Re: Poll:Bridesmaid Dresses

• Can we see the dress in question, please?
• zero, unless they got alterations.Zero. unless I got alterations.
• Lindsay, I'm definitely planning on looking elsewhere. It's honestly more of a hypothetical question than anything else...we're still a year out from ordering anything, I'm sure I'll find something else I like by then :)
• Here is the dress in question: http://tinyurl.com/yz4sqxn [Open in new window]
• I'm confused as to why one would like to wear their dress like this but in any case, I think it's something you need to talk to your BM's about. I wouldn't re-wear it (or at least, would be highly unlikely to- I might re-wear to work, but not out socially) as it's not my type of dress, but perhaps your BM's will feel differently.
• I paid for two of my bridesmaids' dresses. One bridesmaid and her husband are pretty much broke and struggling, and I could never bring myself to either ask her to pay for the dress or pass her up as a bridesmaid. The other bridesmaid went through an arduous process of switiching her medicine residency schedule, took vacation days and bought a plane ticket to come in for the wedding. Although she could afford it, she had already given so much for my wedding, it was the least I could do.My third bridesmaid is my 16-y/o future sister-in-law, and her jillionaire CFO father can buy her dress and it won't even be a blip on his monthly budget.Their alterations are included in the price of the dress. They're floor-length dresses, so I don't plan to make them buy certain shoes. I also don't really care if they do their own hair and makeup.I was a bridesmaid three times in a year while I was a grad student living off $1,000 a month, and I was so tired of shelling out money for other people.... showers, dresses, bachelorette parties, alterations, shoes, gifts, being expected to pay for my hair and makeup... it made me so miserable and was such a huge financial burden to me at the time that I swore I would never do that to my friends.I don't think it should be done any other way. If you've never been a bridesmaid, you have NO idea how much it adds up!
• Bahaha, Sun..yeah I wondered that too...I think the idea is to wear it w/ a tank underneath...at least I hope? And you're probably right, I should just leave it up to them.
• What kind of body types do your girls have?  A stretch jersey material like that is going to sit VERY close to the body and show off every little roll and pudge.  Someone in phenomenal shape (or even decent shape with some spanx) might love it.  Someone plus sized may feel self conscious about how form showing it is and not like it at all.   The first one might not mind paying that much (I never would, fwiw) but the second one will probably hate you for making her part with 250 bucks for something that doesn't flatter her.

• Jill, That same dress is sold at Victoria's Secret for $70. I should also add, if any of your girls are slightly on the heavier side or have anything larger than a B cup, it might not be very flattering. Here's the dresses from Victoria's Secret
• if it wasn't clear enough, keep in mind that they're not just paying for the dress. They're also going to be spending money on your wedding in the form of shoes, lingerie, alterations, jewelry, hair and makeup, throwing  showers and bachelorette parties, buying gifts for bachelorette party + shower + wedding, and possibly plane tickets and hotel.I probably spent $500 each on the three weddings I was in.... and I'm cheap and did my own alterations + hair.
• East is right. Any girl that has just a bit of extra weight is not going to be flattered in this dress. And $246 is INSANE for a jersey dress. I would never, ever pay that.
• $140.I've never been a bridesmaid.

• It was going to be $120 but ultimately I bought their dresses for them.
• My girls paid about 170 for theirs. The most I have paid is the one I am wearing in a wedding new July. It will end up being a little over 300.In know both these prices seems high but to be honest, in my circle, we are willing to pay in this range. I LOVE those dresses. My MoH sister did them and they came out gorgeous. Her sister then wore it to my wedding a month later. Here are some pics:
• Can you not wear a bra with them?  It looks like none of those girls have a bra on.  Do not make your girls buy anything they can't wear a bra with.  I beg of you, as a C cup.  That wouldn't even be a possibility for me.  I would drop out of your wedding before I would be willing to do that.   Honestly, I think they cost too much and there are too many drawbacks.  I would go with something else.

• Yeah East the had to get cups sewn in so no full out bra at all.I think dropping out of a wedding over a dress is pretty rash, but yes, you are absolutely right that you have to know the wedding party you are dealing with when you buy any bm dress. Not every one is stick thin with no boobs like these girls happened to be. Still, if you have the right crowd they look great.
• I have never been a BM. I wish Ann Taylor and J Crew would carry larger sizes as I love their dresses and they often go on sale.
• east, I was thinking the same thing. I really don't find those dresses flattering at all.
• My bridesmaids paid $99, so with tax it was $110. After UPS lost one of my dresses, my BM went to David's and bought a similar replacement off the rack for $130.I remember paying $140 for my last bridesmaid's dress, plus about $50 in alterations.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
• Ours are $210.  Most I've ever paid, including alterations, was $250.  It was absolutely un-rewearable, but it's my best friend and I didn't mind.I'm not sure if mine are re-wearable.  I'd wear it to a cocktail party or another wedding since it's short, but I don't know if my BMs have the same style I do.  I think that a jersey dress like that would be really unflattering on anyone who isn't a stick.

• My BMs spent $0 on their dresses. I had them made and sent to them. The most I've ever spent on a BM's dress was for my girls: $300 each.
• Brie, I think it's also unflattering on those who are sticks, because it provides no shape.
• There's too much excess fabric involved I think.  Thats the main problem with it, other than lack of bra.  And the super-clinging.  It's needless.  It's going to swallow up a tiny girl and amplify a big one.

• Oh, and I just read all the posts and saw the dress in question... There's no way I'd pay $250 for a jersey dress. Sorry, but it would have to be in a nicer fabric like silk. I just don't see the value in that material :(
• I have spent up to 350 on a dress. Most dresses are in the 200-250 range though I would say.
• I forgot to say that I have not picked out my bridesmaid dresses yet. I am trying not to spend more than 200 on them but sometimes the right dress can be expensive. I would rather have the girls happy in a gorgeous dress than something that looks off the rack at a bridal shop. I love those jersey dresses though and I am a size 6 so you don't have to be a size 00. I own two and the look a lot different in real life. The have a great flair when you are moving and dancing.
• I think my bridesmaids spent $265 on their dresses.  $350 + alterations was the most I've spent.

• (oh, and I know that 3 out of 5 of them have worn them again -- not sure about the other two)
