Dog food?

Re: Dog food?

  • No one is flaming for feeding a non-premium brand. Most of the psa's regarding dog food is just for those who may not realize the ingredients. If it's all you can afford that's ok, its not hurting them.
  • Sorry I know its a late response but.. My pom was on Natura and he kept throwing it up, whenever we would switch (transition I should say, it took a month) he would be fine for a little while and then start throwing it up again or not even touch his food. So now hes on Innova Red Meat and he gobbles the stuff up! Hes been on it for 6 months now and hasn't had any problems so Innova gets a thumbs up from me. Plus all of the ingredients that are listed, I can actually pronounce and know what it is!

  • Brodie gets California Natural. His vet suggested it b/c it's specifically targeted towards dogs w/allergies and sensitive stomachs. It has minimal ingredients and no fillers. It seems to be a pretty decent food for him.

  • Is that dog food analysis not working for anyone else? I even googled it thinking I got the site wrong or something, but it won't work no matter how I try to get to it.

  • dogfoodanalysis.com hasn't been working super great lately.Another good site that ranks dog foods as well as cat foods is petfoodratings.net
  • I am sorry if my post made it seem that if you feed chain store dog food you are a bad doggy mommmy...that is NOT what my intention was...of course there are times when I can't afford the "ideal" food for my dogs and I pick up a bag of whatever I can afford. I was just trying to give the OP some guidance and some info that was helpful to me when I heard about it. I know that you are all very good pet mommies or you wouldn't have even bothered to post on here!
  • Not a dog owner but I do have three cats, I've gone through the pet food dance several times.  Nutro foods are awesome but my cats wouldn't eat them.  They LOVE Halo though, it's a really good middle of the road food I think.  Not as expensive as some of the other ones but still really great ingredients (no by-products).
  • Mryan- actually, depending on the breed of the dog, some large breeds need puppy food a lot longer.  Something like a great dane should prob eat it until 18 months or so, a lab close to a year.  HTH!
  • I'm coming in late here... my pup eats Eagle Pack Holistic, it is moderately priced and the ingredients are good. A good rule when you're shopping for dog food is to avoid grains, corn, and meat by-products. You may spend a bit more on food, but it will last longer because your dog won't need to eat as much of it to get his/her nutrients. AND more nutrient rich foods = less dog crap in the yard, which is worth the extra money right there!
  • And, by the way, there is a lot of serious misinformation here.  Please do your research before believing a lot of this misguided (although I am sure not intentionally so) advice.  There are not euthanized animals in any AAFCO approved pet foods, I promise.
  • Right now I feed my sheltie Wellness Puppy. When she turns one I'm switching her to Wellness CORE, which is really really good for your dog.My cats are on Wellness indoor formula, but I don't like the skin reaction they are getting, so they are going to go back on what my breeder fed them, Royal Canin. Petco sells Wellness, so I wouldn't say anything a chain sells is bad... but most of it is. Our dog was fed purina or something like that her whole life. She has non cancerous bubbles all over her body. Her skin is bad, her coat is bad, her nails grow all funny.Feeding your dog something like purina won't kill her, but it won't keep her healthy. It would be like you eating MacDonald every day, or something like it. It's food, it will fill you, but it's not giving you the vitamins and nutrients that you need...
  • Here's the definition of chicken and poultry-by-product for those of you who didn't already know:"Poultry by-product meal is a high-protein commodity used as a major component in some pet foods. It is made from grinding clean, rendered parts of poultry carcasses and can contain bones, offal and undeveloped eggs, but only contains feathers that are unavoidable in the processing of the poultry parts. Poultry by-product meal quality and composition can change from one batch to another.Chicken by-product meal, like poultry by-product, is made of "dry, ground, rendered clean parts of the chicken carcass" according to AAFCO and may contain the same ingredients as poultry-by product. Chicken by-product can vary in quality from batch to batch. Chicken by-product costs less than chicken muscle meat and lacks the digestibility of chicken muscle meat." (Offal, btw, is "is a culinary term used to refer to the entrails and internal organs of a butchered animal. The word does not refer to a particular list of organs, but includes most internal organs other than muscles or bones.")From the
  • onefish, I think maybe the euthanasia comment came from the rendering part?"Rendering is a process that converts waste animal tissue into stable, value-added materials. Rendering can refer to any processing of animal byproducts into more useful materials, or more narrowly to the rendering of whole animal fatty tissue into purified fats like lard or tallow. Rendering can be carried out on an industrial, farm, or kitchen scale. The majority of tissue processed comes from slaughterhouses but also includes restaurant grease and butcher shop trimmings, expired meat from grocery stores, the carcasses of euthanized and dead animals from animal shelters, zoos and veterinarians. This material can include the fatty tissue, bones, and offal, as well as entire carcasses of animals condemned at slaughterhouses, and those that have died on farms (deadstock), in transit, etc. The most common animal sources are beef, pork, sheep, and poultry."
  • I think I will not be using any chicken by-product now :)
