Another Drinking and Pregnancy Poll

Re: Another Drinking and Pregnancy Poll

  • I see a lot of kids with FAS in clinic, and IMO, it is absolutely not worth the risk. And, FASD is a spectrum disorder...just because a child doesn't "look" like they have FAS doesn't mean there were no ill effects.
  • lpstl--to clarify, there was an isolated incident of a woman having a few drinks one night (like 3) when she didn't know she was pregnant (was several weeks along) and had a child with FAS. I didn't mean that studies show that one drink causes it. I know it's probably overly-cautious to say that you can never ever have even one drink or the child is f'd, but I still say why chance it. It's only booze. I can live without it. And yes, kids can sometimes be affected without showing physical signs of FAS.

  • Ok, here are a few more that I can't redistribute without violating my corporate license, but you might be able to access them via your university library.EUROMAC. A European concerted action: maternal alcohol consumption and its relation to the outcome of pregnancy and child development at 18 months. Published in 1992 in the International Journal of Epidemiology.Summary: A study of pregnancies in eight European countries found that consuming no more than one drink per day did not appear to have any effect on fetal growth. A follow-up of children at 18 months of age found that those from women who drank during pregnancy, even two drinks per day, scored higher in several areas of development.Moderate alcohol consumption during pregnancy and the incidence of fetal malformations: a meta-analysis. Published in Neurotoxicol Teralol in 1998.Summary: An analysis of seven major medical research studies involving over 130,000 pregnancies suggests that consuming two to 14 drinks per week does not increase the risk of giving birth to a child with either malformations or fetal alcohol syndrome.

  • 14 drinks per week - holy crap. FWIW - I've heard that an occasional glass of wine is fine - and some people are now saying that it's beneficial. I'm in the boat of "no one really knows." Alcoholism runs heavy in DH's family, and I'm not a big drinker, so it's no big deal for me to go without. For me, it's better safe than sorry.
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • rho, I'd still be interested in reading any clinical references about that case. Scientifically speaking, I'm not sure how 3 drinks that early in pregnancy could cause FAS. I've read studies which examined 400,000 women who drank infrequently to moderately during pregnancy and there was not one instance of FAS. To me it sounds like she gave birth to a FAS baby, freaked, and said she only had 3 drinks before she knew she was pregnant to save face. Based upon the numerous clinical studies I've read, and my dr's advice, I believe a glass of red wine every once in a while is beneficial as opposed to risky. That's fine if people don't agree, but I hope they are basing their opinions on evidence based clinical studies .. and if they are, I'd like to see them.

  • If I get pregnant I can see myself having a glass of wine once or twice. (not daily or even weekly)I generally do not jump on the 'do not drink/eat  "x" during a pregnacy bandwagon.  In some cases we are scary women into eatting.  As we know statistics can be interpreted many different ways.  So I will do some research make an informed dicision then.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • lynda! this sentence hurts me!In some cases we are scary women into eatting.
  • oops.. That is what you get after flying all damm day.  We just got home an hour ago.  I really should have just gone to bed.

  • I have 2 kids, and might have had a small drink on a couple of occasion during both pregnancy. Like half a beer or wine cooler. Both children were born healthy and had a perfectly normal development. There were times when they were teenagers when I thought they might be retarded, but made it through school without having to ride the short bus.
  • No, I wouldn't.  I subscribe to the "not a drop of alcohol" theory during pregnancy.  I have worked with children with FAS and it is definitely not worth the risk.  It's unknown the exact level of alcohol use that will cause FAS.  I couldn't imagine living with myself if my actions caused something like FAS in my child.
