Re: Flame Free Friday

  • edited December 2011
Not necessarily a flame-free worthy post, maybe a vent or a B&M.  What is up with people who stare over cubicle walls?  It's bad enough that my cubicle is missing a panel that leaves me with only 3 walls instead of 3.5.  People walk by and are always looking in (or dodge in to steal tissues without asking as was once the case), and that already feels like a bit of an invasion.  Yesterday, this guy walked by the open wall of my cube, then as he rounds the corner he leers over the other wall.  I understand that when you walk by the open part it's only natural to look at people or the interesting things people have in their cubicles, but once you're along the path of gray walls, how about looking out the windows rather than staring at me through the corner of your eyes.  It's creepy!

Dude, speaking of rude people just coming and barging in on your space...I had a guy do that yesterday.  He had someone coming to a meeting (he is a client here).  I guess the guy on the phone was lost, so the guy walks around to my side of the desk and looks and my computer and says "can you pull up google maps?".  Dude!  First of all, this is my personal space and secondly, you just walking around like you own the place pisses me off.  If you had simply stayed on the other side of my desk and said, "Do you mind pulling up google maps and can I look over your shoulder?" it would have been a totally different story.

Yeah, mine is more of a B&M as well.  My cube backs up to a busy hallway area, so there are always people walking on the other side of me.  But do they have to run their hands along the length of my wall?  I get that the walls are made of fabric and it feels nice or whatever, but that is the most annoying noise.  Also, is it that hard to pay attention when you are walking?  I had someone walk straight into my wall this morning and all of my cabinets and even my monitor started shaking.  I can't even imagine people having the nerve to touch someone's belly that they don't know.  I'm not even sure I would let my own relatives do that to me.

Wow, touching the cubicle is weird... I guess I should be glad that people don't do that to mine.  Can't decide what's weirder, touching cubicle walls or a pregnant woman's belly.  Maybe it's because for some reason I'm currently repulsed by the idea of having kids (don't know where that came from in the past few months), but I can't even imagine wanting to touch a woman's belly.  I guess it would be different if the mom-to-be were a friend and said something like "You want to feel her kick?" ...but just to touch the belly seems like you're treating the woman like she's got some sort of strange appendage that isn't normal.  Seems impolite.

I just did a major friend cleanup on Facebook.  Some of you may not have made the cut, sorry.  But being chatty on a message board and being friends on FB are totally different things, and if we never talked on FB, you probably got the axe.    Sorry, Mariah. ;)  (hahahahaha, j/k)

Since the group in India still doesn't get what they're supposed to be doing, some idiot upper level manager suggested that they start having 4 AM phone calls with the group every day in addition to the ones at 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM.  Once again, I am very thankful that Bill has a wonderful paying job but this is getting ridiculous.  Someone said no so they're not going to do it.  Yet.  But I can see it being brought up again.  Next, I thought teenagers like to sleep as long as possible.  However, abou 20 of my zero period kids show up twenty minutes before class starts every morning.  I must have gotten the early riser group this year.

So I got the iPhone right?  I don't know if I really like it all that much :(  But I don't want to tell Steve that because then he'll get pissed.  I think part of the reason I don't really care about it one way or the other is that where my desk is in our office, I have to hunt and search for a signal.  So trying to check my e-mail and trying to get on the internet to check FB and stuff takes FOR.EV.ER.  And I just don't have the patience for that. I probably just need to get used to it and the way it works before I really make up my mind...

Mariah, Does your office have wifi?  Have you tried connecting through that?  We had terrible signal in NYC.  Not just in one place but in pretty much every place.

I've been on the fence about getting the iPhone for a while.  I really want to wait to see when Apple ends their agreement with AT&T whether Verizon or another service provider will also pick up the iPhone.  It'd be a much easier decision then because I really don't want to contract with AT&T.

Yeah, it has Wifi but then it would be pointless because gmail and facebook would still be blocked for me.

Julie, you may just be an awesome teacher!  :)  I used to show up before zero period to hang out in the classroom of one of the teachers that was always there early.  It started as showing up early to study on test days, but then me and a couple of friends just kept going every day because we liked hanging out with the teacher.

Mariah do you have your 3G on or off? Some places don't get good 3G reception, we as others don't get good non 3G reception.

How do I know if the 3G is on or off?
  • edited December 2011
Ok, nevermind.  I can't tell if turning the 3G off makes a difference or not...I guess I'll just watch it and see.

lol stephie...you'll LOVE this one then :pI hate calling...it's much faster to text unless you have a long story to tell or just want to chat ;)But on the other hand, if I know someone doesn't like texting or doesn't have it, I will call. Just not as often. I would probably email first LOL

Stephie, I hate talking and would much rather exchange texts.  I can still watch TV, grade papers, etc and don't have to focus as long on a text as I do during a phone call.  Of course, my dad worked for AT&T so none of us really like talking on the phone.

PS:  Alanna, thanks for that.  The older kids love stopping by to talk about things.  It's just funny to turn the corner in the morning and see 20+ kids waiting for me to open the room so they can start learning.  We've started on time every day this week.  I'm wondering how long that will last.

I would much rather text then call. I hate calling people I really dont know. I always get nervous and I have to pretty much rehearse what I'm going to say. Email or text is the way to go! lol

I hate talking on the phone and I'm not much on texting either...my phones isn't that easy to maneuver.  There's really no point in me even having a phone.  I definitely prefer email!

I don't want to stop what I'm doing at work to text "Be there at 11:00"  when I can say that in 2 seconds.

I might sound old, but it is sad that people in this generation aren't able to properly communicate because there is so much reliance on text messaging and email. It is going to make for a socially awkward future generation if it hasn't already. Learn how to pick up the phone and talk to someone. Verbal communication is never going to go away.

I agree about the verbal communication.  However, if I had to call 150 kids about canceling school for whatever reason, I would much rather text or send out a tweet (or whatever we're going to have access to).  The phone calls last year just to 13 of them took me an hour.

Emi, I totally agree.  My daughter and her friends have entire discussions over text.  And then one of them gets mad at the other, and the one they're mad at doesn't know why.  But yet they won't pick up the phone and actually talk to them.

Just because I prefer to text or email rather than talk on the phone doesn't mean I don't know how to verbally communicate and/or need to 'learn' how to do so.

If you notice, I did not single any one particular person out. I text and email. Hell, I even participate in wedding related chat rooms. However, I strongly feel that a large chunk of current and future generations are at a disadvantage because they soley rely on text. Look at Stephie's example about her daughter and friends. There is an entire article in the NY Times about how current post grads are not well equipped for job interviews because their verbal communication skills are lacking due to technology, as well as the lack of proper vocabulary, which typically comes from lack of reading.
