Re: Pronunciation

  • Instantaneously. Regardless of it's status as a word, it just seems surperfluous to me.  Instantly works just fine, thanks much.
  • FI and his family all say "acrosst", drives me crazy. One of my FSIL adds a "k" to words ending in "ing".  Anythingk, everythingk, etc.  And I don't know if it's just because I've noticed this, but she used words that end in "ing" A LOT.I also hate when people refer to Alzheimer's as "alltimers" or "oldtimers" disease.
  • FI is from Boston.  My family is from Kentucky.  We have LOTS of interesting conversations.  Mom says warsh.  My grandmother says "Orbun" instead of "Auburn".  I hate "ax" instead of "ask", and I despise all the text speak that my team attempts to use as real conversation, regardless of how it's pronounced.  Where I went to college, the local accent has really long "I" sounds.  So, light sounds like "laaght" and pie = "paaah".  I hate that too.

Dresses may be easier to take in than let out, but guest lists are not. -- kate51485
  • I giggle every time a patient tells me they have problems with their "prostrate"DH also says EYE-talian for reasons I don't understand. He also calls our friends GMC SUV an "aRcadia"And my inlaws don't call tortillas tortillas. They call them "burrito shells." It makes me insane. Sometimes FIL will call them "tortilla shells" when I'm around to make me feel better, but still. It says TORTILLA on the package, hence, that's what they are.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • My mom will add the word "the" to things. Sometimes she tells me she's going to "The Shaws" or "The Stop & Shop". I think it's a New England thing though.

  • MissSarah...I was going to say the Tar-jay one. It drives me nuts. Pronouncing it that way doesn't make it a dept store people.
  • Instantaneously.Regardless of it's status as a word, it just seems surperfluous to me. Instantly works just fine, thanks much.I think instantly and instantaneously mean two different things.  The latter means two or more things happening at the same time, I believe.
  • MissSarah, totally off-topic, but do you and Tim wear your rings on your right hands?

  • Ha! No, PhotoBooth sometimes inverts the photos, I hadn't even noticed. I don't know why it inverts the photos....
  • I would invert it back, but I'm so used to the photo the way it is that it would freak me out.
  • Conversate.............NOT A WORD.  It's converse. I also don't like Milk and Pillow being pronounced with an 'e' - Melk - Pellow.
  • Instantaneously.Regardlessof it's status as a word, it just seems surperfluous to me. Instantly works just fine, thanks much.I think instantly and instantaneously mean two different things. The latter means two or more things happening at the same time, I believe. Maybe that's the issue.  My BFF uses the word all. the. time. and it drives me bonkers.  Maybe it's just because she's using in improperly and I only realized it subconsciously.
  • Probly, should of, EXPESHALLY, libarry, and many many more.

  • I think I'm desensitized to most of these, if I wasn't I could never talk to anyone on my dad's side of the family. The only ones that still make me cringe are:Italian: Eye-talian Wash: wrarsh

  • I also annoy myself when I speak at times. I can not, for the life of me, pronounce "Stewarts" correctly. This is popular gas station/convenient store that is all over the place around here. FI makes fun of me all the time for saying "bink" instead of pink.
  • Hah MissSarah! I wish I didn't think I'd lose my job for being a smartass to a customer. I also hear provolonEEE cheese a lot and it always makes me giggle. Anyone else not a fan of the various tomato/potato pronounciations?
  • I think instantly and instantaneously mean two different things. The latter means two or more things happening at the same time, I believe.Nope, simultaneously means two different things happening at the same time.  Instantaneously means something happens all of a sudden.Anyways, I like to say tar-jay, not b/c I think it makes it sound classier but b/c it made my Grandma smile to say it that way.  My mom says warsh, and I like it when she does b/c she's my mom and I can tease her about it.Pronunciations don't bug me nearly as much as misspelling of words.  Esp. when it's on purpose, like in the name of a business (i.e. Krafty People, or Kitty Kottage, or whatever).
  • Samwich=SandwichMelk=MilkCalcalator=calculatorAmbalance=AmbulanceRealitor=RealtorIt also annoys me when people call all pasta noodles or Macaroni and Cheese just Macaroni.
  • A coworker pronounced light bulbs as "light bubs." DROVE ME NUTS! She also said "tortillia" (tor-til-lee-uh) instead of tortilla (tor-tee-ya). Another girl would say "LOL" instead of actually laughing. Seriously?!FI says "genDre" instead of genre. He knows there's no d, but it's an automatic thing w/ him.I hate "disorientated." Aren't you disoriented?

  • I was watching TV last night with FI...we were watching Dog the Bounty Hunter (don't judge) and it was an episode from Valentine's Day. Dog and Beth both kept calling it "Valentime's Day"....It's Valentine's Day, Dog!
  • I hate when people call my city Cal-gary. It's pronounced Cal-gry. OREGONIts Ore-GUN, not Ore-GONE
