Antibiotics Fail

I just heard on the local news that a grocery chain is offering 10 common antibiotics for free "because cold and flu season is coming up." Antibiotics FAIL.

Re: Antibiotics Fail

  • Ummm there isn't any antibiotics for the cold and flu, right?
    image
  • WTF, seriously?  Hopefully only with a prescription.  You can't just run around handing out antibiotics willy-nilly.
    image
  • Yeah, the cold and flu are viruses. Hello, MRSA!

  • Oh, my FI is going to love that one.

  • haha, I didn't even think about that.  Duh.  I guess you could get a sinus infection with your cold/flu...?

  • I think the original poster was alluding to the fact that antibiotics dont treat the cold or flu. The common cold and flu are caused by viruses, therefore would be treated with anti-virals. Antibiotics cure bacterial infections. Some newsreporters are such idiots.

  • A lot of people think the flu and the cold can be cured with antibiotics and OTC meds. I wonder if they could get in trouble for false advertisment?

  • its probably for hypochondriacs like myself.

  • OMG what idiots. I just don't know what else to say to that.
  • Make way for ever more super bugs!
  • That's like handing out Plan B to prevent the spread of herpes.

  • Maybe they want people to take it so they don't get a bacterial infection along with the flu or cold?  Taht would be my first thought. But yes, people are dumb and think antibiotics are the cure all in medicine.  Gotta love all the superbugs it's slowly creating.
  • Just a side note: Although the media is pushing the "superbug" title, MRSA can be killed quite easily.  The problem is that hospitals don't take the time to properly identify Staph. sp bacteria previous to treating them.  Incorrect id can lead to coag-neg bacteria being treated with what should be used for coag-pos bacteria.  This feeds it instead of weakening it.
  • Antibiotics aren't to be used as prophylaxis.  If you get a sinus infection witha  cold or flu THEN you get treated.Same as saying hey I think I'll take AZT in case I get AIDS.
  • Well, I know that MRSA can still be killed. I don't know if I would necessarily say "easily" simply based on the cases I've seen. We're also getting into VRSA.

  • MRSA is just one of many "superbugs".    We have been dealing with these things for as long as I can rememeber.Human kind is going to kill itself off.  I wonder how many people have antibacterial soaps, dish soaps, cleaners etc in their houses?  We are making it so that our natural immune system is not going to be able to fight off anything.
  • I've decided I have a superhuman immune system. I get about 1 cold a year, and other than that I never ever get sick. Maybe it's because I work in schools and usually forget my sanitizer at home?  And I hate cleaning in general?  Can there really be a positive outcome from that?

  • tlv - Nice. I'll tell FI that I'm not cleaning the house because I'm building my immune system. In general, I don't get sick. I haven't had a cold, flu, or infection in 5 years. I really do believe it has something to do with the lack of antibacterial products I have, as well as doing semi stupid things like picking food up off the floor and eating it. Also, working in health care, my immune system has just gotten used to that kind of assault.

  • I'm the same way tlv.  I don't use anything antibiotic, people would freak out that I don't usually wash my hands before making dinner, I don't use bleach unless necessary, and the house is definately not clean-room clean.  I rarely get sick, maybe a sniffle here or there, but that's it.  Last time I was really sick was bronchitis 4 years ago.
  • "Human kind is going to kill itself off. I wonder how many people have antibacterial soaps, dish soaps, cleaners etc in their houses? We are making it so that our natural immune system is not going to be able to fight off anything"  I agree with you 100% Colleen!  Plus, the over-precription of antibiotics for things that our bodies can naturally fight off if left to their own accord.
  • Walmart and Meijer in Michigan already do but for anything that needs antibiotics and I believe you still have to have a prescription.
  • A lot of pharmacies do this. It's some poorly worded advertisting though. However, you still need a prescription. It's not like you can just walk up and get a supply of amoxicillin. But, it's great for parents. Lots of kids get more susceptible to ear infections (caused by bacteria) when they have a cold.
  • When I have a spawn, I'm going to go rub their faces in pollen and have a dog and cat sleep in their bedrooms. The number of allergies people have these days is ridiculous and a man-made phenomenon. I'm only half kidding about doing that to my kids.

  • I thought allergies get worse with exposure.  Is that not true?

  • bel I agree about allergies (not all allergies clearly) but I'm always afraid to say that out loud.

  • tlv - I'm just like you.  Our house is not white glove clean and we have no antibacteria products.   I'm rarely sick.  My only doctor office visits are stupid injury stuff bacause I'm clutsy.  I can't even remember the last time I even had a fever.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I think it's awesoem that you can get antibiotics for free, don't get me wrong. It's the over prescribing of them that gets me.  Then don't forget about the people that don't take all of their prescription.
