March 2012 Weddings

Rant: Alterations cost what?!!

My dress fits perfectly almost everywhere but needs to be hemmed and have the bustle added. I knew some of you girls said your alterations were expensive but I had no idea! I went tonight and it's going to be $250!!

I also found out today that it's going to cost $425 if we want to have speakers and microphones for our outdoor ceremony.

I am just so tired of people taking advantage of the fact that we're having a wedding and there are certain things we have to have done. In any other case, I feel like so much of this stuff be way less expensive. It's like every time I turn around we're having to pay more money and I am sick of it!

Anyway, that's it. Thanks for letting me complain, girls!

  • My alterations are $320... ouch.

Are you having a DJ? If so, maybe they can start an hour earlier and you can use their equipment. We are paying our DJ for an extra hour ($100) which is much less than the $350 we were quoted for a mic and ampliphier.

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • All I needed done to my dress is for it to be shortened by about three inches and steamed ..... $320 LATER!!!  It's crazy ... but I guess since there was quite a few layers and she just couldn't chop the bottom off - Dang it!  Not like I didn't spend enough on the dress to begin with!

I'm thinking I went into the wrong line of work - should have been a steamstress!! :)

  • I am hoping all I will need is my bustle.  The shoes I bought were specifically so I wouldn't have to have it hemmed.  They have enough heel that I will be ok.  I'm praying anyway lol.  I really need to make an appointment to have it done
  • My alterations were $250 as well.  I went with an outsider because AA wanted me to pay $300 for a petite dress and another $200 to have it hemmed since petite is still too long.  So I went with the regular hem and the private salon alterations.

  • I feel ya, my alterations cost about 225 for my hem, bustle, and for a dart at the bust to pull it in so I'm not all out there :)
  • My fitting is Sunday and I was originally quoted $300 for hem, bustle, and slight strap alterations...That's almost half what the dress cost to begin with!  I'm hoping she changes her mind when she actually gets me all pinned up *fingers crossed*

  • I'm so sorry!! And we know how everything in Dallas is expensive to alter. Mine would have been expensive too, but fortunately my mom is doing it all. The seamstress at DB came out and told her what to do and where since it's got layered lace and fabric and needs to be taken up almost a foot without ruining the lace at the bottom. The dress was only $250 (yay for 75% off!) so I def don't want to pay that for alterations.

<div>That's awesome!! My dress was like $800 but still, we're talking more than 25% of the total cost for a few small alterations. Crazy. • Yeah, I ran into this for wedding #1.  My $149 sewing machine was the BEST INVESTMENT EVER!  Yup, I hemmed my own dress.  I also brought the skirt in (it was a 2 piece) about a half inch.  I'm not sure what these seamstresses at these dress stores are doing that cost so darn much, but you really couldn't tell I had hemmed it myself!

This time around I managed to find a dress that was the PERFECT length.  Probably because it was pre-owned.  I'm pretty sure dress shops add so much extra length just so you have to pay to have it hemmed.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

  • Where did you go?

To be honest that seems high to me because my dress has a 10ft train and to get it bustled, dress taken in, and a yellow flower color corrected was 325. That seems really high to me for you.

My alterations were also $300...just for a hem, bustle, and hem the cap sleeve shoulders in a little to make it more a sleeveless look. Such a bummer.

I also bought a reception dress off the rack at the bridal shop (a sample) for $100 but it was about 2 sizes too big so they have to totally alter it to my body, hem it, and add cups since it is strapless. They are charging me $250 for that...

So I totally feel your pain. I do feel like everyone loves to quote you a number and then when it's all said and done it ends up being about $100 more for EVERYTHING! That stuff adds up quick!

  • I got a dress that fit me perfect. I for it last march, it was full price though. I loved it. Its perfect length and tie up. When i went to do a fitting guess what it doesn't fit. I need as smaller size dress. I've lost that much weight. Luckily they ordered me the same dress a size smaller and they are trading it out. So glad I didn't get the bustle on the dress yet.

  • OMG I think I had the most expensive alterations. Mine were $485!!! All I had done was the bustle, the hem, and changed the top of my dress to sweetheart. It still would have been expensive even if I didn't add the sweetheart top, alterations would have been $400! :(

  • You girls are making me nervous.  I am going in for my first fitting on Saturday.  I was hoping to change my ziper back to a corset.  There is no train and nothing to be hemme, so I was hoping it wouldn't be too bad.  But if you girls are talking hems and bustles to be that high, I might end up cancling changing my dress to a corset!!!  :(
