Re: PSA

  • Thank you, vally.  This illustrates my point perfectly.  I shall share it with the masses.

  • P2, I think we are grammar soulmates.  How about to/too, and the fact that misspell is one of the most frequently misspelled words?
  • So says the woman who cannot spell usernames correctly.
  • Yup. A math teacher.I pre-spell check everything I write on the board before class so I do not make mistakes. Students do not have to read any of my errors. I work on it.I think I'm a better teacher because I have gone through learning disabilities. I am better, IMO, at working with kids who have issues themselves.
  • my computer always underlines definitely as a spelling imperfection.  always always always doesn't matter how i spell it.  not sure why it does. not my computer at work.  my macbook at home.

  • Irish, I had a teacher who was dyslexic, she was the best teacher I ever had. The worst teachers I had?  The really really smart ones.  They didn't teach, they told you things and expected you to understand what they were talking about.

  • One that is common on the Knot-  isle and aisle. When you get married you walk down the aisle, unless you get married on an island, then your aisle is on the isle.
  • I don't doubt that those who have disabilities can be better teachers. I do think that teachers should be able to spell correctly. No matter what subject. I have a friend in her last year of education to be a teacher, who can NOT spell. She posts crap on her Fbook all day long, and 100s of people comment on her spelling abilities (or lack thereof). If I had kids in her classes and saw her fbook page, I'd take them out of her class, fast.

  • So do you think I should quit since i have spelling issues? Even though my kids never witness the spelling errors?I think there is a difference between having spelling issues, and having spelling issues in class. (and for the record, I'm not teaching this year. I'm back getting another masters...but I will be back in the classroom soon)
  • Some people just can't spell though Pumpkin.  I have a few words I have problems with and always forget.  I just learned how to spell cemetery last week!In some ways it is a disability.  I don't really understand how people cannot spell because it comes quite naturally to me.  I always did well on spelling tests in school.  But, yeah some people just can't do it. It is annoying I give you that!  It truly is.  But, I think it's great that Irish spell checks before she writes stuff on the board.  That's a good teacher.

  • Yes Irish, I completely meant quit your job. No, I think you're doing the right thing. I somehow think that not everyone would be as careful about it as you are. I understand some people can't spell. I'm just being unreasonable, I know that.

  • I think you're so cute."I'm being unreasonable, I know that."  Haha.

  • I know you didn't mean that. I was being light hearted about it. I'm not offended/upset by this convo at all. Just pointing out the other side.I, too though, am annoyed by those who don't even try. BUT some try really hard and just can't get it.
  • I think I'm so unreasonable about it because it irritates me so much. BTW - this friend of mine, she's going to end up teaching ELA, well, it's her preferred major. Early/Middle years specialty. She'll be teaching spelling. THis is also the same person who says things like, "I couldn't be matter". Or, "I should of done....". It's not only spelling, it's a matter of using the incorrect word...how are her students going to turn out?I didn't mean to offend you, sorry if I did.

  • You didn't offend me at all.Yeah, I think its ridiculous that she would teach spelling. That would be like someone who can't add teaching math! Bad idea.
  • good grief, sarah. Usernames are not words. I do my best with usernames. For someone who so easily notices spelling errors in other people's posts, your powers of observation seem a bit lacking at times. Look carefully.
  • I would also like to educate people on the difference between stationary and stationery.  I can't tell you how many times I've opened up a wedding catalog prompting me to order some brand spanking new stationary.
