budget for a Sunday. It was VERY annoying for NJ/NYC guests transportation wise FYI.Going to a kosher wedding at Grand Marquis in November, can update you after.

What didn't impress you about Wilshire Grand?  I'm going to Brooklake tonight to check it out.  What made transportation annoying for NJ/NYC guests for Sephardic temple?
  • edited December 2011
It wasn't a dramatic entrance, though most won't care. But we drove up and were like "This is it?"I didn't like the outdoor ceremony area at all and that's what I wanted. Brooklake's outdoor ceremony was gorgeous. The Ballroom at Wilshire seemed too dark and dreary. The transportation was annoying because they got coach buses from NJ to LI and they drove through NYC and it was a nightmare. We were late to the wedding (B&G on the bus with us) so wedding started late. They got lost on the way home and the ride took like 2 hours. I got home at 4am and was exhausted. You want your wedding to end with a bang not with people annoyed LOL.I have a spreadsheet from my search. I originally wanted a Sunday Kosher wedding, hopefully this can help you a little:  VenueDoc.pdf

Thank you so much for your spreadsheet!  It is very helpful because we're planning a kosher party for around the same number. What did you think of the Green Tea Country Club?

Happy to help! I loved it, but for their larger ballroom. I didn't like the smaller room AT ALL. I also don't remember what their deal with the kosher was...
  • edited December 2011
Is the smaller ballroom the one that you'd have for around 150 people?  Why didn't you like it?
  • edited December 2011
I can't remember exactly to be honest. I just remember being really impressed with the large room and disappointed with the smaller one. The large one was like 400 people ++ or something

The price quoted from there was very reasonable.  50$ including tax and service charge plus caterer.  I think it is too far away though from my fiance's family in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.  I love how it is right on the water!  Anyway, thanks for the info!  Have a good weekend!

I am getting married at the Wilshire Grand in Oct.I agree the outside is not the most impressive but I really like the inside and I think the ballroom is beautiful.   My best friend's temple has all their events at the Wilshire and I hear the Kosher food is very good but I have never tasted it. I don't know if Kosher prices are much more $$ but I would suggest going to checkc it out and talking to Anne Koorse - she is WONDERFUL. I bet you can get them under $110. FYI the only con was the expensive hotel block and the $6 per person maitre d/captain tip on top of the 27%.

The Wilshire Grand was too expensive for us!  It is beautiful though!
