What is your job?

Do you like it?  What are your goals?I'm a development assistant at a conservative (leaning libertarian) group in Washington, DC.  I do a lot of grunt work but I really like my job.  I think there is a lot of opportunity for growth and it's the field I would like to stay in (fundraising and political).  My co-workers are also amazing.  For the future I would just like to keep moving on up.  I'm worried about having a family here though so maybe in a few years after I've gotten some experience or whenever I'm ready to have kids I'll relocate to a different place.

Re: What is your job?

  • I work in the accounting department of a small business.  I'm basically the office biitch. It's a job, so I don't typically complain, but no I'm not fond of it.I want to open my own business, but that's not going to be an option until our economy recovers a bit.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I'm an administrative assistant while I finish my degree.  Eventually I'd like to get my teaching certificate so I can teach, so this is just a means to an end.  Thank goodness for that because I really don't like my job.
  • When you say you are worried about having kids "there" do you mean DC or while you are with that company? I'm also in DC so I'm just curious. I work in the sales office of a local branch of a large Japanese electronics company. I don't actually participate in sales, I just baby sit the sales reps. It's not an ideal job, but it's about 95% less stressful than my last position (in the legal industry) so I don't mind it.  All of my real-life goals involve my writing. Basically I'm a novelist in a cube monkey costume. Hey, it pays the bills.
  • Glad to hear y'all are "leaning Libertarian." Seems to me that Libertarianism is the only thing that makes sense, these days.Anyway, I'm a paralegal for a mineral rights lawyer.  It's definitely interesting work and has made me consider law school in a way I never had before.

  • I work in sales developing corporate accounts for a computer company.  I like my job but hate my commute (60 miles one way)I'm trying to finish my degree at night but had to take a year off, it's getting hard to focus on school & a career.  FI has his own business and I'd really like to help him grow it some day and make it our own.

  • I'm a CPA.  I work for a large, publicly traded utility doing management reporting, SEC and Regulatory reporting, and accounting for income taxes.  I've been here 12 years, and I love it.

  • Right now I'm in grad school.
  • I'm an attorney, but I just got a job in law school admissions.  I don't know if I'll like it yet because I don't start until next Monday, but we'll see.  I'm excited and nervous.

  • My job is in search engine marketing, I like it well enough. I have too many goals to list.

  • I'm an HR Generalist. I do corporate recruiting, training, harrassment investigation, performance improvement, disciplinary actions, coaching and development, policy development and implementation and a ton of advising.
  • I am Director of Accounting at a small private university. It is stressful, but I love working in the non-profit sector, even if it doesn't pay as much as corporate work. I am a CPA and hope to be a Certified Fraud Examiner by the end of the year (If I can ever stop knotting long enough to study). My big life goal is to be a consultant to non-profit service organizations. I envision being an incubator, connecting the programmatic ideas and ideals with the correct infrastructure and administration to be able to acheive them. Its a lofty goal, but I definintely see a need and I'm going for it, just not right at this moment because I need more experience and education in order to gain the industry respect.

  • Im the office admin at the office/warehouse of a company that owns a few stores and restaurants in the area, I love it!! Im part personal assistant to the owners, part HR and part just plain office admin. I dont have any concrete goals for here other than to stick around as long as possible - the bosses are incredible people and I am extremely happy here.
  • I'm accounts payable and a development assistant for a nonprofit environmental group. There is not enough for me to do during the day so I'm very bored.  A new development director is starting soon though, so hopefully I'll get more responsibility and actually enjoy getting up each morning.

  • I work for a city government, as a "data technician".  I deal with billing issues/customer service.  I hate it with a passion, and cry at least twice a week. My goal is to be a pastry chef when I can afford to quit my job and go to culinary arts school.

  • Mandapanda- I mean in DC in general.  No offense to the people here but I cannot stand the family life here.  Spoiled rotten children you wouldn't know an outdoor activity if a baseball hit them in the head, people who wait until their 40s to have families.  It's just not what I'm used to and I don't want my kids to be a product of this area.  Granted, I am from the mid west and I know a lot people from here think mid westerners are too friendly and happy...I prefer that stereotype any day.  I am hoping to eventually relocate to Chicago (the BEST city in the country)

  • I'm an attorney.  I work at a small labor & employment firm.  I love my job.  The only thing I hate about it is that it is in the suburbs, so after I get enough experience here, we'll move back to DC.  We plan on raising kids in DC.  I'm not sure why that would be worrisome.
  • I'm a staff accountant for a large internet based auto parts business.  I like my job a lot and it has a lot of potential, plus they are helping my finish up my degree so I can't complain at all.I'd either like to stay here or do some book keeping for some smaller businesses in the area.  I'd like to find a way, if possible, to use my career and work from home (at least more often than not) when H and I decide to have children.  I really enjoy accounting and I'd like to keep doing it.

  • Interesting. I've lived all over this country and actually think DC is one of the most polite cities I've been in. Spoiled/indoor kids are sadly everywhere. I hope if we have kids (which after the niece and nephew visited this past weekend we probably won't) that we can raise them in the Pacific NW, but that's just because we'd have more support up there.
  • I want to have the energy to enjoy my kids.  My cousin waited that long and she is exhausted.  I don't want to be that way.  Excuse me for wanting to have kids earlier and see my grandchildren.  Oh, the horror!

  • Mandapanda- wow I'm jealous of your experience.  This is hands down my least favorite city.  It's getting better but the snobbery, fakeness, and rudeness just annoys me.
