What did you do (or will do) as far as name changes. Change only last name? Hyphenate? Change middle name to maiden name and change last name? or keep it all the same?

I'm changing to his.  My current last name is my old married name so it has to go.  But I would change it to his anyway.

Change last name to his. Although I will miss my last name, it has no special meaning in our family and I have two brothers who will carry it on anyways. And it won't work as my middle name so i'm not changing it.

Just changing my last name to his last name. I am more attached to my middle name than my current last name.
  • edited December 2011
I'll either be taking his last name or he'll be taking mine.  He's not very attached to his last name and has always wanted to change it anyways.

Not changing my name.  I'm Chinese and it's not really in my cultural tradition to take the husband's last name.  Our kids will have his last name but I'll still be me.

Changed it.  I thought about hyphenating, by my first name is 9 letters long, my maiden name is 8 letters long, and my husband's name is 6 letters, so that would be a really long name!  I felt a little weird at first since my new last name is a very common Vietnamese name, and obviously I'm not Vietnamese, but in the end it was just easier if I changed it to his.  Now I just have to get used to people butchering my name  :)

Changing completely. I am going shorter! From 7 to 4 :D I have always known I was going to change it. I will be going shorter and I will also have a famous name of the you know who cook just spelled different and yes people will butcher it lolThere are a TON of boys to carry on my family's last name so no worries about that.

I am changing my name to his! That's one of the best parts to me!

I'll be changing to his last name.  I'll drop back to the middle of the alphabet, but it'll be shorter - 10 down to 4.

I will eventually be changing.  Due to some state teaching requirements over the summer, I couldn't have changed it until a few weeks ago.  I'll be changing it next summer.I have some reservations about changing mine and it has nothing to do with how I feel about him or anything else.  I have been "Mc" where I teach since I started teaching twelve years ago.  I hate to lose my nickname.  However, I will have a new nickname next school year because the kids in one of my classes refer to Bill as "Mr. Rankenstein".  I will be Mrs. Rankenstein.

To whoever mentioned dropping to the middle of the alphabet, I'm going from A to Y, lol.

I'm in the process of changing my last name to his. I'm also changing my middle name to my maiden last name. My dad's side of the family ends with me, so it's a little sentimental. Plus, I'm more attached to my last name than middle. :) I'm excited to switch to his last name!

Changing my middle name to my maiden name and taking his last name. It makes it easier at the bank, at least it did when I worked there, if people had a check made payable to the maiden name and it was on their driver's license as the middle name. Plus my dad had two girls and all he only has sisters so I want to keep it.

I will be adding his last name to my name. I really love my middle and last name but wanted to take his also so it will be my first middle maiden his last. My maiden name will become like another middle name and I will just use my first name and his last for daily things.

lyndie_beth, good point about making it easier bank wise.  I was going to change my middle to my maiden name but I have an odd, fairly long last name now so I was worried it'd look all funny.  But, seeing as others have done it I think I'm going for it.

Sigh. I still don't know, I'm very torn about this issue. I like my name just fine the way it is, but when we have kids I'd like for our family to all share a name. But I know that's not really necessary, lots of families have different names. I just don't know. I need to ask FI what he thinks, if he feels strongly one way or the other, that might help me make my decision.

Bobbys - I was going to do that, I thought it was perfect until someone told me that the social security office (or something government-related) gets in a real twist about having four names.

I think I'll change my middle to my maiden and take his.   I used to totally want to get rid of my last name but it's kinda sentimental now, plus like Lyndie said it will be easier at the bank, etc.   I'd hyphenate but then my last name would be 17 letters long. Ha, no thanks.

I didn't think this would be an issue for me, but it is. I always intended to take his last name, but I still haven't changed it. I don't want to lose my last name or my middle name, but I want to take his name. I don't know what I'm going to do. I guess I could hyphenate.
  • edited December 2011
My last name is a girl's first name, so I technically could really easily switch my maiden name to my middle name.I wont though--people have switched my first and last names up as long as I can remember, and I cannot wait to go to something easier!

I just added his last name on the end so my name is now Aimee middlename maidenname marriedname.

Fi is taking mine. He is not attached to his last name, it was sisters father's last name. I couldn't be happier that he is taking mine.
  • edited December 2011
I will either take his last name or tack it on to the end of my maiden name, since I don't want to lose my middle name... though probably just change to his. If it wouldn't break his grandparents' hearts he said he would change to mine in a heart beat, move up from W-C, and have a name that doesn't get butchered all the time, but I don't mind taking his.

CrombieFaye - have you faced any problems doing that? That's what I want to do, but I've heard it can be a hassle with paperwork and whatnot.
  • edited December 2011
For work purposes I was originally going to hyphenate, but J's last name is 11 letters long (11 letters and only 2 vowels, btw). I ended up keeping my first and middle the same and taking his last name. And for anyone that knows what it is, well you all better feel sorry for me. :) I've spent the last 9 months having to pronounce my name for people...And my poor Cuban family still cant say it correctly, not even my dad. Oh well, I like having his name.
  • edited December 2011
I'm taking his name for sure. :) I've been practicing signing it. Haha!
