I like this dress (hopefully the picture works)[IMG]http://i25.tinypic.com/2qdr53d.jpg[/IMG]My plan for the dress is as follows :Have the dress cut to tea length. Have the tailor use the extra fabric to add a little coverage near the top of the shoulders to cover bra straps (wearing a bra is a must) & use the fabric to add 3/4 sleeves (I hate my chubby arms + wedding is mid November)Also have the tailor add some red crinoline under the skirt to add volume and a bit of color.Can you picture it? I'm kind of going for a 1950's party dress feel.Opinions. Thanks

I just think it sounds terrible. Sorry. NMS at all, and it just sounds butt ugly in my head.There are some great dress designers with short dresses out there. A talented seamstress should be able to help you with sleeves or general arm coverage.

What you're describing sounds like something you'd be able to get a lot cheaper somewhere where it's not being sold as a wedding dress. Honestly, you're changing the whole thing, have you really had that much issue finding something more similar to what you want?

If I'm picturing the same thing as you I think it would look very cute and pretty, but I really think it would be hard to do it from that dress. You usually can't just add fabric to the top and bottom of the sleeves and have it look like a normal v neck with 3/4 length sleeves. I mean a good seamstress could do it but chances are it still wouldn't look exactly how you picture it. It would probably be easier to find a different dress or have one made, IMO.

I'm feeling it... I am channeling Audrey Hepburn... I don't know what your body-type is, but I found as a bigger busted girl that this type of asymmetrical rouching was super flattering. I prob wouldn't be able to pull off the deep V though...

I'm considering this as an option because the dress is only $199 and it can be delivered within a week. Our wedding is November 14th, so time is a bit tight (my fault, I know).I figure alterations shouldn't be more than $150

I think I can visualize what you're going for, but why not just find the dress you want instead of reinventing this one? There are tons of tea-length dresses out there, even BM ones that you might be able to get in white. Or just check out vintage and vintage-inspired dresses. There are lots of them out there!

I take that back... I do like the idea, not so sure about the 3/4 length sleeves. I don't think even a good seamstress could make it look quite right. What about a cute wrap or bolero?

Also, wait, your wedding is two months and you want to do this? No way could you order a dress and have it changed that extensively in that time frame.

Doing that many alterations will cost more than $150, even in most small towns.

Have you looked at http://unique-vintage.com/ ? They have some dresses that are similar to what you are describing, already made. I really doubt you could get all that done for $150. I've heard of places charging up to $75 for the hem alone. Anyway, if you're willing to spend $350+ on the dress plus alterations, why not just buy a $350 dress that's what you actually want?

Also, I'm very large chested so no matter what dress I buy it will have to be drastically altered because my top is usually 3-4 sizes bigger than my bottom

I paid that much just to have my dress hemmed and a simple bustle put in. Have you actually gotten a quote for these alterations?I can picture it and it sounds cute, but it sounds like more trouble than it's worth, especially if you're on a tight timeline. Can you get something off the rack?

MissSarah ... I adore that dress, however, I'd never be able to squeeze into it. I've already looked into vintage dresses and I just can't find anything in my size.I don't want to pay big bucks for a dress that will wind up having several alterations.

I don't know about that, I am a size 6-8 on the bottom and a 14 on top, and I actually got by with very few alterations ($160 total)...

Brie -- no dress at all yet.I was trying to lose as much weight as possible before I try anything on. I managed to lose 25 pounds, but still nothing seems to fit right. I'm pretty desperate at this point, hence the cheap dress with massive alterations

I think that dress would be nice if you had it hemmed to tea length. Is your chest too big for a longline bra, or a corset-type strapless? Then you could just get a bolero or some type of wrap. It would be much cheaper, easier, and faster, and you still get the look you want.

This is going to sound really lame, but I would suggest checking out websites for modest wedding dresses. They have some really cute ones with sleeves, like honestly cute, and they're generally not that expensive. Laugh away, but several of them on latterdaybride.com would be even cuter cut off to tea length. Good luck!

ringpop -- alterations around here don't seem to be too expensive. A friend from work recently got married. she had pretty extensive alterations done for $125

Seriously, the asymmetrical waistline is fab, as is a modified sweetheart neckline (not a full-out sweetheart unless you want to flash everyone). It sounds like we have very similar body types... I also was amazed how well a longline bra worked for me. I am a 34E and do not feel at all unsupported or self-conscious in a strapless gown.

I think you should keep looking. I know what you're describing and think it could be really cute, but I don't think it will work with this dress. There's a really good online store that might have what you're after... if only I could recall the name! I'll google and see if I can find it.
