Re: parents together vs. split up

  • My parents divorced when I was about 3 (about 26 years ago) and had only been married a few years.  My mom has been married to my stepfather for 21 years and my dad has never remarried. His parents have been together for somewhere around 40 years.
  • Brie- thats sad :(

  • Both still together, both been together more than 40 years. A few years ago a friend asked if my dad was mum's 2nd husband.  When I said no, he (laughing) said "then isn't it about time they stopped acting like newlyweds?"
  • She always says, "I found the love of my life already--no need to look for another one."  I understand how she feels, I guess, but for selfish reasons I wish she'd date again.  She focuses all her energy on me and my sister, but we're both grown and have our own lives so it's a little awkward sometimes.  She's not thrilled that I'm getting married--she loves FI but sees him as stealing me away from her.  It's a lot of pressure.  A lot of the time I feel like her happiness is contingent on how much time I spend with her and not much else.  I just want her to be happy all the time!

  • Honestly I'd be happy if my mom were dating.  She was genuinely unhappy with my dad, and he's been dead for 13 years, and she still loves him.  She has had a few boyfriends, and they were divorced first, so it's not really like Brie's situation, but my advice is to be happy that your parents are moving on with their lives and trying to be happy now where they weren't before.  At least if they behave like adults around each other.

  • NoNoMy mom and bio dad were together for 14 years.  My mom and stepdad have been married for 18 years.  I'm not sure how long FI's parents were together...14 years, maybe?  Both his parents have been remarried, his dad multiple times.
  • Both father's have passed away...but both sets of parents were split before the deaths. Mine we're together for 19 years...I'm not sure about FI's.

  • 1.  My parents are together still and have been married for 34 years.  They got married when they were 17 and 19.2.  FI's divorced when he was 19.  They were married for 24 years I believe.  His mother did not remarry but his father has been remarried for 15 years.
  • Both sets of parents are still together. Mine have been married 47 years and his have been married 46 years. His parents were high school sweethearts and married as soon as his father graduated college (his mother came from a time and place where women didn't necessarily go to college). My parents met after college and married when my mom was 22 and dad was 25. That seems incredibly young now, but wasn't unusual when they were that age.
  • My parents are still together.  They've been married for 27 years. I'm not sure how long his parents were together.  They divorced when he was little, but just a few years ago found out the lawyer didn't file the paperwork with the state so they are still technically married.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • Both are still together. Mine - almost 26 yearsHis - almost 27 years
  • His parents are celebrating their 25th anniversary this November. My parents were married for 21 years in May.I'm the only one of my peers to have been married in the past few years to have that happen, though. It seems like it's almost more common now for one or both sets of parents to be split up.
