we used the Venue's direction card and Hotels "Stay w/ us" card - that had their address and website on it - we put these 2 cards in the invites. For our OOT bags, we put shuttle info and also put driving directions to our venu and back from the hotel for anyone that didnt want to take the shuttle. We just attached this to the welcome letter we made for them.bing.com gives awesome directions...better than mapquest
Not married, but I did them and so far everyone that called about the invite totally ignored them. I did an insert that we typed up with directions to hotel, ceremony and reception.
I included the ones the Atrium gave me as well. I did diretions to the church...I copied them from the church web site. I DID NOT do directions from the church to the Atrium and everyone arrived fine. Well...minus the one family that went to Mayfair Farms!
Did them, proofed them, had others look through them, and of course as soon as they were sent out, I noticed not one, but 2 mistakes. I was livid. grrrrrrr...
I'm asking b/c I'm not doing it...I already wrote mine. I've just heard girls say that guests totally ignored them or kept calling for directions, so I was curious if/how that differed for people who didn't include directions at all.
I'd be curious to hear other states' responses to this question, in reference to what Erika said. From my understanding, providing all these accommodations for your guests (shuttle, OOT bags, direction cards, etc.) seems to be just a NYC metro thing. I don't think it's ever a bad thing to do something nice for your guests, but I rememebr a poll here a while back where a few people said they consider it "rude" not to provide any kind of shuttle service for your guests. Before the Knot and even after I started chatting here, I've never seen a real-life wedding that did that (including both NJ and out-of-state weddings). And only one wedding did an OOT bag.
We did-- felt it was important because the church and the reception were on windy country roads, half of the guests were from very congested areas of Long Island and were not used to those kinds of roads, and mapquest was inaccurate regarding the location of the church and reception location. We also had VERY detailed maps and directions in our OOT bags. Many of the guests used mapquest or GPS anyway, and ended up lost because they turned left onto windy country road instead of right onto windy country road to get to the church. They then went miles out of their way because there was no gas station or such to stop at to ask. So we had a good number of people trickle in late to the church (and less late to the reception-- it was tricky too because the entrance is pretty hidden, but easier to figure out if you had gone too far). So I really don't know how I feel about whether they're helpful. I would say not necessary because many will ignore them anyway?
I did one. Very clearly explained how to get from A to B from B to C and from C to A. SO many people still asked me. It was very annoying. However, you still need one, bc think of all the old people who still used them vs the internet. My dad uses them, for example!
