Bored? Help pick my dog!

Since I got the job (yay!) we are going to get a dog!  We are going to the shelter tomorrow to do a meet and greet and hopefully find a dog to take home with us next week.  We want to come in with a few suggestions from their website because they have lots and lots of dogs.  Here are our criteria:-good with cats (we have two)-per our lease, we can't have a "violent breed" which they classify as a pit bull, a rottweiler, or a boxer-approximately medium-sized--we don't have TONS of room in our 2 bedroom townhome, and we're not big fans of small, yappy dogs-can go running with meSo far our favorite is Keith Urban!  Here is the link to the shelter:http://tinyurl.com/83w74aAnnnd...go!

• How often could you exercise it?

• Daily.  Part of the reason we want a dog is for safety when I'm running on country roads by myself in the morning or the evening. We don't have a fenced-in yard though.

• Wow, so many dogs! I'll take a look. Our apartment complex has the "violent" breeds rule too, but they also include German Shepherds and Doberman Pinschers.

• Omg there are WAY too many cute ones :)May I suggest going and meeting a few? We were totally set on getting a beagle and then we met spike and couldn't go back. Some times you just click.
• I really like Svetlana---her face looks like she is pleading for a home!!!

• We would also walk the dog in the evening, but we want one that likes to run specifically.

• I love Michelle - but I have a veeeeeery soft spot for any hound.  My beagle is 32 pounds and classified as "medium" sized and has a great bark for our apartment.  (I wanted a dog with good bark so people wouldn't be interested in entering.  If they saw Cooper, he'd lick them to death and game over.  I'd prefer they use their imagination when he barks).
• Henson is cute! He's in the first row. He likes to run/jog. :) It doesn't say anything about cats. My parents' neighbors have 2 Australian Shepherds and they are great dogs.

• Yeah, meaghan, that's how we got both of our cats!  We want to at least go in with a few names since they have so many, but are obviously open to love at first sight type situations. They are all adorable.  We are such suckers for doggies.

• I would suggest waiting to get the the shelter. Usually, animals pick you. That being said, I would stay away from the australian cattle dogs. They are a great breed, but are VERY high energy, and usually need "jobs" to feel content.
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

• We have a husky/shepard/lab mix so I love Keith Urban though I also like Hensen and Mandi.
• Just an FYI as Keith Urban is a Husky mix. Majority of Huskies are quick to lick and love people they meet. Also, they love to "talk".

• Awww, Michelle is so cute!  We do want an older dog though--preferably 1-4 years old--since we know puppies get snatched up so quickly from shelters.Henson is adorable too!  This is going to be hard.

• Oh......... I shouldn't have looked.................Mandi, Lilly, Frank, Panda...... and they have two of my Maggies (they just don't look like her, which is typical)! It kills me there are so many of them. I'm close to tears.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
• They are all so cute. It'd be so hard for me to choose just one. :( This is how I ended up with 3 cats! Panda is adorable (7th row) and active. Lily, Mandi (8th row) Dingo (9th row) Star (25th row) I tend to lean more toward female dogs. Do you have a preference?
image
• We don't have a preference as far as gender.  We have one girl cat and one boy cat, so we're an even split right now!I've heard that about cattle dogs too, Tide.  There are a lot of farms out here, so I'm sure they'd be happier in that kind of setting.

• I agree with the dogs picking you. When I got Maggie, I went fully intending to get an older dog. No puppy housebreaking crap for me.I found an older dog I liked; she reminded me of a dog my family had. I wandered around the shelter, looking at all of them - who can help but pet all the animals? Remember the Pokey Little Puppy Golden Book? Well, there was this tiny little puppy, yapping in her cage for attention. So, I stooped down to pet her for a minute, then walked back to the one I was going to get. She cried. CRIED. HOWLED and CRIED. I walked back to her, and asked about her. She'd been dumped off in the middle of the night; they estimated her at 6 weeks old. I said, "I'll take her." She was already spoken for, but the man and his son had gone home to get wife's approval and they were due back at 3. If they weren't there at 3, she was mine. I came back at 2:55, and at 3:10, we were in my car, going home. She's sleeping on her couch, 14 years later, with her snoopy dog. Damn right she chose me.The Catahoula Leopard dog is what she is - they are similar to aussies and border collies but, she's adapted to the lazy life.

• It does make me so sad to see all of those dogs without homes. When DH and I are ready to get a dog, we are definitely adopting one.

• Wow, there are so many dogs on there, it's so sad. Labrador Retreviers will be really good with running, my lab can go and go and go. But a lot of people don't know what they are getting into when they get them, so they end up at the shelter, they tend to be really hyper unless exercised every day(something we fail at) but right now she's laying on the couch next to me. Purdita looks just like my Dawn.Anyway, I would go with a generally younger dog, I like Mandi and Lily. Easy to train and start off right, good size when they are full grown and will be pretty active with the collie in them.Older dogs are going to tend to be less active, depending on the breed and tend to be harder to train since they are very ingrained in their ways, but you can teach an old dog some new tricks. I wouldn't go over 5 years of age, although my Pomeranian does love to run with me and he's 6 years old today(Happy birthday Malcolm!).HTH! Congrats on the job!

• How big do you consider medium?  Huskies and shepherds can get to be like 60+ lbs.  I like Dara, she'll be about the same size as a shepherd.  They're very smart though.  Others:Salvador, Snickers (I think she'll be cuter in person, they're pretty dogs), Santa and Lisbeth

• aw they are all so sweet. I think by photo, I'd go with: RoscoeJackMandie Tobie Sprinkles Stewie Fritz
• I think you will know when you see him/her BUT I also love Keith Urban. We have a husky/shepard mix as well. She's VERY smart but very stubborn, which is consistent with the breed. The only thing is that some husky mixes are not great with cats. Ours is (we have 4!), but do they test them? I would also suggest having a "cat room" at first where the cats can escape to but the dog can't get to. This will greatly help. Oh, another warning about husky/shepards, they need a ton of exercise. But again, we love ours!
• Aww, missy, that is so sweet! We have a pretty lax definition of medium.  Basically, this means no Great Danes, Great Pyrenees, or Saint Bernards...nothing too huge, generally, but large is fine.

• Oh ok :)  I'm sad your lease won't allow pits, they're my favorite (and the best) :) Since size isn't an issue, I vote for a german shep mix... esp if you want actual protection while running instead of just companionship.

• We don't actually want an aggressive/attack-type dog, we just want something that barks a little and maybe looks a bit intimidating.I love pits too--we used to volunteer at a shelter and there was one we wanted so badly.  But she got adopted (after being there for a year.  Sigh.).

• Well, in that case a Husky mix could do the job. They definitely bark some and are bigger. Honestly, they're a wonderful dog. As long as they're properly exercised and stimulated. ;)

• OMG I want to take Humble home and cuddle with him! Look at those eyes! Awwwww.

• This is too hard. All their little faces just kill me... I have to go out to dinner, but I'll look at them later. In the meanwhile, I did notice there were some Shih-tzus. Please don't discard them as an option because they're thought of as fru-fru dogs. I promise you that my Oscar is a "real dog" in every sense... Shih-tzus are: - good with other animals - not violent, at all - smallish and portable, can fly ON the plane with you... - basically non-shedding - not AT ALL yappy like poms, chihuahuas, etc. Here's pic of what Winston could look like with some love and attention:
• At least she was adopted and not put down!  We adopted a pit mix a little while ago and she is prob the greatest dog I've met.  Sheps aren't usually aggressive for no reason, but they will definitely protect you if something goes down.  They're incredibly loyal. Good luck! New doggies are so fun :):)
