Unsolicited Advice...

Re: Unsolicited Advice...

  • What Tide said.Seriously, I have never wanted to punch so many people before in my life. Asking when someone conceived is not remotely ok, do I ask you when you have sex? Assuming it was unplanned is a douche move too, and yes, asking is just as bad.I don't care if you think I'm crazy for hiring a doula and trying to go sans drugs. You're the same person who told me I shouldn't take Tylenol, please tell me why you're all the sudden totally fine with an epidural. To the person who told me I really shouldn't drink coffee, you aren't my OB so please STFU. One cup a day is fine, if you knew what you were talking about you'd know that.

  • Sn, apparently it is because being responsible and making sure you protect the baby from the pets and the pets from the baby is just entirely too much work to expect.Ah, makes perfect sense when you put it that way! ;)

  • One of my BMs adopted a cat from a shelter that some people had basically just thrown out of the house when they had a baby. The neighbors brought her to the shelter. She was the sweetest thing! I always had pets as kids. I don't get why people think it's an either/or proposition. And I adopted my cat from a woman who had a preemie baby who was allergic. She had two cats she had to give away and it broke her heart. But I love him so much!

  • lpstl, I know I'm going to get it, too someday.  People are dumb.  I wanted to go to a seafood restaurant for my birthday one year, and one of Wes's friends made us change the restaurant because his wife was pregnant.  I said, "wow, I had no idea Holly was such an adventurous eater and liked shark and yellowfin tuna so much."
  • I am so glad I'm not the only one getting the "baby replaces pet" speech.  It's ridiculous and selfish and I won't be neglecting my dog just because I popped out a kid.
  • Regarding cats - my Grandmother-in-law honestly believed that crap about cats 'sucking the breath' out of the baby.  She was terrified that our cat would kill our dauthter and was surprised we kept him.  Um . . . no.  Cats do not kill children.  They all learned to live together famously.  And we even added dogs to the mix.

  • I'm just getting mostly the 'oooh are you excited?' How's planning?' It's done. I get married in 3 weeks, there's nothing left to plan.I get a lot of 'are you going to have kids right away or wait?' Why are those the only two options? Maybe we won't have any. If I do, I'm perfectly happy to wait until I'm 35 or close to it to have A kid (yes just one). And when I tell them I want only one, I get 'oh you need to have another or they'll be spoiled. Kids don't spoil themselves last I checked, so having one or a dozen shouldn't make a difference unless I am bad parent and spoil them. I've met perfectly well adjusted singletons and many spoiled families of 4, so...

  • It makes me so sad for those pets.  It made me want to put my cat back in my siggy.

And we even added dogs to the mix.My MIL is freaked out about this.  To be honest, I was *slightly* concerned about the cats snuggling with the baby when it's REALLY young when she brought it up.  Which is why I will change my routine, and take precautions.  I believe DH's exact words to her were, "Don't worry mom - they make this mesh stuff that we can put over the baby's cage so the cats don't get in."And then she looked at him like he had 2 heads.  Sorry - we're animal people.  Haven't transitioned to baby terminology yet.  We also still sometimes refer to the doctor as the vet.

  • Re: the pets/babies thing -- isn't it good for little kids to be exposed to a little bit of "stuff" like dust and dander here and there, anyway?  I think I remember reading somewhere that if they're never exposed to any allergens and grow up in a total germ free environment that later on in life, they are unable to fend off even the smallest of irritants or viruses.
  • people who give up their pets because they spawned are evil.  besides, the pet was there first. seniority yo.
  • Kate - it's true, although I think it applies more to dogs than to cats.  Either way, I have a pretty hardy immune system and I fully believe it's because we grew up in a barn and rolled around in the dirt.

  • On note with the animal thing...My FSIL and her husband are having a baby and right away talked to Andy and I about taking their dog in case the dog doesn't get along with the baby.  Um, sure.  I love your dog.  But still, give him a chance!  Most domesticated animals do very well with babies.  Think about it, animals give birth too.  They are smarter than we think.  They understand that a baby is a small human that the master human takes very good care of.  They get it.

  • "Don't worry mom - they make this mesh stuff that we can put over the baby's cage so the cats don't get in."Ha! I have to remember that one. We haven't gotten too much trouble from people about the animals. I'm sure now that I've said that all the crazies will come around and tell us to give up the turtle because he could claw the baby to death.Heels, that's ridiculous. When I was about 2 months pregnant I posted on FB that I was taking pete out for sushi for his bday. My sister frantically blew up my phone to tell me I can't eat sushi. Yes I can genius, you can get cooked sushi.

  • ShShne,Thanks! I love your kitteh's owl eyes. If we could get more cats I would totally be up for that, but our apartment is small, and one is enough for now.
  • Yep I have seen that study that says to expose you kids to animals when they are a baby which decrease the chances for them to have allergies. Also making sure you do not go crazy on the anti-biotics so that way the baby builds a healthy immune system and you do not contribute with building super bacteria that is resistant to anti-bacterial medicine. I can go on a whole rant about how our society is creating super bacteria with everyone useing anti-bacterial products everywhere. It drives me crazy.
  • "Oh, how domestic! You'll make such a great wife!" Ugh, I get that one all the time. I love cooking, I sew, I knit, I garden. I also work a full-time, demanding job so if I don't get around to the cooking and the cleaning right away I don't feel bad. S totally understands this and splits chores 50/50, loves working in the garden, etc. But people still say stuff like I'd "be the perfect wife!" instead of that we are perfect together. Blech.Because we've been together so long we always get asked "Why aren't you married yet?". Uhm, because we haven't gotten around to it. Sorry, didn't realize there was a deadline on this sort of thing.

  • I can not tell you how many animals we have come through our Humane Society from owners dropping them because they have a new baby.  It makes me insane.  The number is jaw dropping.  And these aren't mean little animals, these are sweet, kind kitties and respectful little lap dogs.   It makes me want to shoot the owners.  No, thats not painful enough.  It makes me want to jab dulled forks into their eyes and jiggle them around.  Maybe think about your future child bearing plans BEFORE getting a pet that typically lives 12-20 years you irresponsible *ssholes.

"Whatever East. You're just mad I RSVP'd "lame" to your pre-wedding sleepover."
  • A fb friend posted that they're giving their dog away. The wife is due in a few weeks.  I hope the two aren't tied together, but if they are, I WILL judge. >:(
