Broom.....

I wanted to jump the broom after we are officially husband and wife. Did any of you ladies do this old fashion tradition in your wedding? If so, who handled the broom? Did someone walk it down the aisle (like one of the ushers or did someone outside the W/P)? TIA

We are doing this in our wedding ceremony as well. We are having my MOH nephew walk the broom down the aisle. I don't even know what to name his position in the WP to be honest. Now you got me thinking.... I think that if you want to designated someone specifically or have one of the ushers do it, then it is fine either way. I have seen it done both ways and it turned out beautifully. HTH

Cool - I am having my FI brother who will be 4yrs old do it and I do not know what to title it as in the progam either.. LMOLI was just going to call it: broombearer .. kinda like ringbearer.... He will walk b4 the R/B and F/G.

At least you kind of had something in mind what to title his position I had no clue at all. I have a planner and I think she said something about broom bearer or something like that. Like my niece who will be the herald (you know the one who says, the bride is coming?), I was going to call her something else until my planner told me what the title was.

Firstlady 09 girl we got too much in common and I am loving it!I am also having my FI nephew say "the bride is coming the bride is coming". I had no clue of what to call him in the program but - bride announcer .. is that ghetto? loli did not know what to call that position either. Will your neice have a bell to ring?

lol girl its a shame ain't it. But my niece will be ringing a bell. She is perfect for it too. That lil girl is funny as heck. lol @ you calling the baby the bell ringer lol. Don't do that. I was about to make that dreadful mistake on my program lol. At least we figured out together what we should call these people without the guest looking at the program going, they ghetto for that one.

If you jump the broom, make sure you do it at the appropriate time....before you are pronounced husband and wife. The broom was jumped before the pronouncement b/c blacks could not get married, exchange rings, sign a marriage certificate...so, right before the minister said they were married, they jumped into matrimony, making their union acknowledged in their community and in the eyes of God.

Oh, I forgot, we are not jumping the broom. We have too many rituals already in the ceremony.

My girlfriend and her husband jumped the broom and it was not brought in by anyone.  They had it on the front pew when the ceremony started.  When it was time for them to leave, the best man retrieved it and put it in place.  I made one for my wedding but since we ended up in Jamaica for the wedding we didn't use it.  I'm not sure what we would have done. Good luck!

That was on point info @ Lovie. I read that too when I was looking at the symbolism of this ritual.

Hi there ~ we just got married on 9/19/09 - This is how we incorporated the broom into our ceremony. My fI/now hsuband :) carried the broom down the aisle and during the ceremony is father held it for us. After we said our vows the weddnig commissioner talked about what jumping the broom means to Hasani & I - we also included a few words in the program so guests would understand why we jumped! After we were pronoucned husband asn wife - My husband placed the broom in front of us and we jumped! It was a great momment.... For us jumping the broom symbolized us sweeping our past life as single people and jumping into our new life together as man and wife and as a fimaly.......
