Working out is causing me to break out

I feel like I am a teenager again!  Ever since I really started working out 3-4 days a week, my chest and face have totally broken out.  Does anyone have any suggestion of what kind of soap that can help me with this??  I figure I would start here, since everyone here may have experienced this as well.

Re: Working out is causing me to break out

  • How often are you washing your face/etc right now?
  • Face....in the morning and at night.  I am using the Mary Kay face stuff.  Rest of me...I take a shower in the morning, and after I work out.

  • My chin breaks out a lot - I wash with clearsil ultra something or other scrub for acne in the morning, wash with just regular dove soap after I get home from work, scrub in the shower after work out, scrub again at night before bed. If I slack off with that, thats when I usually break out. I have rather oily skin though so its a problem.
  • For my chest I've been using Neutrogena Skin Clear body scrub...it has salicylic acid so it helps combat breakouts on my chest.  Definitely make sure you shower right after your workout, because leaving that sweat there will just exacerbate any problems.  Also, make sure you wash any makeup off your face before working out, so it doesn't keep the sweat from truly escaping your pores while you sweat.  Try using any skin-clearing soap specially designed for the face - Neutrogena also makes one that works pretty well, and is designed for sensitive skin (so it won't dry you out too much, despite the salicylic acid).

  • I have super oily skin, so the stuff I use on my face can be pretty harsh, but what I use is:  St. Ive's apricot scrub (or target generic) for black heads, Neutrogena Rapid Clear (salicylic acid), Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Scrub Body Gel (Salicylic acid), Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask (benzoyl Peroxide).  I usually use at least two of these every time I wash my face because each of the "active ingredients" works differently for me.
  • Are you exfoliating at all?  I wash my face in the morningwith Aveeno foam soap for sensitive skin and then at nightI use face washing pads that have exfoliation on one side anda gentle wash on the other.  I exfoliate my bad areas at nightand it seems to really help.  All face products I use are Aveeno and I really really like them.  They have various linesfor different skins types.Like pp said, when I don't follow my routine is when I startto break out.
  • No, I am not exfoliating at all.  I normally have normal skin, with a few oily spots (around my nose, and my chin).  So I am guessing that I am going to need to find a body scrub and face wash/scrub with salicylic acid.  Thanks ladies.  I will try a few different kinds and find what works best for me.  I appreciate it.

  • You probably want to start with a sensitive exfoliate first.  This way you are not over scrubbing your face when its notused to the exfoliation.
  • I broke out heaps when I started working out, and I always had awesome skin as a teenager, so I thought I was being ripped off! I was working out with make up on (dumb) so I stopped doing that and its all but gone. Hope that helps.
  • I agree with the other ladies. Neutrogena is really awesome and is kind to the skin. I am allergic to Benzoyle Peroxcide (sp?) so I have use something else like Neutrogena. I also got a perscription for Retin A which has helped so much on my face and back. I also had to cut a lot of sugar out of my diet to help out.
  • I have very sensitive skin, and have had face/body acne issues for years.  After all that, I am a die hard, to the core Neutrogena girl.  Here's my routine:MORNING SHOWER:Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash (I also alternate with Body Clear Body Scrub).  **If you have oily skin, I would recommend the grapefruit body wash, which tends to dry skin out more.Neutrogena Anti-Stress Exfoliating Facial ScrubNeutrogena toner (either Deep Clean Invigorating Oil Free, or Anti-Stress)Neutrogena 3-in-1 spot treatment (only on problem areas)Garnier Nutrisse moisturizer (I found Neutrogena did not moisturize enough, but aveeno was too heavy; I've also tried Dove, but Garnier was the first one I tried that never made my skin break out, plus it has SPF 28)EVENING Neutrogena Exfoliating scrub (either deep clean relaxing, or grapefruit)Baby Lotion for moisturizer (sensitive skin w/ aloe variety)AFTER WORKOUTNeutrogena body washNeutrogena deep clean face wash (non-exfoliating)I exfoliate 2x a day, which  has been amazing.   I used to use ProActive, which really did work well.  When I needed to pinch pennies, I found the Neutrogena anti-stress line, which I would say has worked as well, if not better, than Proactive.Don't sit around in your sweaty workout clothes, which can clog your pores.  Drink LOTS of water.
